If I posted another one of my tracks up would anyone mind giving me some feedback? Don't worry, I'm NOT fishing for compliments. I genuinely would like to know thoughts on the mix so far and I totally don't mind if you all hate it, but just so I know if I need to add / reduce bass / guitars / vox etc etc etc Because this is my solo stuff and I can't rely on my own ears any more. I don't want to ask my mate because we're working on other stuff and I'm doing this a bit on the QT so as not to cause him any offence (I know that he wouldn't even give a shit but I would always rather be cautious). None of my other mates do music stuff so I would rather ask you. Of course man. Sling it all up. We have to critique ours for hours on end. Used to it! +2

That is really good man. Can't fault any of it mixing wise, seems spot on. Had to listen a few times as can't take all the instruments in each go, but all sounds tip top to me. The only question I have, is around the 3:12 mark, the drums are tapping the ride cymbal - is that supposed to be on each beat of the bars? Or is it like 3 and then a pause for a bit and then another 3 etc? It's just I can't hear it doing it on the each tick, but then maybe you don't want it on each tick?# Either way, killer stuff, and love the ending!

In all seriousness I was about to add that at some point. Then I talked myself down.

@quad
Yeah it’s meant to miss the first beat out to give it a bit more of a syncopated feel. Do you think the overheads are too loud and the cymbals a bit pitchy or are they okay?
Thanks for the feedback 😁. It’s actually quite comforting to know the mix isn’t too bad!!

Thanks for the feedback 😁. It’s actually quite comforting to know the mix isn’t too bad!! In that case, you've achieved your goal because yeah, they stood out as soon as I heard them, and my mind couldn't make up what was going on, but it liked it, hence me trying to work it out! So, cool beans I think the levels are fine - it's not like the cymbals were sticking out because of volume, it was more the slight change of syncopation that made my ear prick up. Yeah, I can hear all the instruments separately and nothing seems to spike or get lost in the mix. Top stuff!

wuntyI really like that. If I had to genre it, it's sort of Melodic Hardcore and so once again, it's right up my 'orrible, dark, dirty street. The mix sounds good to me, the overheads sound like they're fairly well centred in the overall sound and the cymbals are appropriate to the style. The balance is good, too. I can hear the guitars clearly but you still get the punch of the rhythm and the vocals sound right.

Christ almighty. I've just had an urge to learn the bassline for stayin' alive.
Have you tried it?
Fuck me, it's not easy!

Oh yeah that sounds like a good challenge. I'm trying to learn the bassline to Madonna's Like a Prayer, as played by the longtime Pink Floyd bassist Guy Pratt. youtu.be/yluPCLc1ltg

Hah, good luck then!
It's not the speed, it's the rhythm, I just can't get it at that tempo

I like how he grooves when he's playing root notes, as opposed to the crazy stuff. Less is definitely more with rhythm!

wunty Just listened to Tangenesis (fashionably late as usual). Fun fact, the missus passed behind me as I played it and said "what are you listening to, you wild youngster?!?" (loosely translated from Greek, of course) which made me laugh Even though my punk days are over (I would "classify" it as punk even though guitar is prominent over bass, your mileage may vary) I must say I enjoyed it. Full on energy, as aggressive as it should be, catchy refrain, solid production A couple of really minor comments (if you don't mind): - At 2:11-2:12 I hear a sharp "shooop" sound (not sure how to describe it). I cannot understand what it might be, perhaps an artefact?
- The "ooo" vocal chorus starting at 2:22 perhaps could be sung by more people (the full band), because it sounds to me a bit weak as it is. On the other hand, it could conflict with the main vocal line production-wise - decisions, decisions...
Main thing I take from all this, is that you got what it takes and that's what matters. If you can/want to devote your time and energy into your music, just go for it mate, there's nothing to lose doing it at this time and age

JonFE Thanks man Of course I don't mind! As much feedback as poss all helps! I shall investigate the shoop noise. I'm a clumsy fucking player and deliberately don't do much to clean up my shit as I like it to sound a bit more raw. Drawback of course is that I have frequency build up sometimes and yeah, weird fucking noises. I'll see if I can isolate it and get rid of it! Yeah you totally have a point about that chorus bit as well. It's starting to bug me so I'll do something about that as well. I'll maybe layer it up with some octave higher backing vox and see what it sounds like. Thanks for listening!

Well. I mastered my five tracks last night and early this morning after tweaking them and I think I'm happy. All that needs doing is to book in for digital distribution once I finish pissing about with the artwork.
Whoop.

Bloody hell. It’s on streaming services already. Landr are bloody quick!
Annoyingly the last word of my silly artist name is in lowercase which is so minor yet so irritating. They are going to make sure it’s fixed but may take a week or so.
Still. It’s out in the wild now. No idea as usual what to do with it so I look forward to it fading into obscurity faster than I can shit.

wunty it's really good. I like it and I'm not just saying that. As I said previously, it's right up my alley, sort of dirty punk n roll. But I think I've noticed a few little bits that are quite clever too, little off beats and pauses where you maybe wouldn't expect. I'll have a better listen when I'm out hiking tomorrow, but well done and carry on. 👍🏻😎 Dammit. First Floyd and now this. This week has really put my fumbling efforts to play Don't Drag Me Down into perspective! 😂
