Even Jay Z said he lost that because of Ether. Just googled that, quite interesting that he apparently took it in good grace and said sometimes you have to accept the losses in order to come back stronger. He has done pretty well for himself since, tbf.

Easily, the singles on Blueprint are pretty shit overall. Nah, it has some absolutely iconic songs imo, not least because of Kanye/Just Blaze's sample heavy production style. And basically started Kanye's career really.

Blueprint is a classic. Close for me between blueprint and reasonable doubt as his best lp. Still prefer takeover. He just dropped one verse on Nas and all the lines were hard because at the time Nas was dropping shite albums. Ether the whole thing aimed at jay-z and had plenty of dumb lines in it. For the record I prefer Nas to jay z .

Listened to Blueprint and Reasonable Doubt again and just not feeling him
It's just a personal thing, nothing to do with not thinking he's a good rapper. I think his stuff is a bit too slick for me. There's plenty of good tracks between them, just nothing I love

I'm the same. While I appreciate the skill and craft he has, and he has some classics, I just don't gel with his music.
And I think it's his voice. When he's doing the girls girls girls chorus it's like nails on a chalkboard.

Never even heard of Freddy, unless you mean Gibbs? @rummonkey how would you rank Nas' albums (at least the ones off the top of your head)?

Yeah Freddie Gibbs.
For me Nas illmatic and life is good are far better than all his other albums. Nas is one of my favourite rappers but he isn't the best at creating great Lp's. Stillmatic is pretty great and pretty much all his albums have classics on them.

I've listened to and enjoyed his albums with Madlib (Gibbs). Still need to dig deeper
Recently listened to Hip Hop Is Dead and there's a lot going on on there

When he's doing the girls girls girls chorus it's like nails on a chalkboard. At the time I was very anti him, because he was one of the driving forces of hip hop and RnB merging together, and I was a real purist about it. I hated Reasonable Doubt when it came out. Over the years I’ve mellowed/grown up and come to really love Reasonable Doubt (plus a lot of other RnB type Hip Hop I hated in the 90s).

I think this is where I am with him, although I wouldn't say I'm anti Jay-Z. I only started listening to hip hop recently but I listened to stuff from 90s/2000s first and still prefer it and anything new that sounds like it
The other thing that bothers me about Jay-Z, and I know all rappers do this, but I tried listening to 4:44 as someone mentioned it and it opens with another Jay-Z song about Jay-Z. The Black Album does this too - December 4th does my head in

Yeah but when an album opens up with "you dropped out of school you lost your principles" you have a big shit eating grin on my face from the get to.
EDIT: Going to add this bit in abouit the song 'Kill Jay-Z'
Plus, The Black Album has Public Service Announcement on it. Legendary

The halftime show at the superbowl was good fun. Nice flashback to the early 2000s.
50cent looks like he ate the old version of himself before he was hanging upside down.

Yes jay z black album is fire, need to put that on next.
Currently cleaning the house to watch the throne album and I forgot how much I love a lot of it. There are some very average tracks in there but maybe six or seven absolute monsters.

Reasonable Doubt > Blueprint. Reasonable Doubt is up there with my favourite albums of all time. And like you, I didn't like Jay Z at the time. Not till the Black Album tbh

Damn got black album on shuffle now. So many classics, moment of clarity is soooooo good.
Back at the time jay often was labelled as just commercial etc. Love this lyrics at that view...
For those that think Hov's bling-blingin' Either haven't heard the album or they don't know English They only know what the single is And single that out to be the meaning of what he's about And being I'm about my business, not mingling much Running my mouth, that shit kept lingering But no, dummy, that's the shit I'm sprinkling The album with to keep the registers ringing

The December 4th version is much better as well

I've been listening to a lot of Jay-Z over the past few days, what with all the talk on here. Dynasty was the first album of his I bought, and although I didn't like it much at the time it has grown on me since. I'd forgotten how good Soon You'll Understand and Where Have You Been are tbh.
It was only when "5 Mics" Blueprint came out that I started taking him seriously though, before that I always dismissed him as a commercial rapper (albeit with some absolute bangers). Which is somewhat ironic since he had a pretty late start in his music career and was apparently still dealing drugs whilst desperately trying to get a record deal, until he literally created his own record label.

You should have heard his rapping style when he was with Jaz-o. It was that rippity rap fast flow.
In fact if you listen to some of Jaz-O's stuff you can see how much he influenced Jay-Z.
His fast flow style was awful though. I'm going to have to listen to his stuff again to see if I can become more of a fan.

There are some very average tracks in there but maybe six or seven absolute monsters. I went and saw them perform that at the O2 Arena and it was amazing. Something I love about seeing Jay Z live, I've only seen him twice, but he sounds exactly like he does on his albums. He makes it sound effortless.
