You're probably right. It really fells absurd sometimes. I keep looking to see where the hidden carmas are.
Ah man you cant't be doing with stress. That sounds shit. Is the thing with your ex-boss a possible other job?
My slapping is really inaccurate and haven't actually done it since I did the Josh course back in 2020! I'm just picking. When I say octaves it's syncopated. Kept fucking up though then I stated to get cramp. I've got really crap. I still have the rhythm and the speed but the accuracy has taken a massive nosedive!

I thought Beadle was in my office this morning, it was that ridiculous.
Nah, this place is fucked now for internal moving about. Basically, the only way it'll get better if my current boss simply quits. And bizarrely, he did hint at this recently. It would be fucking great.
What notes are you playing then?

Erm. Pass. Es and Ds and a few others. It's more my picking being clumsy as fuck as well. Practice will help. The trouble with doing everything this way is I never really spend time on anything. I'll get a load of guitar and drum parts, pop them in to their channels and sit and do the bass for the tune. It'll take me between 30 - 60 mins and then that's it. I'll never play it again. Then, on to the vox which takes a couple of nights. Then rinse and repeat. So the bass never really gets a massive airing. I'm not one of these people that plays something for the fun of it. If I'm not playing for something, I don't play.
Even when I'm doing my own stuff from scratch like the EP I did a few months ago. I don't spend loads of time on it. I know early on if what I'm playing works or not, and then I just get it down. I spend longer on the guiatr parts but even then that's only because I'm layering up across multiple channels.

I think with bass though, if it's right for the song, then that's all you need really. Half the time you just need it there and that's enough.
What I sometimes do when we come up with a song is put something together for it, like a placeholder if you like, then we jam it out a few times till everyone else gets their bits and then the next few days, I'll listen to it at home through the stereo and just pick up my bass and play over it, and that way, it's so easy to go, "Ah, what I need to do *here* is something like *this* maybe" - I'll do that until it's memorised, and then go back to the studio the next friday and see how it fits in.
That's effectively my entire bass approach in that paragraph above - stick something on it, piss about with it *on my own* where I have time to improve it, then done.

Yeah that's similar to what I used to do in the bands actually. Come up with it then mess about on my own time but quite often, as per your point one, that would be what happens. I streamline it. There's something so fucking beautiful about an understated bassline that just slots nicely into the tune. It's there, but it's not there. But also, it's there.

It's there but you can't hear it. But you can feel it. And notice it if it's not there.
Bass is weird.

Awesome, but weird. I fucking love it, yet also if it's too high in the mix I instantly go "eugh". As much as I love listening to Maiden, Harris' bass is far too prominent and takes the bite out of all their recordings.

Yeah, I found a jazz bass sits better in our music mix. Just seems to click better with the other instruments. We've got synths and multiple singers though, so I can't just steamroll over it with thundering bass - the jazz suits it just bang on.
And harris is just mad

It's great when you find the one you like isn't it. I've not picked up my other basses for ages now.
I've been really good at not buying things recently too. But I've just cracked - I've been after a smallish keyboard that's portable and does really cool electric piano noises, but mainly for a Rhodes piano type sound. And if it had effects, then that would be the icing on the cake.
And I've just read the review of this motherfucker -
Man, that Clavinet with the Wah effect is Funk Central.
And it's £300.
Sold!

We finished a quick demo of this one yesterday and I quite like it. My mate says he's changing the drum and guitar sounds and I need to tidy up my vox and the levels but it's roughly there. We're up into the double figures of possible songs for this new album now so it's going alright. I'm finding that I'm getting used to singing in a slightly lower register now as I'm trying to expand my range. The high stuff has always been where I go to but the chorus here is lower than I would normally do. A few of our newer songs are like this and I quite like it. I also like my bass part. drive.google.com/file/d/16UtU0YMucG-GHsYfvohgjb8NldEtSgek/view?usp=sharing

That yamaha synth turned up. Its bloody glorious! Extremely simple, completely portable, stereo speakers built in, takes batteries and the sound is amazing.
I've just been sat in the sun doing a mellow tune with lashings of tremolo. Felt like a bond movie. Beautiful

I'll try. I've not hooked it up to the main monster downstairs and just using it on its own at the minute, but yeah, I'll see if I can get something down. It would definitely work as some cool freestyle over a drumbeat or something. Tell you what it sounds like - the synth player in the doors when he's playing rider's on the storm. That really mellow and chilled out wurlitzer type sound. With far too much tremolo because I'm a tremolo whore

I've got a specific cable for it arriving today so I can plug it into the stereo in the living room. They're fairly good speakers so looking forward to that too!

COMPLETELY missed this man! I'll have a listen later but at a glance visually it looks great. Very professional.

I can't play any instruments but have always had a hankering to be able to play a few tunes on a piano or keyboard (my dream is to play the Hammond organ cinema theatre style), I'm aware I can go and get lessons from a private tutor at £X an hour but is there a real cheap way to do it, I simply cannot afford the alternative, perhaps online or an evening course or something? Having a bit of a google/search and the choices seem endless and consequently a bit overwhelming so thought I'd ask you good people for any suggestions?

You can get a yamaha reface yc that does surprisingly good old school organs, Hammonds etc for £250. Or a midi controller that comes with thousands of sounds for around £170. Though it's best suited connected to a pc. All the software that comes with it is free though so you're all set from the get go. As for lessons, I've successfully managed to nick stuff from basic online arpeggio videos. Basically, any yt video that shows you basic arpeggio stuff is invaluable to get something up and running almost straight away. And the beauty is, you'll fuck it up the first few times trying to do it, and that is exactly when you'll stumble over something you think is cool. And then you take it from there. If the passion is there, you'll sort it

We had a gig last November. As it's now nearly February, that's about the amount of time it takes us to sort out one of the videos from the gig It was only recorded on a phone, so my bass synth and guitar caused havoc for the small mic it has, and so the overall band sound is massively coompressed unfortunately, but it was good on the night in the venue youtu.be/yMXw-c9u2Kg?si=mU2wq9_Jo1cu9kVW
