I thought latest What If was a little loopy but very enjoyable. Made me laugh a few times, so as an obviously comedic offering it hit the mark well.

See, I think his argument is bullshit. He harkens back to some imagined halcyon time when kids appreciated indie movies but that’s not true, is it. Does he really think that kids were going to see and appreciate Amadeus in 1984? Instead of Ghostbusters? When I was at school everyone was talking about Robocop and Predator, nobody gave two shits about A Room With A View. That's not the point he's making. He's specifically saying that Amadeus, Fanny & Alexander, A Room With a View, were NOT indie movies. They were mainstream blockbusters. You didn't have to go to the dingy old art house theatre to see them. I saw those films when I was whatever age I was when they came out. Fanny andAlexander was easier though since I'm swedish so maye discount that. But the point is valid, if Nolans batman and Doctor Starange are seen as pushing the limits. Then where does that leave Portrait of a lady on fire? But I agree that the films that were talked about in the schoolyard were The Predator etc. He also seems to totally ignore the fact that streaming services make discovery of film far easier than it ever was *and also makes it easier for “arthouse” films to be enjoyed*. Does he think that Parasite would have been enjoyed by so many if it had to be rented on VHS? Or Nomadland? Yes, I think that's what he's saying. He seems to say that neither of those would have been delegated to the arthouse cinema in the nearest big city, or to the cineast clubs. I also think that the streaming services, like any algorithm driven platform, will result in more streamlined bland run-off the mill films. That's my personal opinion though, based on things like this.

To be fair, there are streaming platforms that focus more on arthousey stuff. You're definitely not going to get much arthouse on your Disney Pluses and Netflixes and and whatnot, but Mubi is pretty great if you're into that sort of thing. Or Arrow for cult stuff, Shudder for horror stuff, etc etc.

You're absolutely right. The internet makes room for the niche as well as the mainstream, and as long as one is willing to put in a modicum of effort, it's very easy to find high quality recommendations rather than whet shows up in the feeds.
Which is one of the reasons I prefer old school forums over algorithmically curated feeds. It's an open floor, anyone with an opinion can post it and it'll get inserted in the conversation given the same weight as any other post.
Unless you Reddit, or read eurogamer upvote article threads etc.
Kind of leads into that little bit about MetaCritic and Rotten tomatoes. Serving up an average of scores rather than the opinion of someone you've come to know and trust. Internet is having some interesting side effects.

One thing I do like is that the LFF is showing films all over the country. As much as I enjoyed going to London and going to premieres etc. it's great to be able to just go down the road. I've booked Last Night in Soho, The French Dispatch, The Harder They Fall and The Tragedy of Macbeth at HOME in Manchester.
Anyway, back to Marvel. Going to see Shang-Chi at the IMAX next week and Venom 2 is out on 15th. It's had early reactions and it's the usual OMG!!! Everyone is going nuts about a post credit scene too.

You make it sound like a one pizzeria place.

That’s not quite right. Disney are firing out preemptive lawsuits to try and ward off any any potential attempts from creators trying to claim rights under copyright expiration laws - whether they have indicated they’ll try or not - by arguing that these creations were work-for-hire and don’t fall under areas of law that would make that expiration valid. They’ve successfully argued this in court in the past but settlements were reached before it was taken to the Supreme Court.
Disney already have previous on using their vast wealth to bend copyright law out of shape via their repeated extensions of Mickey Mouse, who should have entered the public domain I think 25 years ago, but they’ve leaned on the system multiple times to grant special extensions to them, because money.

There's a weird bunch of old Disney movies that are out of copyright in Japan, because they weren't quite fast enough in getting the copyright period extended. So you can pop to the 'dollar store' and pick up Snow White, Peter Pan, etc..

On the topic of Marvel movies destroying cinema, Stellan Skarsgard had some interesting thoughts about it which I agree with. I do agree with him that those directors and creators who would make your mid budget priced movie has transitioned to television instead.

Nice What If this week. Cool to see another episode becoming its own thing rather than a retread of a previous movie again.

Next week's should be interesting, as it's supposed to be part two from this one, that will bring all of the episodes together. Last ep as well.

I’m assuming it’ll be an alternative multiverse Avengers team up. Although I’d be happy with just seeing Jafar Dr Strange going to war with Ultron.

That it’s hinting at a literal Venom cameo in Spidey 3 is lol

My mistake, I thought I looked it up and it said ten.
In my defence I’ve been isolated in a house for months and rarely even know what day it is.

I’ve always thought Ultron was a bit shit and his Avengers movie felt like filler to get us to the main event in Civil War so its interesting seeing him being a real threat

Age of Ultron had a few good points but overall it lacked oomph. (Cinematic terminology)and I've no real desire to see waves of cgi robots go boom.

I absolutely loved this episode, even if it was all sparkle. Just felt like an all-out crazy spectacle, but one that had been built to, to some degree.
I think Age of Ultron is a decent but disappointing film, and one of the big problems is Ultron himself is so ill-defined. Having said that, Spader is fantastic in the role, and whoever is playing him here is really trying their best but just can't come close unfortunately. It's probably as good as anyone could do, but it's no J-Spads.

Really enjoyed this week's WI, actually did what this show intended and presents a cracking what if Ultron won. It does bring up the question that if he was able to do that with Thanos, why couldn't Vision?
