I'm holding off until I hear more about performance and if my aging (5 year old?) i7 8700k will actually be able to play it at an acceptable level. Absolutely no point if I'm bottlenecked at 30-40 fps regardless of resolution or settings ...
Also really want to know more about this fabled Portal mode. The BF sub-reddit, which is admittedly just full of absolute poison, seem to be pinning all their hopes on it lol.

Those changes from the beta sound like good ones, although they seem to be ones they already had in place before it came out, so bit weird that they didn't just take a later build or delay the beta until they could release a more complete build. The footage that accompanies all these looks good too.
It is silly, but just little things like the animation at the start of the match gives me more hope. There is just that little bit of added polish that BFV really lacks, which gives me hope the rest will match.
Still, definitely not pre-ordering and will see what reviews are like. I didn't experience performance problems in my very short time with the beta, but it still felt pretty rough. Even with this being an August build, the extra couple of months doesn't seem that much more to make the necessary improvements. I do seem to be looking forward to this more than most though.

I just watched the specialist trailer. Hated pretty much every second of it. . I'm also hopeful portal can save it so the community can cut out most of this shite.

The specialists are my biggest concern, just seem out of place and balancing is going to be a problem from the off. Going by the jackfrags, westie videos I've watched they've more or less addressed the other gripes I had. Still can't get away with that turquoise UI though 🤔

It's looking more and more like Call of Duty every time I see it. I think I'll probably pass.

Yeah the specialists are my biggest issue and I'm perplexed that they're doubling down on this. I mean bf is fundamentally about teamwork and it's hard to do if you don't know what the person next to you can do at a glance from their outline. What's the point of having a medic class who is has an assault loadout? It's one of your reasons I disliked 5 because you had all these stupid skins running about but you couldn't tell what class they were just promoting that lone wolf playstyle even more.

My only real problem with the specialists is that there isn't any visual difference in the clothing between opposing teams. At least with 5 the ke-razy characters were team specific.

Maybe Portal is what they are banking on.. I mean will there be official game modes, servers etc or is it all fan made? I'm not even sure how fleshed out it's going to be at launch as it just sounds to good to be true.

This will be the first bf since 3 I haven't purchased day one. I want to see how it actually plays out with the specialists. As just mentioned in older games you knew which role each team mate player and it gently pushed you towards working together. Each bf has slowly gone away from this.
I wonder if the 3 and 4 servers are busy.

It's not that mad of a change is it? You could be a medic and not have any healing items in pretty much any bf from what I recall, or be support without any support gear, engineer without engineering etc.

I swapped out the ammo pack in BF1 for something and naturally a guy wandered over asking for ammo which I couldn't give. Never did it again after that. It's so ingrained into the series that support players give out heals/ammo that it's almost expected they have them.

Yeah, just watched that. That wallhack special looks ridiculous, as does the ballistic shield reflecting the bullets back to the shooter.

Exactly, it isn't like there's even one of each specalist. The wall hack is so powerful that you could have half the enemy team using it.
Battlefield can be a frustrating experience, especially for new players as they learn the ropes. BF5 was essentially vertical in its leading curve.. Having a good portion of the other team being able to see you at all times seems utterly game breaking.
It seems so cynical. They've obviously realised very view bought the overpriced elite skins in BF5, so they've reworked it so that borderline overpowered abilities come with them too.
If they just made what everyone wants they'd have a hit, they seem desperate to piss off the fans at every turn.

I don't know. I felt his comments on that ability were overblown, without knowing things like how long it can be active for and cool down on it. The video clip that accompanied the ability didn't look too ridiculous, particularly when you consider all of those are obviously set up to show the powers in their absolute best light. Perhaps just having nearby enemies show up on the minimap would be more suitable, but I think you could in theory balance the current implementation.
The ballistic shield feels worse to me, with the bouncing bullets. That is the kind of thing that will frustrate the person facing against it, until they work out not to shoot the person with the shield out. By that point it becomes a pointless part of the ability. Just remove the bouncing bullets and it will be fine.
The hacker also seems like he will be too situational to the point that he will be mostly useless.
Have they actually said that they will monetise specialists or is that the assumption? Would rather they went back to map packs if they are going to do that.

Have they actually said that they will monetise specialists or is that the assumption? Would rather they went back to map packs if they are going to do that. Everyone will get full access to all the specialists, I believe, including any future additions to the roster. That's included with the base game and does not require the season/battle passes. What they will monetise, however, will be the skins/adornments for these individual specialists. And having a skin system that affects full player outline in a game like Battlefield could potentially present problems in terms of identification and general readability in-game, making it harder to know what special ability/traits you're up against etc. With the system they've went for here, though, I guess it might be okay, as aside from each special ability you wont have the slightest clue what anybody's load out is now anyway, as they've completely removed the class restrictions that have previously defined the series. This is, of course, until a meta is established, and the 'optimal' heroes are identified, then you'll probably just see the same handful running around (looking identical until people start to get annoyed and drop some money on skins to try and differentiate themselves). As someone mentioned above, a lot of the core system changes they've made here appear to be designed to promote solo/lone wolf play, so I imagine the main game mode (All Out Warfare; AOW) is going to be heavily defined by which specials are deemed OP at launch or after each subsequent balancing pass.

Actually looking forward to seeing people trick shot off their mates shields to get kills around corners Yeah, I think we'll see a lot of pretty crazy clips of stuff like this. Grapple/Wingsuit plays as well etc. It'll definitely raise the skill ceiling, and genuinely top players will have a field day with it. The only risk, I guess, is that the gap between the amazing players and those of us that are perhaps not quite at that level is only going to widen I usually prefer to play Support or Medic, as my aim is just not what it used to be. But if they're toning down squad play, or worse almost entirely siphoning it off to the Hazard Zone mode (no use to me as I play as a random with no mates ./sob), then I'll probably roll with the best solo special, an ammo crate, and what gets theorycrafted as the best weapon and just chase my K/D score etc.

None of this portal stuff appeals to me at all. Mixing in different eras is a bit lame and it just feels like trying to get a normal game of conquest is going to be a mission in itself now.
Add in the dull near future setting and this crappy new specialist setup and this might be the first Battlefield game I’ve ever skipped.

I put around 200 hours into BF4.
When the server rental thing came in it became a nightmare.
You would struggle and struggle to get an ordinary game mode in a Dice server, because I think they sold off many of their servers to people that made broken and/or unfun modes.
That's what worries me about Portal.
On the other hand the thought of having a BF3 server, a BC2 server, a 1942 server does appeal. Or having modern tanks on El Alamein. I do agree mixing eras is lame. Too gamey.

Yeah it'll be interesting to see what their longer term plan is with regards to server persistence or potential rental services.
Some really good stuff in there, which has certainly perked up my enthusiasm; all going well I suspect I'll almost exclusively be playing in the Portal mode.
Still going to need to do Gamepass or EA Pro Play for the ten hour trial on release though, unfortunately. No word on performance issues at all, and the beta was in the borderline unplayable realm for me (frequent dips to sub 40 fps regardless of setting or, strangely, resolution).

The bad company 2 map gave me chills. A resurgence of EgMILF at some point?

I have to say I have been impressed with what I am seeing of this. I liked the beta, warts and all. They were pretty up front with the build being more than a few months old and they came out to say what improvements would be made (that bit could have been quicker alright). The drip feed approach to info over the last few weeks has been good and I love what they appear to have done with the portal game mode. I reckon the thing with this game more than Warzone or COD is the need to have a good/full squad at all times who you are communicating with to get the most from it. Really looking forward to it.

The bad company 2 map gave me chills. A resurgence of EgMILF at some point? We had a mini revival last year when BC2 came to Game Pass, so definitely keen to try the BC2 maps in 2042!

Interestingly, what appears to have been at first missed in the detail of Portal's capabilities/restrictions, but is now being queried by the BF community, is that the in-depth rules/logic editor is actually restricted to TDM or FFA modes. In other words, Conquest and Rush, the two most popular modes in the series, are not available to be fully customized/edited.
Now, bearing in mind that it is only through use of the editor that players will be able to mix and match previous game factions with weaponry from other eras, this seemingly rules out any servers that will enable players to basically play all of the 2042 content, new maps and weapons etc., but with the older class system of BF3. I.e. there's no way to entirely circumvent the new specialist/hero system in Portal if you want to play either of the two most popular modes in the new maps and with the new weapons.
I'll be interested to see how DICE explain their rationale for this. As obviously it does look at first glance that they might not want to create a situation where players are flocking to custom game modes in Portal to play 2042 minus it's controversial new flagship feature. Reddit is on fire again, naturally.

Preload is available for many platforms now. Annoyingly, it appears if you're using EA Play on PC for the 10hour trial you will not have the option to pre-load, despite the fact that EA Play/Game Pass players on consoles will. Odd decision.
Oh well. Guess it's waiting until the 12th to download. Will be interesting to see how performance handles; reports from the closed access thing going on now with games media and various content creators suggests that the console version of the game is in much better shape than the current PC build. Seems they have quite a lot of (particularly) CPU optimization issues still. This was my concern after the beta so very glad I held off for now. Will see how the trial goes.
