Anyone given Forgive Me Father a go? A retro shooter with a Lovecraftian setting. It's still in development. The art direction and general aesthetic is absolutely gorgeous. www.gog.com/game/forgive_me_father

I would like to see how Fatal Frame runs on Series SX and PS5. It's been a long time since we got a 60fps game in the series. It's been... well, since the very first one. Anyone wants to share screenshots?
Meanwhile, I've started Fatal Frame 3 again. It works pretty well on emulation now, though I need to keep the resolution at PS2 native to avoid visual glitches. It certainly looks a bit grainy at 480p, but the game is still good. Even if I do believe that the whole series hasn't aged all that well. When people started getting bored of the J-horror craze, Fatal Frame didn't escape its fate. What was terrifying 15 years ago doesn't inspire much of a reaction now.
I wonder, if we got games like Visage and PT back then, how would they have been received?

J-Horror is already 'retro' it's frightening how the years fly by. At the time it seemed so fresh, Western horror was still in the post-Scream slasher mode and was running on empty. Visage and PT would have been niche titles that most people wouldn't be aware of, most horror games are pretty obscure (that's also a horror game of that period with a sequel that's become obscure).
The nostalgia for classic Resident Evil and Silent Hill is real though, a lot of games will be coming out over the next few years that borrow heavily from them. I've even seen a PC horror game emulating PS1 texture warping.

I hope so. As much as Amnesia did for making survival horror popular again, first person non-combat horror has been done to death now

I could go for another horror FPS, feels like we haven't had any of those in a very long time.

Having just finished Carrion and being a huge fan of the AVP games in the past, what other ‘you are the monster’ games are any good?

I believe that Friday the 13th game has an offline mode where you can play Jason whenever you want.

Apsulov for instance was a bit more varied in terms of gameplay. Also by a swedish studio by the way.

Just completed Fatal Frame 3 again. I didn't remember it being this long in the tooth by the second half. It took me 13 hours, but I did a lot of exploration. That's quite long, but not nearly as insane as the 19 hours it took me to complete FF5 the first time. That was a drag.
Emulation was pretty great, with only some flashing textures happening very rarely. I should look into emulating more PS2 games...

I distinctly remember one complaint about Fatal Frame 5 being that the characters move relatively slow and the game content is stretched across mostly empty woods plus repeated journeys back and forth accounted for the longer play time.
I wonder if we're going to get an overseas physical release for Fatal Frame 5 'Remaster'.

There's a lot of backtracking in FF3 too, to be honest. And the areas aren't all that much smaller.
What really killed the pacing and length in FF5 was the ridiculous amount of random battles (whereas 1/3 had almost none), which was also a problem in 4 but not nearly as much. Plus, 5 really screwed up with the "improved" (?) combat system that relied on taking multiple pics before you had enough ghost fragments to deal significant damage, thus forcing you to spend more time in each battle than necessary.
I remember the last chapter alone took me almost 4 hours the first time, in part because I explored the entire map again to make sure I didn't miss any extra ghosts, and in part because it was one long gauntlet of boss battles.

Finished setting up my little retro station upstairs last night so along with Silent Hill 4 on the PS2 I've fired up FEAR on the 360 (and maybe FEAR 2). Also got hold of FEAR Files as never owned that. Think I'm about halfway through SH4 and I forgot how unnerving the twin victims are. When you spy them in the distance, they are just motionless, pointing right at you. Got the PS3 setup as well which I have SH1 on, so may also pop that on.
Toying with putting some money aside for SH Origins on the PS2 as it's quite pricey and would quite like it for my collection, although I'm not sure it's worth it.

Silent Hill Origins never got a re-release or PSN release so the physical copies that remain in circulation are in demand unfortunately.
If it's the only one you're missing and you're the sort of person who likes to have complete sets or collections you might just have to take it on the chin, paying more than double what the game used to cost brand new has got to sting though.
I faced a similar choice with Ghost Vibration, a PS2 horror game that nobody talked about, by the time I knew it existed the PAL version was already over the £100 mark, there was no US version but there is the original Japanese version which was still sub £20 so I just went with that instead.

Origins is decent but only because it sticks so closely to the formula of the early games, nothing about it is particularly special - the threatre section is cool
I've always thought it was ballsy/galling to go for an origin story when you take over the duties for a beloved series with so much lore

The motel section at the end of Silent Hill Origins is also good, you find peep holes and a sleazy secret room where somebody was doing 'video documentation'.

Cappy Yeah I seem to be trying to build a SH collection up. I have SH1 digitally on the pS3 (but for completion sake I'm actually thinking of trying to get a physical copy and a PS1...), and have boxed versions of SH2, 3 & 4 for the PS2. Got Homecoming and Downpour for the 360 as well. The other one would be Shattered Memories but I note that's even more expensive than Origins. Goes for around £200 these days, Origins seems to be around £120 for a decent copy.

It might be more economical to consider picking up a Wii for Shattered Memories, that version is still just under £50. If you're interested in anything else on the Wii or Gamecube (as long as you get a backwards compatible one), it might be even better value.
Silent Hill Origins can still be had for £70-90 unless you want a sealed copy.

@wuntyate are you collecting them for the sake of having a complete physical collection or for the purpose of being able to play them? Have you played them before? I don't think Origins or, especially, Shattered Memories are that well thought of by most Silent Hill fans. Certainly not worth that money to play, and there's always the chance of them being rereleased at some point

Both to be honest. I want to play them and also own them. Especially as they keep going up in price. I know Origins and SM weren't too well received but neither was Downpour and Homecoming and I liked them well enough. Cappy That's something I never thought of tbh. Might have a look into that.

The wii one goes for about £50. It's the PS2 one that seems to fetch the big bucks. But your Project Zero jobbies are worth a fair bit man.

I know Project Zero 2 was around £80 the last time I looked, with the other two not far off it. Okay not £200 type good but still not too bad.
Apparently, and I was trying to find it, Fromsoft's PS2 horror game Kuon is meant to fetch a fair price as it's so rare. I'd like to play that but there's no chance I'll get my hands on a copy.

I'm shocked that the Wii version of Shattered Memories has started hitting around the £50 mark. It used to be so cheap.
wunty needs to buy a Wii so he can also play Cursed Mountain, ah the controls haunt me still. Such wasted potential for a great take on survival horror. Monsters and the supernatural could have just been in the background with the real horror being the mountain itself.
The stories you hear about people just being left to die because there's simply nothing that can be done for them in the death zone.

Ohhh not heard of that. Sounds quite cool.
Are there any other PS2 era horrors worth a look? What's Haunting Ground like?

The PAL version used to be pretty cheap. Not anymore though, practically all the Japanese origin games are expensive now.
As far as PS2 era you've got:
Rule of Rose Kuon Michigan Obsure/Oscure II Clock Tower 3 etc.
Not all classic games but definitely interesting. Michigan is so bad, but I love it.

Cursed mountain is good. The controls will do your head in a bit, but the setting and the idea is really cool. I still have that knocking about somewhere for the wii.

Haunting Grounds is pretty good. I don't think there's any combat, just running away. One of the recurring enemies terrified me - "Miss..." Found it quite panic inducing

I think the last time I really panicked in a game was the water monster in amnesia:dark descent. Really got to me when trying to close that fucking door.
