Rogue Squadron was still pretty well regarded around that time so it's not like the Star Wars IP was in the toilet. I'd take real Star Wars with iconic elements like Storm Troopers, X-Wings and Tie Fighters over fake Knights of the Old Republic Star Wars that only had light sabres, astromech droids and jedi/sith as familiar elements.

I suspect Kotor has become an object of veneration from afar rather than something people actually still play. There really isn't any thread developers can catch onto to update the battle system because there's nothing there to start with. I replayed KotOR 1 & 2 not long ago and they hold up surprisingly well considering their age. The first is a pretty fun Star Wars romp; it doesn't have much to say at the end of the day but it has some good characters and is a good journey. The second is the best deconstruction of Star Wars ever made, but suffers from terrible pacing and a lot of jank (slightly better with the TSLRCM mod but still janky).
It sounds like you're stuck on the combat, but I doubt many people ever loved KotOR (and many other RPGs) because they were into that aspect of it. There are some ways they could go with it though. It's based on the Star Wars pen and paper RPG rules (in turn DnD based) so they could dig in and expand on that. Alternatively (and much more likely) move it in a Mass Effect direction. Real time shooting and lightsaber combat would be a big departure but I wouldn't be surprised given how niche turn based systems are these days.
That said, as much fondness as I have for the old games I'm not sure this is even something I want. The old games are fine for what they are, and I'm very sceptical of them managing to both keep what's good about the old ones and manage to add anything worthwhile.

I was looking forward to this. Wanted to play it with my kids. Weird that a remake would get so off track, as you'd think the scope, plot, etc.. would be pretty nailed down. TBH, they don't really need to change the writing, structure or anything. Just the graphics and UI, and make it so the combat isn't all decided in the first millisecond by a dozen grenades.

Sam Maggs was re writing parts of the story and after the backlash I'm sure the blame will be put on her.

I expected, without any real evidence, that this was going to be FF7 Remake style, total remake. From a gameplay perspective, I don't see them bringing the old systems forward to a modern game and I suspect they were doing a complete overhaul, as opposed to just tweaks. It probably wasn't even going to be turn based.
I've not played the original in a very long time, but I also suspect that the story beats would likely be fairly flat to a modern player, so they probably were completely redoing them, with re-writes. They may even have decided to change much of the structure, only leaving the big beats intact.
For a studio that is mostly focused on releasing old games on modern systems (which seem to not even be remasters, let alone remakes), isn't really that surprising that this turned out to be too much for them.

I attempted to play the original recently.
It... needs a lot of work.

Yeah, as mentioned before this a studio that primarily ports games, they don't make them from scratch so its mind boggling they were given the keys to this. Bluepoint they are not.

There is no way you do this on the cheap. I would imagine virtually nothing could be reused. You either do it properly or not at all and they seemingly chose the latter.

A shame really but not surprising. With the amount of effort that was required you may aswell just make a more "modern" action RPG. This remake wouldn't have done the numbers to justify the work.
From a personal view though I would have loved it if they had just done a proper remake.

The thing I read implied the opposite, I think. The amount of time and money it took to get the demo ship-shape turned caused the money men to prolapse and pull the plug entirely.

Just make another in the same vein as the originals. Fuck these gamers who want 10000 fps with 903k graphixxxxx.

At least now I don't feel the need to wait on this instead of just picking up the original on Switch and replaying that.
How was the sequel on Switch? Think I played a few hours of the Obsidian version (possibly with mods) and should really play the full thing.

They only recently patched a game breaking bug for it apparently so make of that what you will.

Fallen Order seemed to have a perfectly fine engine and gameplay, that with Kotor's morally grey style of storyline (and a bit more RPG, like character customisation and more role-based skills) would be amazing.

Very pleased I'm deep into my playthrough on the Switch with this news. A mate asked me why I didn't just wait for the remake and my response was why not play the original classic when the sounds coming out about this were that there would be changes, which immediately made me think of *spits* Final Fantasy VII "Remake".

I’d have really appreciated this. Don’t think I finished the first game when I finally tried it.

The switch version is just a janky port of the janky mobile version IIRC, which hadn't aged well when I tried it fairly recently.

I wouldn't mind playing it again on switch. I guess a better option would be to use the PC version I already have and up-mod it. But I want to play it on Switch dammit!

I really don't think KOTOR has aged as well as, say, Morrowind. But then I have a visceral hatred of almost everything that uses D&D rulesets anyway.

It’s weird how few Star Wars games there are, excluding the 20 Lego games. They should be able to pump out a couple a year of various genres.

It's weirder how few good Star Wars games there are, although I suppose much of that is down to fucking EA having the licence for entirely too long.
Off the top of my head, discounting Lego, and realising that some may not have aged well:
X-Wing TIE Fighter Dark Forces KOTOR/II Rogue Squadron
That's kind of it?

The battlefields are good, the N64 one was decent. And the new one where the lead character has a dodgy face is very good.

I liked the BFs to play, but the lootbox thing was disgusting. I think by weirdface you mean Jedi Outcast and I haven't played that one
Edit: Fallen Order not Outcast

And in general, Lucasarts was less about absolute bangers (though they had a few), and more about having good games very often. In the 90's, you knew that a Star Wars game was at least going to be good.
