I'm sitting here watching the TV, open-mouthed. This is like something out of a Tom Clancy novel. I'm no student of history, but as far as I can tell, the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki brought WW2 to an end as the opposing forces had nothing approaching that destructive capability and the conflict came to a close via 'peace through superior firepower'.
Clearly Russia is one of the best armed nations on earth, and Putin seems unhinged enough to actually use nuclear weapons.
I genuinely have no idea how this is going to play out. The time for diplomacy seems to have passed, and so it's either going to be a prolonged and bloody 'conventional' war, or something too awful to imagine.

The thing that's infuriating is that we knew this was going to happen months ago. Nearly a year ago the US said that Russia was planning on invading Ukraine in Feb 2022, and that's exactly what's happened. Everyone buried their heads in the sand hoping for the best and not preparing for the worst. I know NATO membership takes years but how did we not expedite it when it was most important? They've been helping NATO since 1992.

Is that why the US pulled all it's shit out of Afghanistan, because it knew this was coming?

Is it possible that the secret society (Tory elite and their donors) knew about this all along and will talk the talk (i.e. Boris Bluster) but do next to nothing, leaving all the heavy lifting with the EU (which we are conveniently no longer part of). Thus ensuring the UK does not get dragged into a war and the people that matter (Tory elite their donors) remain staggeringly rich?
Or does being part of NATO automatically mean we have to get involved at ground level as soon as its decided?

Putin isn’t unhinged crazy, he’s an ideologue. He isn’t going to start nuking things because it’s fun, the threat of it is enough. He’s extremely smart but is one of those that believes in the Russian motherland. He’s spent most of his political career trying to reclaim what USSR lost.

Honestly anyone panicking about this should try to avoid the news and social media. It’s not likely to impact us other than things like the cost of some things and if it does there’s nothing you can do about it.

Article 5 of the Washington Treaty as written says that all NATO members have to get involved, as "an attack against one Ally is considered an attack against all Allies" Not sure to what extent each country has to get involved mind you but as far as I can tell Britain (and everyone else) is at least theoretically required to, if Article 5 is invoked... www.nato.int/cps/en/natohq/topics_110496.htm

I've got kids and when somebody with the preservation instincts, inbred nationalism, KGB history, dictatorship skills and general derangement of Putin states "To anyone who would consider interfering from outside: If you do, you will face consequences greater than any you have faced in history. All the relevant decisions have been taken. I hope you hear me" whilst declaring war and launching a 3 way military invasion into another country. I tend to take notice and become slightly nervous...

Bollock, everyone should enlist and bring the fight to those commie fuckers. You jest, but the usual right-wing UK trolls and commentariat are pretty much already suggesting this. Here's the ever depressing, and constant reminder that wealth, privilege and education do not an intellectual make, Bella Wallersteiner: To be fair, some of the replies slayed me. I particularly enjoyed the 'Thank you for your service' comments guy.

Being nervous and aware is one thing but if you find you’re spending all day watching the news and reading about nuclear bombs coming then a break might be a good idea for a bit. Not suggesting anyone is but, like COVID, constantly reading/watching doomsday scenarios isn’t going to be good for anyone.
If you find yourself doing it then maybe consider a break.

my main concern would be not being close enough to the epicentre to be immediately vapourised.
Oh well, best watch 'When the Wind Blows" to cheer myself up a bit

I can guarantee that this thread is going to be even worse than the Rona one for bickering, and just generally being terrible for your mental health.

Fairly sure we'd be wiped out fairly painlessly in the SE England, especially Thames Valley area. You're either in London on within spitting distance of a military asset like and RAF base.

I imagine London and Glasgow (with Faslane just along the road) ) would be the first places for Putin to flatten.

FYI, it would take about 3 nukes to wipe out London. Then the SE of England would be a hell hole.
The rest of the country will level up compared to London.
