I mean, for a business that was primarily centred around media events as a primary source of revenue it did seem incredibly odd how they really didn't seem to push that aspect hard with these British owned divisions. EG did a terrible job of pushing its convention plus the Pandemic really did signal to publishers that they didn't need to attend ALL these events, just some, and obviously it appears EGX was one of the ones they didn't give a fuck about. Hope they find a buyer soon though for the sake of all the people working in that group. It's definitely not a great time to be out of a job.

Did gaming news and reviews website ever actually get to be that profitable?
I get the feeling that these days the costs of running legitimate journalism via online advertising alone is incredibly tight given it's higher overheads compared to a influencer on social media with a YouTube channel, and you're competing for the same eyeballs. The valuations of these sites initially was all based on them making print media obsolete and owning the space for themselves.

Obviously the pandemic absolutely fucked them over but it's been a very pale shadow of itself.
