Well, the old consoles had 8GB shared, but I still wouldn't want to play a game like Assassin's Creed Odyssey or Elden Ring on a PC with Windows 11 and just 8GB of memory. My laptop has 8GB and Elden Ring does indeed have some pretty annoying lag spikes which don't happen on my PC. Though that may be just From being From. Still, even playing something fairly old like Destiny 2, I have to close all browser tabs because it gets up to almost 7GB, and a good 512MB is reserved for the iGPU whether it's in use or not.
Anyway, 16GB has always been enough so far, but maybe once the cross-gen period ends, more RAM might become useful. But at that point, I'll probably be better off building a DDR5 system.
Who knows though, the Series S exists and it only has 10GB shared, so that may end up making things easier...

Hey EG FG nerds, what's the best monitor currently for mixed use including consoles?
I've got a dell U2715H here which is fine for work, but missing good stuff like HDR, 4k and most importantly these days, VRR.
Looking for something that'll last a while as a gaming monitor for PC (1070/i5 build so needs upgrading) and console (currently Series X, maybe a PS5 one day).
Is there anything out there that'll tick all those boxes? Probably want 32" for it to be worthwhile having 4k? Maybe a cheaper option to go down to 1440p but feels like a bit of a cop-out.

There kind of isn't anything which would tick all those boxes easily; the current 4K 32 inch screens don't have amazing response times and/or are choked by HDMI limitations, there are lots of great high refresh 1440p screens out there which your Series X will be happy running through but PS5 won't support, and HDR in the monitor space with very few exceptions is not good. Sony's doing a 27 inch 4K monitor which looks OK but the HDR on it is limited and it's going to cost a grand. I really like my Alienware OLED monitor but it's got its own idiosyncrasies and it's 1440 ultrawide. There are a few good HDR displays out there which do massive brightness but the screen panels on them handle motion really badly, becoming super blurry when anything moves. It's a cop-out, but it might be worth considering a 42 inch LG OLED TV if you want a single display that does absolutely everything.

I would suggest maybe considering ultra-wide. I got one a couple of years ago and it is lovely. Was also pleasantly surprised to find out that it is great for productivity as well as gaming. Mine is 1440p and it gives me much more screen space than just a regular 16:9 1440p screen.
I would say 32" is minimum if you are looking at 4K. You could probably get away without using scaling at that size, although eyesight dependent. Not sure about now, but it was basically impossible to get 32" at 4K a couple of years ago when I was looking. Gaming monitors were all 27" at 4K and that is just too small.
You also have to consider the amount of power you need from your GPU to push 4K for games. You won't be getting any high refresh rate either, even with top end cards. 1440p with 144Hz still seems to be the sweet spot.
Edit: just noticed the 1070/i5 in your post. You definitely will not be doing 4K games with that, I'm afraid. 1440p would likely be fine.

re 42" OLED - Nah, not going that big for my desk.
The 4k would just be for Xbox, but still - maybe not necessary as I have 4k in the lounge and will split gaming time between the two. Just sometimes I want to hide away and play in the office.
Since I don't do much PC gaming and it's currently mostly Xbox focused I don't think an ultrawide would be good for me.
Sounds like it's either wait and see on the Sony, or go 27"/1440p

I actually have a 32 inch 1440p monitor (Gigabyte FI32Q) as my second monitor; the HDR is nonexistent and the blacks are rather grey but otherwise it's pretty good for an LCD. 170hz, USB-C for my Mac, nice quick panel - it only looks washed out when directly compared to OLEDs. The DPI is still the same as a 24 inch 1080p monitor so it's not too blurry on the desktop either, in my opinion, and the extra size is impressive for videos etc.
On the flip side, I love working with the Alienware OLED - the ultrawide aspect means that in practice you're not far off having two monitors' worth of work space in the space of one and a half and for PC games it's really great both in terms of when games support it and the picture quality. Expensive, though, and hard to get hold of.

Makes sense. Worth also noting that PC monitors don't do great when not running at native. If you are doing a bit of PC gaming on it and just lowering the resolution, it probably won't look great (or not as good as it should). Guess that varies depending on the monitor.

If you're happy with 4K at 27 (which is extremely sharp) and can live without useful HDR there are a fair few higher refresh monitors on the market and with this year's models they are improving the high refresh rate through HDMI - last year's models had a lot of trouble in many cases. If you can check the Sony that might tick a lot of boxes.
One option on the PC side would be to run games at 1080 with an integer scale set through nVidia Control Panel which would look blockier but still very crisp.

I've still not really got my head around HDR. It's basically high contrast, right? So reflections in Forza look a bit more dazzling, fire in Elden Ring looks a bit hotter, etc... I imagine you don't need it to be as bright when the screen is inches away from your face, vs when you're sitting a few metres away on a sofa... Any side by side videos out there?

It's basically a higher colour depth too, one of the big benefits playing Elden Ring on my Alienware is that it massively reduces the banding in foggy areas, as well as making darker areas easier to pick out detail. Guardians of the Galaxy looked great as well as it's got lots of bright, saturated colours.
It also means that individual super bright areas don't bloom out to pure white or affect the whole scene's brightness as much.
If you get the chance to check out an OLED screen or a higher end HDR LCD in a light controlled room I highly recommend it. It's less about the absolute max brightness (as I find that it just makes me squint) than it is making sure you can see more of the detail in a scene.

I've got one of those Samsung Neo QLEDs. Think I just need some kind of side by side of a scene that really benefits from HDR, then the SDR version on the same screen, to fully appreciate it!

Hi people. I have been putting off an upgrade to my aging PC for ages. I just got an early access code for Baldur's Gate 3 and I'm thinking of investing in a new graphics card.
I'm not sure if I can just plonk a better card in my current system as everything is quite old.
So here's what I currently have: i5-4690 - 3.5GH 16GB ram Nvidia Geforce GTX 750 Ti (don't laugh!)
I was looking at local Classifieds and saw a MSI Geforce RTX 2080 gaming X trio (8GB) for a decent price.
Is it feasible to swap the ancient 750 for the RTX2080?

I'm using a hand-me-down PC from a mate with the same CPU, RAM but only went as far as upgrading to a 1660 Super (due to having 500w power supply and not wanting to spend too much). What kind of PSU are you using and what res are you likely to be playing at?

It’s feasible, I had pretty much that system but with a 1080ti. 4690 is going to be the bottleneck in some games, it’s 4 cores without hyper threading, but you could always try and find a 4790, which is 4 cores/8 threads. Also worth checking if the mobo has a Z-chip on it, don’t remember if it was Z290 or Z390, but anyway, those allow overclocking, because the 4690K and 4790K could easily be pushed from 3.5Ghz to 4.5Ghz with a decent air cooler. But for that you also need a “K” processor, the regular 4690 doesn’t allow it.

Stupid question (maybe)
Where do you guys get Isopropyl alcohol from for cleaning computer parts?
Can I just grab any old crap or do I need special gaming stuff that comes in an RGB bottle*?
*facetious comment but I do mean - is there a particular grade I need or anything to be wary of?

Nvidia event in a few more hours where it's expected to announce their next generation room heaters.
4090? 4080 12 & 16gb ?
Who the fuck knows ... 3090s have just tucked under the $1000 ceiling since the crypto crash and with rumours of excessive inventories still not released into the channel these will surely have to be a decent uplift to be worth the price premium
Ahh who am I kidding. I'll be in line for one so I can play ... err factorio a bit better?!

You will need your own power station for these cards.

You will need your own power station for these cards. AMD seem to be pushing an efficiency angle with their new releases. I wonder if they'll eke out a few extra sales than they normally would have given the state of everythimg.

For AMD to get more sales this round, they would need to a) hope nvidia doesn't introduce any new tech this year and b) vastly improve their ray-tracing performance. Lower pricing and better lower power usage hasn't gotten them sales on the GPU side as it has on the CPU side.

The power levels are getting a tad ridiculous now especially with Intel's new chips. AMD seem more bothered with the CPU market these days but the leaks around RDNA3 look surprisingly good.

They're showing dlss 3 and SER (think CPU out of order execution) but for GPU RT stuff.
This all seems a bit fanciful, ramping FPS for even CPU limited games. Be interesting to hear from teams getting some benches running
