Btw, I did mention it a couple of pages ago, but In a Violent Nature is seriously one of the most interesting slasher movies I've seen in years. I'd recommend that to far more people than I would the Terrifier movies.

Hello new page!
The Substance: 7/10
Enjoyed it. It made me wince and it made me laugh, particularly in the final act.

Nail on the head. Watched the first one and thought it was utter toss. Plot, acting, cinematography etc. are all beyond naff. I'm baffled as to why it has such a following. I mean, in terms of that stuff is it really that much worse than, say, one of the Friday the 13th movies? You don't watch those for the intricate plots or cinematography or acting. You watch because you want to see a bunch of dumb horny teens get murdered in inventive ways. Which isn't to say that people *should* want to watch that kind of thing. But I don't think the appeal of Terrifier is that much different, it's just more extreme because it takes more of that to shock people these days. Yes it is. I don't watch the films for the things I mentioned specifically but I expect them to have a reasonable level of quality (which I don't think Terrifier had) At least the earlier Friday 13th movies had semi-decent acting, pacing, characters etc. Terrifier is more Jason Takes Manhattan. All imo of course.

Christ, there's even kids getting lashed with a homemade flail made out of surgical scissors in this. Not a horror fan personally. Can anyone explain what you get out of watching something like this? Assuming it looks real, isn't it just incredibly upsetting?
Basically, what the fuck is wrong with you people? I like horror, it just doesn't like me. My body responds terribly to stress so anything extreme can make me feel quite unwell (palpitations etc). Edit: more tension/jump scares than gore. Gore doesn't bother me.

Yeah I'm a massive horror film fan but shit like Terrifier I just don't get. I don't get my kicks from senseless gore, never have. There's no way I'm watching them. They look like shite designed to shock for the sake of it. Horses for courses, innit? Like I said when I was talking about that bullshit with Jon Snow as an Alcoholic Werewolf, sometimes you just want a movie to rock out with its cock out and I think people have latched on to the Terrifier because its the antithesis to algorithmic YA 'horror' Blumhouse churn out. The problem is, obviously, that probably more than any genre, horror chases trends. You couldn't move for found footage after Blair Witch and everything looks like a Blumhouse movie now. Like you, violence for the sake of it doesnt really do much for me so I found the 'Everything is like Hostel' era unbearable and you'd assume the genre will now over-correct into thousands of Terrifier rip-offs.

Oh absolutely. There's obviously appeal there. I just find gore for the sake of it extremely uncomfortable to watch. The more realistic, the more uncomfortable I get. I remember going to see Saw 3 in the cinema and having a panic attack halfway through (for the record, the first Saw film is one of my favourite* films and iirc it doesn't actually "show" much of anything at all, instead cutting away and leaving it to the imagination). I also had a panic attack and had to leave the cinema during a certain scene involving Ray Liotta in Hannibal.
Horror spans such a wide variety of sub-genres that I'm happy to leave the torture/violence porn stuff to others who get their kicks from it. Fair play to them. But I'm out. I like supernatural stuff, weird stuff, surreal stuff more than violent and slasher type stuff.
*That might be a stretch, but I like it.

Funny thing is, at the time around Saw 3 / Hannibal etc, I was studying medical photography and had to shoot a lot of real life gory shit. That didn't phase me. Probably because it wasn't being presented to me in the form of "entertainment".

I also think it's a reaction to/against the "elevated horror" stuff that we've seen over the last few years, where the real monster is childhood trauma or domestic abuse or whatever.
I personally like many of those movies, but there's a certain "back to basics" appeal to Terrifier. Art doesn't represent anything, he just likes killing people!

Yeah, Im a big hater of 'fantasy about fantasy' which is why the Werewolf movie riled me up so much. I wasn't really into Censor either for the same reason, even though it was well reviewed everywhere. I'm not much of a metaphor guy.

I should mention that, for all the defending I'm doing, I don't love the Terrifier movies. They do have some appeal for me, but they're not especially interesting as slasher movies, they're not really doing anything new.

I can see your point as back to basics, but basics referring to what exactly? Halloween? There is a motive to Michael Myers, compared to a clown who just likes to kill things.

More broadly though... I got into horror films as a kid for the shock value and almost as an experiment to see what my own limits were. I (think?) I grew out of that as I grew older and my enjoyment of horror films shifted appreciating how inventive and wild the stories can be. They're like my equivalent of watching Love Island or something I think – I love watching all kinds of cinema, but with a lot of horror you can disengage brain and watch an obscure, often bonkers story unfold. I am quite happy watching absolute dross horror films, far more than any other genre. I get a kick out of watching them play out, seeing if the third act completely shits the bed, etc. I'd counter the "why do people like horror films?" question with "why the fuck do people listen to metal music?" – now that's something I just don't get at all. Would rather stick my ear next to an active fire alarm. But like Nick said, horses for courses and all that.

I've seen that film you spoilered but I cannot for the life of me tell you anything about it. I don't remember liking it much. Think I'm the same. I don't like when films get too wanky either. Always end up disappointed and 9 times out of 10 the film makers / writers etc aren't as clever as they think they are, so it's a botched job. If you're going down that route, you have to pretty much nail it.

In the original Halloween, Michael Myers had no motive to kill people. He just did. They added stuff in sequels about Laurie Strode being his sister or whatever, but he had none of that in the original movie.

Things like Mordum occupy this space for me. Really, _really_ icky films designed solely to offend as much as possible. Those I can't get on board with. Related to the discussion – the horror cinema iceberg is interesting: www.reddit.com/r/IcebergCharts/comments/lavwrj/horror_cinema/How deep do you go?

What is the clowns back story? They kind of hint at one in 2, but I don't really think he needs it. I think the more lore you add to these things, the dumber it gets. See, for example, Halloween 6: The Curse of Michael Myers. Where Michael Myers is controlled by a cult using an ancient rune or some bullshit. He was better when he had no motive!

I absolutely hate horror. Ever since I watched the Evil Dead on a friend's VCR one lunchtime in the fifth form and didn't sleep for a month. Can't do horror. Just can't. Can't even play Luigi's Mansion.

I remember having a real issue with Martyrs. Fried a told me there was a message in there. If there was I didn’t find it.
And I only know a few scant things about A Serbian Film and I’m never watching it.

I'm pretty bad with pure horror games tbh, I just don't like jump scares that much. But I like atmospheric horror things, like (for example) The Last Door.

I like the fun horror (Freddy, Scream, Wrong Turn, Cabin in the Woods, Evil Dead, Abigail, etc..), and the Blumhouse type horror that tends to have something more interesting going on, but I don't really like the ones that are trying to just be OTT cruel and gory for gory's sake (Hostel, Saw (after 1), etc..)
As for games, Amnesia was amazing, though it did stress me out a lot. But then loads of games have gore and violence (from Doom onwards) but don't feel like horror games. I'm not interested in some of the stuff CoD or GTAV did with more 'realistic' sadistic violence though.
