As I drive for a living I spend a lot of time listening to podcasts on my way to and from the area I work in. Dan makes me laugh so often and I'm honestly gutted when he isnt on either of their podcasts. I think Jeff summed it up really well, every time you talk to Dan it's like meeting him for the first time. Stopped listening when the OG crew left, but always had a love/hate thing with Dan. He made me laugh a couple times, but I couldn't get over all the general knowledge stuff he doesn't know. At times it felt like he spend 27 years glued to the sofa watching only wrestling. When someone mentions Dan all I can think of is the Steak conversation.

He once tried cooking egg shells because he thought you get egg white by melting them. He called his mom when he couldn't get them to melt.

I know it's hard to justify now with costs or location of staff but a big thing that's missing these days is having everyone together in one room.

He once tried cooking egg shells because he thought you get egg white by melting them. He called his mom when he couldn't get them to melt. Someone on a celebrity Come Dine With Me once tried to make pea soup by frying them until they dissolved or something but it was obviously just reducing the peas into a burnt fritter thing, then there was a hard cut to black and he was stirring an actual pan of soup in the next shot. I think the crew had to step in and stop him, if it was a comedian maybe it might’ve been a sketch but it was a Big Brother contestant who appeared to just be really thick.

I listen to a lot of weekly podcasts while I’m commuting, doing chores or walking the dog. But I could never keep up with their other output, which makes subscribing seem a bit pointless. I’ve previously done it purely out of appreciation for the weekly podcast on GiantBomb, but I also let that lapse after the split.
There’s probably a Patreon tier for “I just like the one thing I already get, and don’t need any extras” that I should be subscribed to for Gerstmann, Nextlander, Minn Max and Fire Escape- I like all those. And Jess’s Patreon has received a healthy boost since yesterday, so that’s good for whatever she wants to do next.
Wonder what Jason will do though. I’d like to support him just because it sounds like he needs the help, but I can also see him going away from games media due to this (like Ben Pack did)

Oh and Dan is at his best on Fire Escape - him and Mike riffing off each other can be just as good as the classic Beastcast moments.

I was another one that found Dan very hit and miss. I appreciated his enthusiasm for new content and at times he could be very funny but then others his ignorance on a lot of things really rubbed me the wrong way.

What's up with Jason then? I noticed he seemed to, let's say, beef up during lockdown.

Grubb on this mornings Games Mess show, said what's the point in the Premium subscription if its not going to keep staff in a job and said expect a lot less content again as Jan won't be able to do it all. Said the site is still in a transition phase and it's now even harder for them.
Jeff liked this
Would be cool to see him, Jason and Ben finish it off.

Grubb is excellent, they really wouldn't want to be losing him. He actually seems to have good contacts in terms of getting news as well.

You can tell how upset/pissed off he is about it.

Can I not read that tweet because I'm too old, or is it because it genuinely doesn't make any sense? Or both?

I really wish I could support a whole bunch of these people, but there are now so many its impossible to justify that many subscriptions. I did used to support Giant Bomb, but stopped when Vinnie, Brad and Alex left. Not because of any ill will, but because I had already gravitated to their stuff on the site, and while an move to something younger might make sense, it wasn't going to be for me (I assume they all speak like that tweet, just a series of unrelated word sounds interspersed with memes).
Didn't mind Dan, but he veered a little too much towards the shouty stage performer side of things for me. Again, not his fault, just not what I'm looking for.
I should probably at least support Nextlander and Watch Out For Fireballs, since I listen to their stuff so much.

Listening to Gerstmann talk about lay offs.
Mentioned that he was lied to when being bought by CBS. Was ready to leave due to how he was being treated by someone above who moved the goal posts in regards to funding mid meeting when he said make these numbers and we will give you more money which Jeff pointed out the site was already doing only for the guy to stumble and go no reach these numbers.
He and Ryan had been offered new contracts which Ryan was going to sign but Jeff wasn't. He only did because Ryan talked him into it. Ryan died just before he saw any extra money come from the new contract.
Saddest part is saying that looking back now GB would have likely been closed within 8-9 months if not for Ryan Davis death. The outpouring of love made CBS want to cash in on it and suddenly started investing. Ryan's death was also what made Jeff realise he needed to stop fucking about and find out what he needed to do with himself. He was turning down dates to review games and finally said the fuck am I doing.
Ryan's death was the only reason Dan and Jason got signed.
Pretty sad seeing him slowly breaking while talking about it all.

I still miss Ryan after all these years. He was an amazing host and always knew how to get the best out of Jeff. Similar to Vinny he was a good counterpoint to Jeff's negativity which is why I think people noticed it a lot more in the later years.
No celebrity death ever affected me like Ryan Davis'.

Funnily enough it was the Kinect videos with Jeff and Ryan that really got me into Giantbomb.

I stopped listening a bout 5 months after Jeff left / got fired. The energy and synergy from the old roundtables felt forced. That mega stream they did very much felt like a swan song as well.
I don't see them surviving long after this. I only started listening just after Ryan died but it's a real sad end to something that was part of my weekly routine for years.

I really wish Jeff would put some effort into his setup. I still dip into his content from time to time and seeing him sitting in a messy room with plain white walls time after time can't be helping him gain new viewers.

Jess was on the NoClip podcast and mentioned a few more details about the layoffs. How she was put into a Zoom call and when she noticed Jason and Justin on the same call she was like “oh I must be safe then, because they couldn’t possibly be getting rid of them”. Can’t decide if that’s funny or tragic (it’s both). Also interesting to hear Danny taliking about the advice he got from the GiantBomb crew when he went independent- Vinny being the voice of reason and concern, Gerstmann being “Go for it! What’s the worst that can happen?” noclippodcast.libsyn.com/

Really shitty especially people still being dismissed via a zoom call.

Really shitty especially people still being dismissed via a zoom call. Whilst that wouldn't be the situation in an ideal world. Jess and Jason were in completely different parts of the country than the core office. No real other option.

Yeah, not sure if taking a flight to the head office just to get laid off is better.
They just need to get some of these people on the same couch next E3. They all seem to have left on good terms, but if you read between the lines it feels like they are one good talk away from appearing on each other’s streams. Mainly thinking about Jeff G. and the Nextlander crew here.

Not having a load on call then splitting them up to fire them in a group chat.

I don't see him being on anything with them any time soon.

My theory based on absolutely nothing is that Jeff G. made a management decision that was disadvantageous for everybody else but him, seeing how he has a family to take care of now.
