They gave Joker a 1 star review and someone else in the same publication give it 5 stars. Different people like different things. One of them was for the Cannes debut and the other was when it went on general release. Not sure which way around the reviews were.
Stopped reading reviews years ago. I do look at the scores on the doors but there were far too many reviews giving plot spoilers away. Not just minor ones either.
Edit: Fuck U new page!

Honestly, I could see how someone could find it pretty funny, even though it mostly fell flat for me. While I don't dislike the movie as much as the internet wants me to, I could see how someone who falls into the Venn diagram of "Paul Feig fan, "doesn't really give a shit about the original movies" and "didn't get sucked up into the Gamergate-esque bullshit" would have a good time with it. It reviewed relatively well.

I really like Bridesmaids and it kind of tried to capture that tone but it failed miserably. It's absolutely dreadful imo. Every single joke misses the mark.

I went into it really wanting to like it as I do generally like Feigs films and it has a great cast but it not only wasn't that funny (although I did find some bits mildly amusing) it really suffered from being borderline incohesive and very disjointed at points. Pace and plot wise it was all over the place.

They gave Joker a 1 star review and someone else in the same publication give it 5 stars. Depending on what day you ask me, I might give you either of those answers. The impression I have of it is that it really is a piece of cinema magic and a brilliant, brilliant film, 5* Wud wotch aggen as they say on fleabay, except: Do I want to see it again? No, and I think if I do it will mar the image of it that I have in my head so for that reason I'm out.

I thought Joker was trite wank. A love letter to Scorsese made by a filmmaker with 1/57th of the talent.

As with most reviews, they are just one person's opinion and are only really valid if you historically tend to agree with that person's views. The guardians review is jarring though compared to the majority of others out there, even those that come down hard on the fan service aspect. Also it seems to contains a rather spiteful spoiler by going to great lengths to explain a major plot point without actually spelling it out because they're not allowed too. Thanks.

It's a film entirely carried by it's lead actor, score and cinematography, and those three elements are an important part of the cinema experience, but scratch behind that surface and its amazingly hollow and trite. Anyway that's a bit off-topic given this is a ghostbusters 4 thread. As far as the actual film goes... meh. I care about Afterlife as much as I cared about the reboot, and I only saw that as I wanted to get out the house a bit. Will wait until it's streaming.

I mean, any review is valid as long as someone has seen the thing, and gives their honest opinion about it (which is probably more valid than the opinion of someone who hasn't seen the thing). It's fine to disagree; even professional critics don't always agree! Though spoilers are shitty tbf.

Re: Spoilers in reviews
I think it's safe to say that unless you know for a fact the review will be spoiler free before you read it, then play it safe and don't bother. I stopped reading Empire's reviews years ago as soon as I realised they don't care how many spoilers are in there.

2016 Ghostbusters is awful, Chris Hemsworth must cringe whenever it’s on TV..
I’ll watch the new one, it doesn’t need to do much to better the last one.

Ehh, say what you want about the guardian review, but I didn't get the impression that they never liked the original. Just that they thought the new one is pandering nostalgia-bait.
Which... it kinda feels like it is. I guess the question is whether or not you have a problem with that (personally it's not a deal-breaker for me).

Calling it "a crude-ish comedy featuring Saturday Night Live alumni doing sci-fi-flavored shtic" is hardly the words of someone who was a fan, or even just liked it. I dunno, the whole thing just feels like being a contrary edge-lord for the sake of it
Personally, I'll lap the nostalgia up.

Hrm, guess I missed that bit.
But either way, it's nice to have contrarian views sometimes, as long as they're being honest about their opinion.

Its not totally inaccurate though is it? Those original two have plenty of innuendo in them

I saw Ghostbusters trending on twitter and one of the tweets was him randomly. Read a few of his tweets and he seems like a bit of a bell end generally.

Went to see this yesterday, not sure what to think really, it's not a bad film but it really doesn't "feel" like a ghostbusters movie somehow? Its not particularly funny, which doesn't help but taken on its own its decent speilbergesque pop corn folder. I'm a huge fan of the original ghostbusters, gb 2 was disappointing (somehow was less gritty) but this feels more like a film about a film called ghostbusters rather than a sequal.

I thought it was ok. Podcast was the best thing about the movie.

What new "IP" do young people have for themselves these days? I guess there are plenty that we don't know or care about - which is kind of the way it should be. But it always feels off when stuff that is 40 years old now is, cynically, repackaged for a new audience.
At this point I'd just like the old crew to do a film/play where they are looking for a book in Ray's occult bookstore and having a natter/joke while they do it.

They're back again and even older (apart from the dead one) in Frozen Empire on 22nd March

So the new one is reviewing quite badly which probably means it’s pretty good then! I’ll be taking the kids this weekend

Yeah it’s basically trading on nostalgia now.
That’s good enough for me.

Went to see Frozen Empire on Sunday. Huge fan of the original but I'm not 10 anymore so I don't expect any sequal to complete with that kind of nostalgia. This was fun, but not particularly funny, it does have some interesting plot things going on but squanders them and the OG lot need to be retired now. It's not as terrible as the critics are saying imo, but it ain't particularly memorable either.

I found it a lot of fun too, and whilst the critics do have points in the criticism they don't equate to a terrible movie in my opinion. If, and I believe they will, make a final movie with these particular characters they should really trust them to take the lead and retire the OGs. Particularly Venkman.
I am really invested in the universe, so I did kinda love it warts and all but I can see why it was panned if your job is to critique.
I'm also really intrigued to see what's on the cutting room floor, and why? It felt like the story was supposed to be bigger than what we got. I was expecting a lot of frozen New York, for instance. Then there's the tagline: "The ghosts from their past are back and more powerful than ever." .... ?
(Also, can someone teach me how to do spoiler tags!)

Yeah. Afterlife was right to bring the OG back but if they make more they need to leave them out of it now.

They'll have to as they'll be dead. But then a little thing like someone dying didn't stop them last time.

I honestly don't think I can be arsed to watch it. How many times can you bust ghosts? Twice is about right. Three times pushing it. Four times? come on now.

I mean, if we are honest with ourselves, its a five movie franchise with one good movie and a decent cartoon to its name. Its amazing anyone can be arsed to mine it so vigorously.
