I've completely abandoned consoles after the PS2 era. Did not like PS3 and was never an XBox guy. Not counting an occasional handheld (3ds/PSP/Vita) I've been playing games only on PC since then. Reasons: cheaper games (Steam, key resellers, etc); free games! (Epic, occasionally Ubi, EA, GOG); and last but not least emulation. At my age I don't care at all about exclusives. Also, being poor does help. The only thing I would prefer not to have are multiple launchers, but, eh, can live with that.

Psiloc it's massively simplified compared to how it used to be, though. Most of the time you're fine with the drivers that Windows picks up automatically. Install a storefront like Steam or EGS and away you go. Any fucker can buy an off the shelf Alienware machine or whatever and be up and gaming with minimal faff involved. Of course gaming on Windows will never be as slick as a console experience, but you still barely need to know a thing about computers compared to the XP and older days. Chances are they'll just plug the HDMI cable into the integrated GPU port mind you, but there's just no saving some people.

Definitely the ease of console makes it the winner. I recently got a pc with two screens that is more powerful than a ps5. It can run helldivers on max at a around 100fps. That cos me £1700 ish I believe. It’s my first pc for over twenty years. Immediately I had issues getting the sound to work correctly via Bluetooth headphones and there is an issue on pc in helldivers with Bluetooth headsets where they only work with the mic disabled which I had to google and go into three menus to disable it on start up. I had to buy a £100 headset with a dongle as there is no current patch or work around.
A ps5 costs £450 right so under a third of the cost and so much easier and hassle free.
One thing that is far far better on pc though is game prices and the options of where to get codes and the input of a mouse is far superior in many types of games, especially my favourite which are shooters.

I think the thing that's still true is that 95% of the time you're fine but there is still the odd outlier and that can still be quite intimidating. This is why I like the Steam Deck system in theory because there's that element of fixed hardware and testing happening, even if patches can make things tricky.
And as for the division of work and play, that's another point for the Deck in my book: I don't want to see Windows when I'm not working which is one of the reasons I have a Macbook. If I didn't have an nVidia graphics card in my main PC I'd probably be running Linux on that already, too.

When I got my recent PC, it was generally fine setting it up even though Windows does its best to get you to link everything in your computer to Microsofts hivemind-snooping-marketing bollocks. I fucking hate MS for this. I also had an issue with my internet, it would not connect unless I restarted my computer every single time. This I did fix by uninstalling and re-installing the network drivers on the motherboard but I'm reasonably tech savvy. I doubt many console users could be arsed even with that 5 minute(because I knew how to) fix.

I always use the blocked no@thank.you address when setting up windows 11. It'll tell you to piss off an give you the local account option instead.
Hate that they took that away in the first place.

I mean, ultimately, who gives a shit? I dick around with computers all day and have very little patience for them in my spare time so I tend to gravitate towards consoles.
If I jump online, I’m often playing against someone on a PC. It really doesn’t matter anymore. (Although increasingly on crossplay you match with some numbskull running ultra settings on a pentium and 3DFX card at 4fps)

I remember upgrading from an Amiga to a PC, and spending ages in DOS with Autoexec.bat and config.sys trying to get Sam and Max to work properly. Great days!

Even back in the days of autoexec.bat files, I made the choice to go with PC for the same reason people are listing now: more expensive hardware, but cheaper (or free) games. Of course, back then you were mainly just copying the games off a mate at school, so they were totally free.

Immediately I had issues getting the sound to work correctly via Bluetooth headphones and there is an issue on pc in helldivers with Bluetooth headsets where they only work with the mic disabled which I had to google and go into three menus to disable it on start up. Bingo. Exactly the sort of thing I mean. And exactly the sort of thing I'd have worked on (with a techophobe end-user more often than not) at work. I understand the urge to hand wave things like this away as an easy, five minute fix, but it adds up. Also, never underestimate the scale of technical illiteracy in the general public. I'd have had no idea either before my current career. We're on a gaming forum, probably from a background where this sort of stuff in encouraged and learned from a very early age and all of our peers could probably handle the task of sorting out an audio issue. I can't stress enough the inability of most people to Google a simple problem and follow the steps to fix it. I don't really understand the need to argue that PC gaming is so simple now. It's whole USP is that it's literally endlessly customisable and geared towards techies. What would the appeal be otherwise?

Ugh. A common bit of troubleshooting at work requires me to know the user's username. The number of people who think their username is literally "Joe Bloggs" or "joe.bloggs@hotmail.com" because of this shit...

Yeah, it's too complicated, you have to download and install Steam first.
Also, mentioning exclusives as something positive is maybe a bit...bizarre. It's an artificial limitation imposed by the console producer to make the closed market platform more appealing. It's actually quite possible that at some point in the future, the EU will go after those artificially closed markets, like they are going after the closed markets of mobile phone apps at the moment.
And finally, PC gaming also has "exclusives", but they are mostly exclusive because they don't control well with a gamepad. Or because the developer doesn't want to jump over the hurdles that are put in place to close off a console's software market.

I have a PS5, Series X, 360, Switch, WiiU and PC connected to the TV. Admittedly the PC is relatively low spec and used mainly as a Plex server and emulation machine, but my boy does like to play some of my Steam library as well. I also have multiple Sony and Nintendo handhelds, and a Steam Deck.
Guess which one sometimes has "issues" that need resolving? Guess which ones never the kids or partner never ask me to help because something isn't right?
Honestly though what a daft question to have in 2024. For the OP, sounds like consoles aren't the right option (other than playing games legally), and I can see the appeal of PC gaming. But if you can't see why consoles are the right choice for a large swathe of gamers then I'm not sure what responses are going to change your mind.

Sounds more like an issue with this one specific BT headset, than a PC issue to me, but could be wrong.

Doesn’t work with the pc. Had to get a dongle one. It cut out loads even when next to the pc and straight up went crazy in helldivers but looking at Reddit that was a pretty common issue people seemed to be having with Bluetooth headsets.

If you’re over 30 and you’re still engaged in console wars/PC Master Race stuff then maybe it’s time to take a good look outside and go walk in a field or something. As nick said who gives a shit anymore?

Bluetooth on Windows is pretty shitty. I use Bluetooth headphones for work when I'm in the office and always have issues with it randomly not working. Does sound like Helldivers has some specific issues as well.
Obviously, all this isn't inherent to the PC platform, it is just developers not testing properly. For lots of developers it is going to come to money and it not being worth investing in the PC platform. For Windows it is inexcusable, as those issues have been around for years.

I think it's a bit like comparing trains and cars. One option is cheap and easy, but you're limited in the places it can take you. But also, I don't think the OP asks what the relevance is for the general public, he just build a pc and is wondering if he should keep his consoles. The rest of us made it about platform wars, because say what you want, it's an enjoyable topic.

It’s a fine topic in general, sure, it’s more the weird scoffing from some folks as if it’s an objective answered question that’s making me roll my eyes.

Speaking of Bluetooth compatibility. It'd be nice if the consoles weren't so utterly shit at it. Ended up getting a pair of Arctis headphones so that I have something that'll work with the SX, PS5 and Switch, but it's still a faff fucking about with a dongle. Just offer native BT support you fucks!
Plus I bought the wrong version and have to hunt down a micro usb cable every time I want to charge it... First world problems.

Bluetooth was noticeably out of sync compared to my TV in game mode. I could have just had a shitty dongle though

Yeah, consoles don’t usually offer BT because BT audio is absolutely terrible for latency, and also has a shitload of licensing costs to git gud codecs. Easier to cut off that compatibility nightmare at the source rather than fudge it in and put up with the complaints.

Cos consoles fucking suck Arf! Arf!
Jokes aside, I've gone full circle from spending loads on pcs when younger then abandoning them for consoles for a few years but have since drifted back to pcs and I'll never go back. It's not some elitest PCMR thing, I still play on my PS4 or my son's series s now and again but it's because this is where my library is. Hundreds of games, lots of progress and I don't want to start another off on another platform/ecosystem.
As many others have stated, tinkering is largely a thing of legend. I rarely upgrade drivers consciously (windows handles that crap) with the exception of the GPU.
Launch pc, install new game set to high/ultra preset and play. Maybe turn off vsync if it's on. It's essentially a more powerful console with more flexibility to how I want to play.
Now, I have recently had an issue with Deathloop which kinda shits on my point but I think 1 game in hundreds is acceptable. Fixed it now though.
Pcs are expensive and the initial outlay is steep especially if you have none of the other bits you can trust buy a nice tower with innards, but you need a monitor, keyboard, mouse, speakers, maybe a desk. If you already have one its easier to keep upgrading

Tinkering on PC is still present in some instances. HDR on PC continues to be a total crapshoot, as is any kind of modern 3D audio support (or even legacy 3D, really). And not that consoles do ultra wide, but that’s always annoying when a game has some weird implementation that a) doesn’t work or allow FOV tweaking and b) decides it’s not going to work with any GPU or display scaling so you have to set the desktop resolution manually every time you want to play it. Gotten better in recent years, but those are still my bugbears.

The lag on the OLED Switch is significantly better to the point where it's better than the plugin dongle I used to use on my older one. Barely noticeable. Also the steam deck is about as good.

If I was looking back on the last 7 years since the Switch came out, I would say that is still the most fun console/handheld I own. I still like my AAA gaming on PS5, Series X etc, but becoming a jaded older man, there’s something about Nintendo that reignites the passion for gaming. Steam Deck/Portal has somewhat replaced indie games I was buying on Switch. Although I mostly play really old 00s games on my Deck.
I think next gen I really need to be sensible, and not buy so many consoles/handhelds..
