Yeah, I'm not missing RT at all, really. It looks pretty amazing anyway.
The biggest thing 4.0 introduced for me is the quick casting of signs, which was a mod originally but I never really looked into those, but it really does transform the game. I mean, I mostly just use Quen but it's fun to occasionally press Igni.

Controversially, as I can't - even after tens of hours - recall what name is for what sign, I would like just to cast them the normal way. Can I still actually do that? I haven't tried. I'm going to try later.

I can't recall them all properly. I just know what each button does what.
Left trigger is flamey - Igni is easy to remember, like ignite.
B is shieldy. I think that's Quen?
A is force pushy. Aard? I dunno.
X is stun/mind control.
Y is trap. I think one of those last two is Yyrd or something. Or is that a kind of yoghurt?
It does mean that when I get a place of power buff I'm not actually sure what's being buffed.
The Witchers should use my naming conventions.

I just end up mashing them all as Gerald rolls about like a fanny.

It's something the TV show totally failed to do.

I actually can't seem to work how to enable signs to the controller, I've checked the option box but for the life of me I can't seem to get it to work properly.

I just went back to the original method.
I mostly used Aard and Igni. Lie down and burn, fuckers.

The mind control one, axii, should be more powerful but it's not that great for balance reasons, I think Lambert describes how he made somebody shoot his companion and then kill himself.
Best Geralt can manage is a temporary mind control.

I had Axii fully upgraded and you're supposed to be able to get enemies to attack each other. Never worked though, they just stood there looking slightly more gormless than usual.

That actually does seem better.

Just completed Heart of Stone for the first time. Really nice storyline, some fun quest chains with some great characters. Possibly the best story in game, if nothing else for the interesting shifts in tone.
Just started Blood and Wine but despite having a much larger new area it doesn't yet feel quite as engaging. Considering taking a break but if I stop now I might get distracted and not come back for a while.

I drifted away from Blood and Wine and didn’t finish it. Was hard to follow up saving the multiverse.

I have to be honest, as much as I'm loving this game the crafting UI is one of the worst I've ever experienced. The way it is set up and organised is so... Messy. Just for instance, how it orders upgrade schematics.
The quest menu isn't great either - again particularly the treasure hunt quests, it would be nice to see all the school of the cat quests together, for example.
The completed quests section is also a mess.
Ostensibly it's all alphabetical but it could really do with being subdivided

Finished Blood and Wine (at least the main story quest), so that brings my Witcher 3 replay (thought Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine were new to me). Yeah it's pretty good. I do think Hearts of Stone is probably one of the highlights. There was just a grimness to the tale that was quite rivetting, and the characters in it were quite engaging. The ghost in particular was a real highlight, but Gaunter O'Dimm and von Everec were great too. Blood and Wine is okay, - it was still good and narratively better than a lot of other games, but just not quite as interesting - it did offer a lot more new content but tbh I was getting a bit tired, hence why I didn't touch most of the side quests. I think my main problem with Blood and Wine is that I don't really like any of the conclusions. Syanna just isn't very likebale. Like, I get that she had a harsh childhood but I don't think that excuses her actions, so the ostensibly "good" ending where she reconciles with her sister can do one. I actually prefer the ending where she kills Anna-Henrietta and then gets killed herself.
I think my preferred ending is Syanna is killed by Detlaff and letting him go. But that still feels like a downer in some ways. I guess there's some moral ambiguity there though, which is always good. I guess it's telling that my favourite part of Blood and Wine was the subquest that refers to Gaunter O'Dimm. Of course the OG game is still pretty good. I think it maybe starts to drag a bit towards the end of the main questline, but there's some good stuff to be found throughout. Anyway that was a fun way to spend 100 hours and 33 minutes. I guess one criticism is that although the narrative and writing and worldbuilding do a *lot* of heavy lifting the gameplay isn't exactly amazing. It's perfectly fine, but towards the end it was very noticeable that essentially most quests involved going somewhere, using detective mode, following a red trail then fighting. And most of those fights aren't spectacularly different - another thing HoS did well was introduce some very unique bosses. It's no worse than most other gameplay loops and it's presented in such a way as too feel original, but it did become noticeable towards the end.

The game received patch 4.02 the other day, and if my eyes don't deceive me, the performance mode is fixed (Series X) and everything feels much more fluid again, like in patch 4.0.
Still some stuttering around Novigrad, but even that seems improved over 4.0. Wonder if Digital Foundry will assess the game again.

I've got to say, this doesn't run perfectly on PS5 - I get brief stutters every time a quest is updated or the game auto-saves, which is a minor annoyance in the grand scheme of things. Less minor was riding Roach into a shallow stream, falling through the world, and ending up in the middle of a lake outside the boundary of the map. Reloading my latest save resulted in a crash to the dashboard. Adding insult to injury, my current quest is now bugged! Apparently it's a common issue, but I'm still a trifle peeved. During 'A Towerful of Mice', the plague maiden got stuck in the doorway of its room, so I couldn't follow it per the quest objective. I walked outside the tower to see what would happen, and it teleported out to attack me. After the fight, my objective changed to "Talk to Keira...", and the map marker was inside said witch's house; however, she won't give me any pertinent dialogue. Seems I have to travel back to Fyke Isle to fix the problem! Grrr.

Yeah it's amazing how buggy the game is still. I frequently experience a bug where the camera will constantly tilt downwards and look at the floor when on horseback.
Also, after long-pressing the Xbox menu button to show the map, it frequently brings up a green screen instead, a bug I remember from the PS4 version.
The latest patch also seems to have introduced a bug where the frame rate halves when using your Witcher sense.
I also stumbled across a strange black horse last week. It had foliage around its front like a big beard, and when ridden, it glided across the landscape unobstructed, but its legs didn't move at all. I kept it for a while, but eventually lost it.
I keep a rolling set of 10 manual saves that go back roughly 10 hours, just in case I get a game-breaking bug, or I miss a Gwent card.

I also have a persistent graphical glitch on the inventory screen - a flickering bar that obscures Geralt's face.
Kind of disappointing and frustrating, really, for a game that's almost eight years old (and a remaster that was more than two years in the making).

Yeah that's what I can't get over. I can understand rare or one-off bugs in such a large, complicated, sprawling game, but CDPR have had more than enough time to address these basic, persistent engine glitches.
Does quitting the game and reloading your save usually solve glitches for you on PS5? I always quick resume on Series X, so sometimes the instance of the game can be a week old, so I'm less surprised by glitches creeping in.

I'm one of those people (weirdos?) who quit the game and turn off the console between every session, and I'm *still* seeing the inventory screen glitch on a daily basis.
Last night's bugged quest/falling through the map/hard crash was a new low for me. Hopefully it was an unfortunate aberration, rather than a drastic shifting of the goalposts - by comparison, I'll gladly overlook all the other stuff I've mentioned!

Weirdly the Switch version is relatively bug free, especially compared to the pc version I've played recently.

Huh, loaded up the PC version and it now appears to be actually in working order, Raytracing and all that stuff turned on and it's actually running pretty smooth.

Having invested a whole bunch of hours into this now, I'm still of the opinion that the combat is hot garbage; moreover, it runs like ass, and several of the gameplay elements feel positively antiquated by 2023 standards.
Despite the above, there's something special about this game, and I can't seem to put it down.

I was wrong about my earlier comment.
It was running okay because the settings had all turned down to medium.
On balance it still looks better with everything on ultra and ray tracing off.
Worse though, whenever I fast travel with ray tracing effects on the game would suffer a *MASSIVE* memory leak and start running at less than 1 FPS unless I restarted the game.

and several of the gameplay elements feel positively antiquated by 2023 standards. Some even back in 2015. I remember being really puzzled by how picking a plant opens up an inventory transfer menu, instead of just adding it to your inventory. Oblivion got rid of that 9 years earlier. It sounds like a small thing, but if you're picking lots of plants for crafting it's incredibly annoying. Yep. There's nothing else like it.
