No easy way to get money, just make sure you’re up close to enemies when they die. Look for statues with glowing eyes.
Having max adrenaline is optimal for many reasons but it doesn’t make you stronger per se.
You’ll work it all out but it’s baffling at the start.

I'm at the fabricator room but no astronaut and I can afford the health pack..
Onwards and upwards!
Does money carry over when you die? Also, what is ether?
So much to take in!

I presume you lose all artifacts when you die as well?

You lose everything except ether and permanent upgrades which you’ll know about when you get them, you can’t miss them. Ether is used for cleansing corrupted items and chests among other things.

Yeah I've seen corrupt stuff, which I've been avoiding because, you know, corruption. Sounds bad 😅

Wow, according to the ship's computer I've played this for just over 6 hours! I have no way of gauging how well I'm doing. Still haven't killed that boss, but I enjoy exploring and finding loads of items that I have no idea what they do.
I feel like I'm getting better though, the RNG is a bit annoying when it comes to weapons, often I get the same 0 star pistol again. I'm starting to learn what the myriad iconography means, especially useful when navigating.
I've started staying away from scout echoes, or whatever they are. One was corrupt and almost killed me. Wiping out my health on what seemed like a good run.
Otherwise love it so far, still love the visuals.

Do you have the sword unlocked? Melee is very powerful.

Yep sword, weapon charger, hermetic transmitter and house key.
Still struggling on this boss, that 3rd phase, so tough!

9 hours in and still can't get Phrike. Phase 3 is so hard. Man this game is tough.

Incidentally, I can't remember the last time I played a game for 9 hours in a single day, must be a good sign 😅

Phrike is proper difficult.
I just pissed through biome 4 and boss on second attempt. Easiest part of the game so far, helped in large part by picking up an absolute beast of a hollowseeker which came fully equipped with some purple orb of death which appears every few seconds to melt any enemy unfortunate enough to be in the vicinity.

Something pretty similar just happened to me, a beefed up Hollowcaster took boss 4 down at the first attempt, but it was close as my health bar was minimal.
The build up in the music to that battle was just phenomenal on headphones.

Agreed. The music in general is brilliant but that boss approach was another level. Took me a while to realise it was all a rearranged Don’t Fear The Reaper!

Suspend cycle is good but saving to cloud then downloading from cloud to always continue a game from wherever you want, is great.
I haven’t got the time or focus to do rogue-lites.
This is miles better now, being able to save permanently (hacking it).
Finally nearing the end.

Recently started playing this. My first few hours were a struggle. Probably took 5 or so attempts to defeat the first boss, as I kept stumbling into them with either a crap weapon or no health.
Finally managed to do it and progressed to the second area. Initially the difficulty continued to be high, but I started to get to grips with it and actually managed to defeat the boss on my first attempt in a really fantastic battle. Got proper Souls-like feeling of triumphing over a real challenge, as I scrapped through with only 1 or 2 hits left.
The third area seems okay, except for arsing flying rocket robots. No clue how I'm supposed to deal with them, as the rockets home in on you, are pretty much impossible to dodge and direct hit will kill you in just a couple of hits (or a couple more if just caught in the splash). As soon as there is more than 4 or so of these appearing than I feel fucked. I'm really enjoying the game, but finding this particular enemy really frustrating.
The new weapons that have been unlocked also feel ill-suited to most of the enemies, particularly the rot launcher thing, which is far too slow (I thought the rocket launcher would be good, but not had much luck with it). The hollowseeker seems by far the best.

The rocket launcher is very good for the boss, but yeah you need a fast gun for those flying fuckers. You definitely get your own back vs those enemies later on though. Personally, I found biome 3 the hardest level.

The melee sword is your friend too. And rush, don't hold back.
I struggled at first as I like to hang back and pick things off and then go in and finish the rest. That doesn't work in this at all.

Yup, its much easier if you get stuck in. You do lose some opportunities to gain more health along the way but it does mean you collect *far* more cash, meaning you can usually just buy the health upgrade, an artefact and health from the shop which far outweighs the small increases for collecting three healths while at max health.

Mostly true, but I do find the best way to handle the flying ones that glow red and swoop at you is to stay clear of the fuckers. They have a habit of surrounding you and you just get attacked from all angles. My best solution was to screw the money and just take them out at range.

Finished it off last night. Stunning from start to finish. I will attempt to get the true ending at some point. I'm both relieved and sad to have done it.

Still stuck on biome 3. Managed to reach the boss about 3 or 4 times and keep completely messing up during the second phase (or limping in with no health). Then it is back to grinding through biome 1 and/or 2 to be able to go back into biome 3. Had about 4 or 5 sessions of doing this now and starting to find the repetition tedious.
It is probably a testament to how good the core gameplay is that it has been able to sustain that long with no really progress. Still, there is only so much of that 20-30 minutes of grinding that I can take when it only gets wasted by a moment's cock-up. Particularly annoying as Nemesis doesn't actually seem that difficult.
Think I'm going to have to take a break from it and come back to it.

I took a break at that point before the update. All I’ll say is you don’t need to do biome 2 again, just rinsing through 1 should be enough. That section is definitely the hardest in the game though, biome 3 can seriously fuck you up.

So how do you guys feel about Returnal in terms of value?
I’m definitely interested in the GAME, but the pricing for it has me moonwalking backwards into lava. In Australia the typical rrp of games has always been $100, with them actually available for $70-90 at launch. Returnal is $125! I think it’s $110 in store.
I could always wait of course, but assuming this PS5 really arrives before Christmas, I’d probably like to get at least one game actually made for it. Probably this or Deathloop.

Its also something that you can play for the sake of playing with no real goal. If youre struggling to find inspiration with your backlog, its something you can happily just blast through for an hour.

Returnal is the only PS5 exclusive that makes me envious, looking in from the Series X/PC side. Deathloop, hoewever, is also a real gem and I'd imagine you could get it cheaper to start with whilst waiting for Returnal to hit a more palatable pricepoint.
