Vue is cheap for a one off ticket (my nearest one is £4.99) but as my local Cineworld is in band 1 of Unlimited it's £10.99 a month I very rarely go to Vue.

Being nosy. I know it’s only Tuesday but I checked the Saturday night screenings for Blue Beetle at the Vue and Odeon near me. Pretty much empty (and a few totally empty screenings).
Might change by the weekend. Might not.

Got a ticket for Friday's first showing at my local Cineworld and there were only about 4 other seats taken. This is for 11:00AM so always going to be a bit quiet but it is the school holidays.

I believe user beastmaster is near me. Perhaps I'll attend a screening with him and see what sort of notebook he brings.

Please record this. I need to see two curmudgeons rate bad movies.
Well, two I somewhat know, not random youtubers.

Well, user beastmaster enthusiastically doesn't like films. I just generally can't be arsed if I don't.
I'm also much more willing to leave a cinema if the film is bad, so expect it to be him asking me what I thought of X moment and my response will be "I'd left by that point, but you were too busy writing puns to notice"

I think Blue Beetle looks fine but I doubt it'll do very well. Moderately-scaled, family-centric superhero film based on a character hardly anyone has heard of. It's the sort of film that should have cost $50-75m and then it probably could have turned a nice little profit.

Though I still love them, there is a malaise with super hero films. The ones that seem to be best received are the likes of GotG 3, which is a pretty self contained story. Blue Beetle is a character that I like. As they are killing off the DCU, I would like this to do well.

Blue beetle has effectively zero name recognition, which is going to make it tough, especially in a really crowded summer of blockbusters.
I guess the same could be said for Guardians 1 or Ant-Man, but they had the benefit of being part of the booming MCU, and even then i think Ant-Man was one of the smallest MCU openings. And Guardians 1 had an awesome trailer.
I could see Blue Beetle being a pretty good straight-to-streaming movie, but I think it's going to really struggle in the theatres. It might do ok due to being more of a family movie, but I doubt it'll be big.

The Empire review lines up exactly with what I was expecting: a middle-of-the-road superhero origin story enlivened by a good cast and an interesting perspective (Hispanic family).
Quite fancy seeing it now. Wonder if the kids will wanna go.

In the theatre waiting for Blue Beetle to start, and it’s weird seeing back to back Timothee Chalomet trailers. Well, moreso the weird tonal shift from Dune 2 to Willy Wonka.

Not incredibly. Maybe 1/5 full, but for context, I don’t work Fridays so I tend to go to first screenings, partly to have the rest of the afternoon/evening off, and partly because I have a tendency to fall asleep when I watch movies at night. Maybe the only thing I’ve watched this year with a fuller theatre, in the same hourly spot, was Barbie, and it was only maybe 1/2 full.
I went to watch Slam Dunk a couple of weeks back and was the only person in the damned room, heh.

If ever a film needed promoting it was this.
Gunn has already confirmed they are keeping him in the new DCU though.

That’s a shame, but not surprising. There’s been no hype for it.
I liked it a lot. I got Raimi Spider-Man vibes from overall tone, but also all the Mexican-American cultural aspects really landed with me. Susan Sarandon really chewed the scenery too.
It’s maybe not an all-time great superhero film, but it’s my favorite thing DC’s put out since the Nolan trilogy.

You could say it's more to do with the perception of big movies, the complete oversaturation of the superhero genre with cookie cutter scripts, the complete lack of word of mouth marketing and people waiting to watch certain films via streaming due to the cost of tickets and quick turnaround time between cinema and streaming.

Guessing it will be available digitally within a month.
It's a fun film if a little heavy aimed at younger viewers at times. Good thing is Gunn has already confirmed the characters/cast will be back as part of the new DCU.

They probably planned on promoting it closer to release, WB was rather busy doing everything to get Barbie traction which obviously worked. The strikes came along just at the wrong time for promoting the film, no actors for the usual press tours means a low key release. This is what's going to get a lot of completed films delayed, if you can't promote them properly (especially if they're a new IP) you're potentially just throwing the film in the bin.
No chance Dune Part 2 comes out this year if the strikes aren't over in a few weeks.

Any movie would have struggled. They needed a big line in the sand and/or a big ‘forget that old bullshit’, definitive relaunch.
I suppose that was partly what The Flash was for but nobody gave a fuck about that so as far as most people are concerned it’s just the next bit of product being plopped out after a string of shitty DC movies. On the surface, it basically looks no different to all the other crap.

For a long time I thought this was going to a streaming series. They did a poor job promoting this. When it was announced it was amid a raft of other films designed to go straight to HBO Max - like Batgirl. But even before the Discovery merger, someone decided to give the film some extra cash to make it "good enough" (by whatever metric) to release theatrically. I think the budget went up from about $70m to $100m. This was before it started shooting. So yeah, it started life as a streaming film but they decided to bump it up to theatrical. I think even before the merger they'd kinda worked out that films of this scale need to be released theatrically to try to recoup their costs; unfortunately Batgirl was too far along production to get a similar budget boost and so was still destined to be HBO Max only, which is basically why it was cancelled (although prior to the cancellation there were rumours of a limited theatrical run in Europe - coz we don't got no HBO - which I was quite excited about).
