Thanks, chaps - much appreciated.
Isn't Nier Automata a JRPG Huh. Fair point!
I mean, it's a Japanese RPG, so I suppose that makes it a JRPG by definition; however, I'd always (mistakenly?) seen 'JRPG' as a specific subset of the RPG genre. Stuff like Dragon Quest, Final Fantasy, Legend of Heroes, and Persona, with turn-based combat, party systems, etc..
I may be way off-base with that, mind.

Prioritise getting Ryuji's social link up whenever you have a chance, as when you get it to 7 it takes a lot of the grind out of the game. Having a chariot arcana persona on you will speed it up a bit.
That'll mean absolutely nothing to you for a while of course...

Torn between Tactica and Star Ocean 2 R, they come out two weeks apart and defo only time for one...
Currently 30 hours into Persona 4 Golden, fuck me these games are just perfection. Would love a remake like they're doing with 3 at some point, 3 will always be my fav and that remake looks absolutely incredible.

Just when I thought this game couldn't get any weirder... ... The cat turned into a bus.

So if I have three in-game weeks to gain some much-needed levels before tackling the third Palace... ... Mementos is my best bet, right?

Depends how far off you are, I did the palaces early and then spent the rest of the time leading up to the deadline on social stuff. If you haven't done any of the "other" place then might be worth a trip.

Thanks for the response!
It's late-ish June (c. the 20th, from memory), and I've just accessed
Kaneshiro's Bank, where I got spanked a few times by the Shadows that appear before the gang makes its escape; prior to that, my only deaths took place during the Madarame boss fight, so I'm feeling under-levelled for this particular Palace. I have two or three requests for help in Mementos, so I'm thinking I should focus on doing those before I do anything more with Kaneshiro.

I didn't do any Mementos stuff until I absolutely had to. It's easy to level up in dungeons. I don't think people getting tired was ever really that much of an issue so you can just grind it out. As with any Persona, just get the dungeon bits done in as few visits as possible

If you're struggling in dungeons, if you're playing Royal, you will have a Camera Strap accessory which is kind of busted and gives you back HP and SP on every ambush.

Huh, I must've missed that item on my playthrough. Ryuji's social link helps massively with the memento grind too like I mentioned. At level 7 you'll just instakill most low level shadows in memento as soon as you hit them with the bus.

I think SP management is the key to keeping going, which I found a lot easier in Royal than regular. I never really needed to grind to level up from what I remember (though I was only playing on regular difficulty), just make sure you make the most of the visits you do make. Ryuji's instakill ability only works on low-level mobs that you likely would have wiped out in a turn anyway, it's a convenience but not really useful IMO. There are way better abilities that I would prioritise over that one, personally.

Does anyone have any tips for beating Shadow Okumura that *don't* involve raising the difficulty? I hate messing with difficulty settings, as it always feels like cheating; however, there's so much cheap bullshit in this fight that I'll do it if needs absolutely must.

That fight is a fucking cunt. Completely random spike in difficulty, nothing afterwards is that annoying. I used a strategy guide and it took me at least 6 attempts. I didn’t need to change anything, just got lucky once

It really, really is - I fucking hate it.
It's as though the combat design team had a whiteboard full of mechanics they could use to make bosses harder across the entire game, when a new programmer came along, misunderstood their intentions, and crammed it all into a single boss encounter.
Nobody had the heart to tell him he'd got it wrong, so they just left it that way. (That's my theory, anyway. It makes about as much sense as, "They thought this was good game design", 'cause... well, just look at it!)

Ugh, I retried that fight for ages until I read online about putting the difficulty on max and did it first time once I did that
Lowest point in the whole game for me

Can't even remember the fight. Is it the one where you have to kill all the adds at the same time?

The very same.
If any of the adds in each wave is still alive after two turns - even if it's just one of the four, with a single hit point left - a new group of enemies will appear, all with full health.
Whatever HP/SP/consumables you used against the prior group doesn't replenish, of course.
Oh, and one member of each wave will usually be told to self-destruct at the end of your second turn, so if you fail to kill that particular enemy, it'll explode and deal massive health to your entire party right before the cavalry arrives.
It's just obnoxious. The fact that the fight's easier on Merciless than on Normal shows how poorly designed it is.

Yep, it's just bullshit design. Bizarre how it made it into this when the rest of the Royal package was pretty much a perfect mix of QoL changes and new content.
Just switch to merciless and get it done.

Sounds familiar. I did it on normal but can't remember how so can't help you there
How does raising the difficulty help?

Increased crit damage so you can hit the adds weakness and kill them all before the 2 turn limit

It’s definitely doable on normal difficulty, if you are playing on a higher level than that I don’t know, though.

I'll admit that I'm not helping myself by being (characteristically!) underlevelled - my Joker is at level 39, with the rest of the team in the same ballpark, while the recommended level is in the mid-40s - so that's on me, not the devs.
I still think it's a really shitty boss fight, though... and it didn't need to be.
They could've added all the extra stuff (waves of adds with only two weaknesses apiece, and resistances to almost everything else; a timer counting down from 30 minutes; two turns in which to clear a given wave; self-destructing enemies; et cetera) if they'd wanted to, and *still* kept the encounter fair by not disabling All-Out Attack for some nebulous reason or other!

One tip in case it's not obvious (it wasn't to me but I'm not the best tactician): maximize your attacks / damage per turn by starting with single target attacks before switching to multis.
e.g. if there are 3 guys in the group of 4 that are weak to ice, hit the first with a bufu for a one more, then the second, then use a mabufu to hit all of them (hopefully hitting the 3rd and getting another one more), then target the weakness of the 4th guy and so on. This gives you a lot more attacks and does more damage in a single turn than if you go straight for the mabufu and knock them all down with your first attack.

That boss on P5 Royal was an absolute cunt. I don't remember it being like that on P5, they must have tweaked it for Royal. Some bullshit!
Finished P4 Golden a couple of days ago, bloody tremendous. Got that proper post epic game lull now where everything seems shit!

Baton pass to those with psy for weakness damage on 4th or 5th wave? Use high crit physical damage and buff yourself with one of the stronger spells. What have you unlocked in terms od abilities etc?

rajinTruth be told, while I seem to have a reasonable spread of abilities across my personae, my "build" is pretty haphazard to say the least - I only have the barest of ideas what I'm doing on the fusion front, so I'm just going with whatever happens to look good at a given moment, and my elemental damages are spread out all over the place. Thanks for asking, though, and sorry I don't have a more coherent answer for you! Hopefully by the time the P3 remake comes around, I'll have a better chance of setting myself up for success from the get-go, instead of making it up as I go along.

Just up the difficulty and don't look back. It's not like the dungeons/combat is the draw for the game/series

I never spent much time fusing or trying to fill out the compendium, just made space by fusing what seemed to be the best bet and hanging on to the 2/3 I used the most

Party member wise, use Haru and Makoto. Third party member can be one of your chosing. Morgana is usefull for healing.
Fuse a strong psy demon, the 4th/5th wave is the hard part. After that its easy.
And yes strangely hard mode makes this fight easier. I suggest you train 1 or 2 levels and try some fusions.
The fight is the worst one in the whole game.
