Black Thought is the GOAT. I'm glad The Roots are finally getting the recognition they've always deserved.

The Cool is definitely his most creative album, but I loved Food & Liquor. It's very much a backpack album though. Just throwing Mural up here because as self-indulgent as that track is, it always kind of amazes me. I wonder if he performs it in concert. That'd be some incredible breath control. Love that

Speaking of breath control, be in awe of the greatest freestyle ever I just looked up freestyle to make sure but he made that up as he went along?

It was a combo of pre written stuff and improvised. When he struggles freestyling he goes into something pre written and then back into freestyling again when he thinks of something.

He's technically one of the best rappers ever, in with a shout as goat. He always outshines everyone when he's featured too.

Is Kanye considered a good MC? Of all the ones I've heard, he seems like the most limited. I do like him, especially on Late Registration
Has anyone got any recommends for good female MCs apart from Lauren Hill?

I'm not a Kanye fan. Well outside of his production and a few songs. His early stuff was much better and I can see why people were a fan, but his recent stuff is try hard bullshit. I find it unlistenable.
Lauryn Hill has a classic that you should check out. Lady Rage worked with Dr Dre and has some good stuff. Foxy Brown is OK.

Echo those statements, but I'd add that the only two albums where I'd consider him a good MC, College Dropout and Late Registration, were mostly ghostwritten by Rhymefest, Consequence and Common anyway, so I don't if was ever really any good. He is a great producer more times than not, though.

I've only listened to his first two albums and LR is by far the best. There's loads of sections where vocally he just doesn't nail it. Sometimes I can't tell if it's suppose to be comical or not (he seems to have a sense of humour?). I think I find the fact he doesn't come off as very cool endearing. Three of his albums appear on the list I've been working though (nearly done with it now) and it was giving me that 'old rap was better' feeling. The Cool was rad though

Have to say, having listened to their first three albums, I don't love OutKast. It's not a reflection of if I think they're talented or not, just not feeling it. Andre 3k's voice kind of grates on me
Listened to some Aesop Rock, MF DOOM and Jedi Mind Trick which banged or slapped or fucked. I don't know

I love the first two but I just can't listen to Vinnie Paz for very long before his voice gets on my nerves.

I love the first two but I just can't listen to Vinnie Paz for very long before his voice gets on my nerves. Have you listened to Sage Francis? I liked a few tracks on Non-Prophets but I haven't listened to anything else that made me think the MC was a bit of a wanker. I'm not sure what it was, maybe there was a lot of mysogyny in it (I think). I mean, most rappers talk about killing people so it probably shouldn't bother me. I suppose it's strange which things bother us/we give a free pass to for some reason

Yeah. I know they got a lot of underground props but imo, Sage has got better as he got older. His stuff with B Dolan is great...

@rummonkey do you like Jay Z? No. He's a great MC, has some amazing songs and albums, normally shines on features but I can't stand his voice. It's quite nasely and goes right through me. He's obviously very talented but it's a personal quirk that makes me dislike him. Plus I'm a massive Nas fan so fuck Jay z.

I asked because he kind of makes me think of modern rap with the way his albums are produced. Very showy. Kind of smothers you with the music, like Kanye. I had a stint of listening to a lot of older jazzy albums and they're so good. Wu Tang production is amazing but doesn't feel like it's fighting the MC for the spotlight I do like a good number of his songs but, like Kanye, definitely have to be in the mood
edit: Are Nas and Jay Z not pals

They have one of the most famous rap fueds ever. Stillmatic is basically a big fuck you to Jay Z. Listen to Takeover and then listen to Ether,it had Jay Z crying on the radio.
Kanye did a lot of production for Jay Z so it makes sense you aren't a fan.

Yeah, I find Slaughterhouse very underwhelming. Post 2010 I'd say Pusha T(Daytona), Run The Jewels(3&4), ASAP Rocky(Long Live ASAP) and Kendrick Lemar(Damn) are all good to great albums. Plus you have Nas' release that always need a listen. Hello, bass!
Pusha T and RTJ are decent. ASAP Rocky sounded like a pound shop 50 cent (10 cent?) and just didn't like KL
Is there anyone contemporary doing, er, proper hip hop?
King's Disease II was great. I've finished my list now - actually, got Supreme Clientele left but purposely left it until last - so I can start going into discographies now and I'm sure there's still plenty of good stuff that wasn't on it (Scarface wasn't)

Everything on it was great or amazing (even Jay Z, who I do like!)
Still feel like I know next to nothing about hip hop but at least it's a foundation. I find it more interesting than any other type of music I've listened to - never cared about technical ability with guitars or anything like that
Not going to bother with any kind of ranking list because really they're all so unique and excellent that it would be pointless to just compare everything. I'm not overly aware of beefs yet so I haven't worked out who I am and who I'm not suppose to like (but listen to in secret)
If I like 2pac, do I have to hate everyone?

If you haven't listened to the Griselda lot they're definitely worth a listen. Especially Benny The Butcher and Conway.
Freddie Gibbs has some great albums out recently.
It might be worth listing, say your top 5 rappers, and I'd probably be able to give better recommendations based on that. And obviously listening to your favourites discography.
And maybe look at a list of historic rap beefs and find the diss records associated with them.

On the subject of Kanye West, I do think he had some talent. And not just his initial stuff. I think 808s and Heartbreak was pretty cool and had a huge influence, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy had some moments and I legitimately liked Yeezus, for a commercial artist it had a remarkably brutal production, very atonal. I think that was the last thing he did that I actually liked, since then he just seems to have been consumed by his already massive ego, and possibly other mental health issues.

I think 808 and heartbeats influenced everything I hate about rap nowadays.
MBDTF was the last of his I enjoyed, was actually decent. His first 2 are undeniably good though.

I have to admit, I don't *like* the influence 808s had on rap in general, but for me it worked on that particular album, as an experiment.
The album he did with Jay-Z was very good too.
