It's obviously not Mario, but it's superb in its own right. It really is a joy to play whilst not quite having the same manic energy as Mario. I'll be honest interesting characters is not the first thing that comes to mind when I think of Mario, or any platformer come to think of it.

Not been following it. The gameplay in the trailer looks fun (and very mario), but it's a bit odd to hear that the character is likely to be some kind of mascot for Playstation, given the character looks like the most generic looking cute robot ever, and doesn't really stand out from all the other cute robots in existing games.
Then again, who'd have thought a chubby italian-american plumber would be an enduring mascot..

I'm always surprised Sony didn't milk Sackboy more. Great mascot.

I'll be honest interesting characters is not the first thing that comes to mind when I think of Mario, or any platformer come to think of it. I mean âcharacterâ obviously in a more colourful âiconic designâ kind of way rather than a âThis is Weedle, his parents died when he was young which gives him the motivation needed to harass Mario, he likes walks on the beach and his favourite colour is blueâ kind of way. Pretty much every sprite in a Mario game is instantly recognisable and some nerd has a t-shirt of it. But we digress. If you donât own a switch who cares? This looks fine.

I have the 4 Crash games and still havenât got to playing them. Booted up Astro, about to finish up the first level. Itâs impressive how much the controller speaker adds to the tactility of the game world. Most games donât use it but the controller features are so well utilised in this. Itâs the perfect type of game to lean into it all, but they also just seem to have found ways of using the features that just feel better than other teams manage to, including within Sony. We've been replaying Crash 4 in prep for Astro. Some of the levels take you to your platforming skill limit. Also Sackboy Adventures shouldn't be missed either. There's some very challenging levels.

Iâm slightly surprised it took 4 pages for âitâs a joyâ to roll out.
Cyber wedgie for that one. Tied with âgun-playâ as my least favourite recent gaming phrase. They both trigger involuntary twitches.

I did an internship at PC Gamer many moons ago and the editor at the time corrected one of my pieces for using the word "gameplay". Went on a big rant about how no one would ever use the word "bookread" as a descriptor for the quality of prose.
I thought it was a pretty ridiculous stance tbh ruling out shorthand used throughout the entire industry, but there we go. He was a bit of dick tbh. Rest of team were lovely though.

The thing about the crash games is that they are shit.
Good character awful games.
I agree they should have one more with sackboy, put him in tighter platforming games rather than physics based and you are on to a winner.

Then again, who'd have thought a chubby italian-american plumber would be an enduring mascot.. The bots started as part of The Playroom augmented reality app on the PS4. They lived inside the controller and you could flick them out and kick them about. Intentionality generic little bots. Astro was born for the âRobot Rescueâ minigame in Playroom VR, then went onto Astro Bot Rescue Mission (which was essentially a full-sized game based on that same thing), then Astroâs Playroom (the pack-in title for PS5), and now this.

Yeah, definitely want to know the name! I used to read PC Gamer a lot in late 90s early 00s, so almost certainly will know the name.
As for Astro being generic and sterile, I would say that is mostly true on the face of it, but very much intentionally done. The little guy is a robot and they have taken a clean sci-fi look for him. Certainly not hugely original. But the main thrust of the previous games (as well as being tech demos) was a celebration of PlayStation's history. The character is supposed to be a cypher for those things, so needs to be a bit of a blank slate.
Judging by reviews, it sounds like Astro has been able to transition into a character that can support a full game. I imagine there is still that reverence for the past, but I would think they could make a full game where that is the focus.

I'm sure he's great in the game, but if you stuck a picture of him on a box or a Happy Meal or something then I'd have no idea which generic cute robot it was meant to be.

Had some time this morning so managed to get the first series of levels done to just past the first proper boss. If the levels manage to maintain their initial quality, this could well be a GotY contender for me. I'm a real sucker for how these games celebrate Playstation history - gets me right in the nostalgia bone. As a side note, I played the first 2 chapters of Space Marine 2 last night and all I can think of right now is Astro Bot

Never been a fan of Crash games either (what little I've played, anyway). Give me a proper level that I can explore rather than some subway surfers style shite.
Cool character, even if he's just a skinny version of Taz.

I wasn't there for the original Crash (all desktop gaming for me as a kid, except a Sega Master System when I was very young), but did play the trilogy release. Complete 1 and 2, not sure if I finished the third one.
They are alright. Enjoyed them enough while playing, but can't say I thought they were hugely memorable. Certainly nowhere near the same league as what Nintendo puts out for their 3D platformer games. Astro's Playroom was certainly a lot better.

Conversely, I think Crash is a lame character design but I enjoyed playing through the trilogy remasters. 4 is quite different and looks and plays joyfulnessly. It's a really great 3D platformer- looks like a Pixar film, has fun gimmicks, great level design and is pretty challenging. Fortunately you can play all the games as Coco, who is much cooler. So despite playing and enjoying all the games, I still couldn't care less about Crash and barely associate him with his own series
