Stuck windows on an older hp zbook g17. Older core i7, tpm 1.2 and it's installed just fine. Used Rufus to create a bootable USB without the restrictions.

I know this is really silly but have you updated the bios to the latest version? My MSI X370 has had several bios updates resolving TPM issues, and the latest even made the Windows 11 compatible settings the default. Which sorts out if missed something. This was the trick!

Does anyone have any feedback around how Windows 11 handles multiple monitor setups?
I have a fairly complex setup with a 3080: 3x 1440p 144Hz monitors spanned as one 7800x1440 by the drivers for my simrig 1x 1440p 170Hz monitor for work and other local gaming Nvidia Gamestream/Steamlink/Moonlight to my 4k TV @ 60Hz (mirroring the 170Hz monitor - which has to use the GPU port the bios appears on rather than Windows monitor 1 for some reason)
With windows 10, everything is working, albeit a bit fragile. I can swap between configs using Windows Key + P and it works. Local streaming is also working at 4k.
This feels like one of those niche things that Win 11 could actually improve on and make better, or just as likely, be unusual enough to have received minimal attention thus far and be a buggy mess.

Doesn't seem to be significantly different to how windows 10 does it ime

I took the plunge. All ok.
The HDR implementation via moonlight seems less buggy in 11.

Any Windows 11 experts here? I have clearly set a third party app to open my image files (.jpg, .gif, and so on) and yet Windows 11 always opens them with its own default app (whatever it's called). Another issue - video files. I have set VLC as the default app, yet when I double click a video file Windows 11 ALWAYS ask which app I want to use to open the said file. I can select VLC to open the file, but there is no "always open the file with this app" option. What the actual f***?

They've had a lot of criticism about this: 11 often ignores defaults and for some things is hard coded to always use the system default (most often with Edge but other things too,) and when challenged they said it wasn't a mistake but it was about consistency of the experience or some such nonsense.

@spacein_vader Yes, but there are tutorials out there (YT) that prove it CAN be done, but for some strange reason I cannot set it on my PC. Er, shouldn't Win 11 work the same on most PCs?

Er, shouldn't Windows work? A common misunderstanding.

Just checked my win 11 machine and I've got all media being opened by VLC by default and don't remember doing anything special.
Just right click -> open with... -> chose another app -> select VLC and tick "always open with.."
Just the same as Windows 10.

The problem is that there is no "always open with..." option.

"Default apps" from start menu, and then either type in the extension you want to change or scroll down and click on the app you want to use as the default?

VLC is set as default app for all video files, it's ok there. Checked many times. Could be something to do with my privacy settings? I am very strict and always ban as much as possible in this area. Also I run a special app occasionally which restricts every possible data forwarding to MS including telemetry.

Well that's fucking weird.
I've heard of file associations getting fixed and unchangeable before and it's been a symptom of something fairly deep down getting screwed up. I remember someone on EG posting about *.exe getting associated with notepad or some madness!
Can't see how privacy or telemetry would factor in but it's a bug you're dealing with here so who knows.
Is *.MP4 set up for VLC in control panel then? Yet it still doesn't default when in explorer?

Just checked but oddly enough there is no ".mp4" under VLC in Default Apps. But there is an ".mpeg4" is it the same?

Not from File Explorer's point of view. What does it say when you run dism /Online /Get-DefaultAppAssociations from an administrator command prompt? (You can properly fuck up things by going down this path

It says this:
<Association Identifier=".mp4" ProgId="AppX6eg8h5sxqq90pv53845wmnbewywdqq5h" ApplicationName="Movies & TV" OverwriteOnVersionMax="1" OverwriteIfProgIdIs="AppXhjhjmgrfm2d7rd026az898dy2p1pcsyt;WMP11.AssocFile.MP4" />
No idea if it's good or bad. And thanks for the help so far, you're awesome.

So.... When you go to the the "default apps" control panel screen, and then type .mp4 in to the box at the top where it says "Enter a file type or link type", it should then show Windows Media Player as the default app in the box underneath it? You should be able to click on that box and then set it to VLC, and that should stick and be permanent. *OR* (I've never done this so no idea how likely it is to help or brick things) typing Dism.exe /Online /Remove-DefaultAppAssociations on the admin command prompt should reset all your file association and allow you to start again and maybe can reconfigure VLC. **OR** (and this is advised not to do by MS apparently) Dism.exe /Online /Export-DefaultAppAssociations:C:\AppAssoc.xml exports all your file associations to a .xml file that you can then hand-edit with Notepad or whatever and then Dism.exe /Online /Import-DefaultAppAssociations:C:\AppAssoc.xml will then reimport them. I suggest you don't try those last two, but I know I would if I had a similar situation docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-hardware/manufacture/desktop/dism-default-application-association-servicing-command-line-options?view=windows-11

This is becoming ridiculous but:
"When you go to the the "default apps" control panel screen, and then type .mp4..."
This does nothing, as if no ".mp4" existed on my PC - which is obviously bullshit.
"Dism.exe /Online /Remove-DefaultAppAssociations" - this also changed nothing.
Just found out I have Windows Media Player uninstalled, so that might cause issues. Anyway I'll try reinstalling some apps and if nothing helps, might restore the system. THX for the help again.

No worries.
Does sound like there's something fundamentally screwed somewhere.
I tend to have a very low threshold for reinstalling windows if things start getting weird.

Right, first time Windows 11 user and how the fuck do you get a folder to display a thumbnail preview and why doesn't it do that by default?

I've spent all afternoon trying to install 11 on a thinkpas t480s. And failing. Just a whole range of different blue screen errors.

I thought it did do that by default (could be totally wrong though)
Might be a codec thing if you're talking about videos

I've spent all afternoon trying to install 11 on a thinkpas t480s. And failing. Just a whole range of different blue screen errors. worked out that the problem was a dodgy memory chip, that failed unless load. Took it out, problems went away. Contacted Kingston and they agreed an rma. Winning.

Oddly, this has sorted itself out after the newest Windows update.
EDIT:
Still had to use Icaros to remove the damn movie reel effect from all video files, again, after the update reverted them.
