It feels like they've added more characters in the last 5 years than all the others put together, and few have been at all interesting.
This'll be the first one I completely ignore, at least until it's all done and if it gets good reviews at that point.

I think a lot of the tv series would’ve been better served by being one shots like standalone one hour specials or 90 minute tv movies. That werewolf one and GOTG Xmas Special were top tier D+ streaming MCU because they stuck to their plots and didn’t need extra padding.
But then that doesn’t keep us logged into the app for 8-12 hours and risks our eyes drifting to other platforms.

I read a review that called this the gayest MCU title so far.
How gay are we talking?

Well, its about a woman, so for a lot of noisy internet fanboys that’s probably gay beyond the point of being able to watch

It needs more muscular men whose six packs have six packs to reduce the gayness.

I read a review that called this the gayest MCU title so far. How gay are we talking? There's some kind of chemistry/history between Agatha and Aubrey Plaza's character, which really could be anything, and Joe Locke's character has an off-screen boyfriend. That's it unless you think it has some kind of gay vibe or whatever. The queer quotient of the MCU is pretty poor, so this show already ranks fairly high, but I'd say Eternals is gayer, it's just no one remembers it.

There is also the not so hidden subtext that witches are all, basically, lesbians.

As far as connectivity goes, she lost her powers not much else needs to be explained. There are a few references, but they aren't crucial to the plot.

I mean, there is the thorny issue of why we should give the slightest fuck about this person which I think is probably quite crucial.

They only greenlit the show based on the positive response to her in WandaVision.
The problem is, of course, that nowadays they've got SO. MUCH. STUFF. that they can't pivot quickly anymore. Ideally, this would have come out, what, 12-18 months after WandaVision? Except they already had about three different shows filmed and lined up to be broadcast, plus three more planned and announced that they needed to see to. So by the time it's out I'd wager only the big fans remember enough to care.
(I don't know how well known this is, but after Winter Soldier, the Russos & Marcus/McFeeley were developing a third Cap film that only focused on the Russian lab/super soldier/Zemo side of the plot, with no plans to include Iron Man or anything; after realising that they'd be sharing a summer with Batman v Superman, Feige asked if they could turn it into a Civil War movie, because he thought that would be a bigger hook, expecting them to be somewhat overshadowed by the DC film. The fact that all of this happened, was developed, written, released, etc, within two years is quite astonishing, and not something I think Marvel is flexible to do nowadays)
Back to Agatha: it has got really good reviews, and it is, in fact, very good (so far), so hopefully they'll have another minor hit on their hands.

Personally I'm still not convinced it's that important to know the full story so far.
If it's written well and played well there can be enough inherit likeability to care about the character without needing the full backstory, as long as the motives are clear.
Would you get more out of it if you knew the backstory? Perhaps. Not crucial though.
For example, I saw The Marvels before seeing the Ms. Marvel series. Didn't make me like Kamala less, and found her the most compelling character in that film. And I was fully aware of Monica Rambeau's backstory and found her the dullest.

My wife watched, and thoroughly enjoyed, WandaVision despite not having seen any Marvel stuff since probably the first Avengers movie.

Isn't it the same as not needing to read every single marvel comic produced ever to be able to read some / ones you like?

I'm still confused how they review a show based on only 4 episodes. I've seen many a show that absolutely shits the bed later on and changes the tone completely.

Isn't it the same as not needing to read every single marvel comic produced ever to be able to read some / ones you like? Yeah kinda. If you buy a collected paperback then you just take it for what it is. I've done that as a jumping off point for some characters that I've never been interested and then gone back to look at the earlier stuff if it really grabs me.

Growing up I often started buying a comic session mid-arc, because the cover looked cool, but rarely felt totally lost.
I was into Batman, the films and cartoon, and decided to start buying the Batman comics. This was during the Knightquest arc, where Wayne was recovering from a broken back and the mantle had been taken up by the mildly psychotic Jean-Paul Valley (Azrael).
I had no idea about the Knightfall arc that lead up to this edgy take on Batman. It actually made it seem cooler than it was, piecing the prior events together from what I could infer. Pre-internet too so couldn't just Google it.
If a character is cool enough, or witty enough, or just compelling in general, or there's a mystery, that's enough for me to buy into them and there ongoing story. And like Jambo says if it grabbed me enough I'd start digging through the back issues

It's up to the drama to make us care.

Back in the day, I rarely saw any TV show from the first episode and you couldn't do catch-up! and worse they weren't always shown in the right order...

There has been a recent over dependence on any existing relationship to the story or characters, and not enough on making the stories good and engaging.

It looks ok, but it also looks like a bunch of recycled scenes and ideas from other movies. Plus too much comedy and too many characters. I'm worried it's gonna go all Suicide Squad.

I mean, I think Thunderbolts* looks really good and really fun, but then I like most of those characters and I wanna see more of them (yes, even Ghost).
But I do worry most other people might shrug a little bit.
On the other hand, they're hanging the trailer off Florence Pugh pretty heavily, which is probably a good idea. If it's exciting enough for people to see "Florence Pugh does an action movie" then I guess they're onto a winner.

It’s not that redundant. We sat down to watch something as a family and 2/3rds of the family decided they couldn’t be fucked with it because they hadn’t kept up with everything. I know that’s kind of the point of it now but what I’m saying is that it’s just going to lead to more and more people dropping out, especially if it relies on you having seen shite like secret invasion or The Falcon and Winter Soldier. This is my problem. When it popped up, I thought my youngest would love it, based on vibes alone. But she's not watched many MCU films, let alone the TV shows. Disappointing when the boy told us.

I've liked pretty much everything she has done (except Don't Worry Darling, which she was still the best thing about). The asterisk still worries me though.

I like that Thunderbolts appears to have actual people on real physical sets after years of the MCU becoming essentially an animated series.
Also as always - F&WS is greatly underrated, even if the principle villain is kind of weak.

I'm glad Thunderbolts* looks more The Suicide Squad than Suicide Squad. And yeah, putting Florence Pugh front and centre is a good move, she made Hawkeye like ten times more watchable.
