Ireland scrape through by 3, easily could have gone the other way. Really getting a kick in the hole this November.

I would've loved to see Argentina win that. (No offence, grey_matters - I'm a long-standing Pumas cheerleader, is all!)

Great 2 hours of people wanking on about Steward being safe under a high ball.

I like Healey. With you on Mullins, though - the guy's insufferable. "That doesn't look like a blood injury!" Pillock.
Not a disastrous start for England, by any means.
Can we stop with the rhapsodising about Steward now? He has been bang average as always!

Hard to take many positives from that - South Africa were poor, by their usual standards, and still England never looked like winning.
At least Borthwick didn't bring on Ford after 50 minutes, as though it was an incontrovertible law of nature.

Well that was a fantastic match, very odd refereeing late on though with the ignored TMO call.

France vs New Zealand was great, more of that please. That's the kind of stuff to get new fans in.
There was the commentary/pundit take that the Premiership is amazeballs and the England team have the players good enough to win a World Cup final, so this just isn't good enough. That feels like a stupid bar to set to me. Compared to the Boks I'm not sure how many of the England players are 1 on 1 better than their opponent. Maybe Marcus Smith, but he wouldn't really fit in with that game plan. (the Top14, well Toulouse or La Rochelle and Leinster from the URC have dominated the Champions Cup recently)
A more realistic take... England are in that 2nd group of teams with Australia, Argentina, Scotland. Maybe Ireland are dropping back there, who knows. They can psych themselves up to take it to the Boks and compete with them for a while. Then much like Scotland they're tiring much worse as they're attempting to play at 110%, so the last 20 minutes or so the Boks just tighten the screws. Everyone is knackered, penalties start adding up, handling errors give the Boks scrums to just melt you and they kick it deep and dare you to try something. On that kinda scale I thought England did well, even scored some tries on the way.

On another note, the Guardian once again couldn't even be fucked having someone watch the Scotland game on TV. So paid for a Reuters report. It's grating.
However they always do it for Tier 2 games. I eagerly await their next fucking think piece about giving more match time and attention to the Tier 2 teams. Mostly as I follow Scotland. The Guardian has failed to cover the following: Scotland going to USA, Canada, Chile and fucking Uruguay; Scotland travelling to Tblisi multiple times (and they always have a bee in their bonnet about Georgia), played in Japan outside the WC and even travelled all the way to Fiji to give Fiji an actual home game for once.

So, does Warren Gatland:
a) jump; b) wait to be pushed; or c) stay put, and try to turn things around?
I'm no fan of his, but I don't see a change of head coach producing the kind of instantaneous turnaround that some Welsh fans are demanding/expecting. The problem appears to run deeper than Gatland.

Yeah the WRU is fucked and the fans seem to think the whole mess can be fixed simply.
Considering the Union is basically skint, buying Gatland out of his contract and replacing with him with god knows who may just not be possible. I mean what top class international coaches are available right now?

After the deba le with the Women's team and them sticking with Gatland without, apparently, having a break clause for losing ELEVEN BASTARD MATCHES IN A ROW, the whole WRU needs sacking tbh

I suppose Borthwick's inability to shoehorn Ford into the mix after 50-odd minutes is a plus of sorts.
Also, to pick up on Zephro's point from last weekend, we'll be spared regular platitudes regarding Steward's (alleged) infallibility under the high ball.
Otherwise, pfft!
The fact that this England team can - and probably will - beat Japan does nothing but paper over the cracks, and the 6N will be another disaster at this rate.

I'd honestly welcome a loss. We probably can't afford to replace Sluts Bathwater but it is the only way there'll be a meaningful change to hopefully (HOPEFULLY) get a head coach with some pedigree again. It's shocking that EJ has been the only credible, more or less proven coach since Woodward

Ashton was certainly a credible and proven coach at club level, having done very well indeed at Bath; however, aside from a brief (and disastrous) spell in charge of Ireland, he was totally unproven at Test level.
Then again, so was Woodward when he took the top job with England.
