Gran Turismo 7. Always found the gameplay middle of the road(pun intended), then one day I just got sick of receiving the worse prize in the ticket roulette Every.Fucking.Time!
So uninstalled and traded the disc in

Forgot about Forza motorsport (for the single player content), the builders cup is so boring. The team does not even bother since 4?

Dark Souls 1 - you died... Dark Souls 2 - you died... Dark Souls 3 - never even made it out of the plastic wrap now that I think about it... Bloodborne - you died... Elden Ring - you died...
I don't know why it took me so damn long to admit to myself that soulsbornes aren't my cuppa... Annoying as I enjoyed Demon's Souls back in the day, but they just don't appeal to me now.

Trekking half way across the map to fight a boss I'd already beaten paired with one I had not is what stopped me playing Elden Ring

RDR2 is one of those experiences that I wish I could repeat brand new. Different horses, which is kinda fitting 😅

Playing the latest Like A Dragon and trying out Fighting Vipers 2. Reached the end fight and just can't get past the final boss. Just when I think I got it sorted, he did 3 moves that took over 50% of my health. Hit the options and just quit there.

I don't usually give up on games I just switch to a newer, shinier one. The only game I clearly recall saying "I'm not enjoying this" was Elden Ring. Once I'd finally got through that first big castle. I've gone back since while following some mage build guide on YT and spanking certain spots for tons of gold. That playthrough I just got distracted by something else. Don't think I even got to the castle but I was super high leveled.

I remember dropping Chaser somewhere in the middle of an annoying level. That wasn't just it though. I had got pretty tired of the constant enemy bullshit at that point, but I thought the game must have been almost over. I went and looked at a guide just in case. Then I read that I was still only halfway through.
And that was the exact moment when I decided to drop it.

I quit Layers Of Fear when I realised I was steeling myself for a jump scare constantly. I’m not even sure it had any, but the creepy vibes were too much in a way that wasn’t fun.

I played that recently, but just kinda blitzed it. Jump scares and spooky atmospheres just don’t do anything to me. Neither in film or games. I kinda need to be stressed to feel scared. Resident Evil 2 Remake was the first game in years to panic me purely because I knew if I stood still for too long I might die.
Prior to that it was probably MGS 3, because those bosses felt overwhelming to me. Until you learn how to fight them, they seem like they might be impossible to overcome. And that’s not even trying to be scary.

Mostly happens when immersion breaks, I could be looking at a sky box, a bad weather effect or hit an invisible wall or the edge of the game world. I didn't finish Witcher 3, because I hit the edge of the map and it auto turned me around with him saying something like "that's an adventure for another time". This is definitely me too!

New Super Mario Bros. Wii level 3-4. One of the ice levels. God I hate this level so much. It's infuriating. This should be a fun mess about game, but instead it's a game that makes you throw wiimotes. It's possible to spend 5 minutes repeatedly trying to get off the first screen, before dying and having to do it all again.

Not sure if it was any particular moment but Gris. I happily play slower paced games but this one felt so dull, once I reached yet more of the same but with a different palette it was time to quit... And I happily played Dear Esther so...

It gets a little easier after world 3, but there is another spike in difficulty later on.

Then I read that I was still only halfway through. And that was the exact moment when I decided to drop it. There was one small defense level about half-way through where there are constantly enemies streaming in and I think they also appear on the roof and so on. It was pretty miserable. And the next to last level is just way too many bull*hit defensive turrets that resulted in an incredible amount of trial-and-error. It was doable, but didn't exactly feel skill-based...
The only FPS' that I have played that are worse than this are Hellforces, which just seemed to get more and more unfair as it went along, and The Stalin Subway - Red Veil. But I think the latter probably just had broken difficulty.
Ad Dark Souls: I tried getting into it many years ago, but I was just having a terrible time on the first try and even though I did better when I came back to it later, I eventually realized that the game would never really change. Basically, I beat that Adamantine Demon (?) thing downstairs from the Blacksmith before getting to the Darkroot Garden. Cool new environment, but the whole dance just starts again. Figure out how things work and die a bunch, get to boss and die a bunch, kill stuff again and get to boss to figure out pattern and die a bunch more; and on and on and on. The Trial-and-Error, constant inconvenient bonfires and perhaps worst of all the constant repetition, did just eventually kill it for me. Especially since all the things I liked did progressively get damaged by it. "Git gud" is just not really why I play games.

Soulstice. I struggled through one of the most annoying bosses I’ve ever come across in any game and my reward is to get dumped into the 800th C&P incarnation of a tower where I need to clear vines to progress to the next tower where I need to clear vines to progress.
Absolutely fuck that.

Wartales, just now. Interesting game, but my pony just died (again), mere footsteps after buying him. Fuck you glue boy, uninstall. Nice vibe but doesn’t explain itself and atrocious menus on a controller.

Getting to the final boss in Tears of the Kingdom and not having the right kind of items to kill it and no way of collecting them without going back to quite an old save.

Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines, I've played the tabletop game, I know what I'm doing, I play as a Ventrue using persuasion and charm to get people to do what I need, not completely adverse to direct action when needed but the vampiric aristocracy try not getting their hands too dirty, get to near the end of the game and you're in the combat hell that is the sewers and there's absolutely no way I can get through it. I ended up watching the ending on YouTube.
It was pretty clear the game was unfinished when I played it but I didn't think it would be pretty much impossible to finish if you chose the "wrong" clan.
There's been a lot of mods and fixes done since it came out but I still can't face going back to it.

It's a pretty great game with the mods. I dunno if they've fixed that particular thing, but it's a game worth replaying with with a different vamp type anyway.

Come to think of it there were loads of old adventure games back in the day that had to be abandoned because you could just get yourself into a unwinnable state. Maniac Mansion was a complete dick of a game.

Dante's Inferno on the 360. Specifically, when I realised that there was an achievement for killing 20 unbaptised babies. No fucking ta. Final boss in that game was it for me. Enjoyed it up to then, then the developers unzipped and pissed all over my face.

Final Fantasy VIII put me off the series for life, and I loved VII dearly. But after goodness knows how many dozen hours of playing, it seemed to be reaching the climax, with bigger and longer boss fights, until one - after hours of trying and failing - I concluded I simply wasn't levelled up enough or well equipped enough to beat. That got ejected and never loaded up again, or any sequels.

Problem with VIII is that levelling doesn't do nearly as much to strengthen you as Junctioning magic does, and if you don't realise that (all too easy not to, I know I didn't back when I tried it) you'll have a much harder time than usual...

Actually pretty much every game in the series that tied main stat progression to something other than basic levelling (note I'm not talking about things like the Job System, which was great, or like X's Sphere Grid, which more or less worked the same way as typical levelling) kinda failed at it.
The way 2 handled stats was a mess, in 8 levelling up was almost a detriment, Lightning Returns tying it to quests was decently fun but could still screw you over if you couldn't manage your time well...

Still maintain VIII was the best in the series, so can’t hear you, can’t hear you, lalalalalalalalala!

Alien Isolation.
Loved the whole thing. But then what I think is very near the end, after I had just jettisoned the alien into space, and I find a whole friggin nest of aliens, and I just noped out.

Yeah I lost all enthusiasm after that. It was like when I played Far Cry 3 a great game with a great villain in Vas, then he dies and then the game asks you to play all over again this time against a less charismatic villain. I just couldn't be arsed.
