The most grinding I’ve done is on that poor shovel puppet next to the swamp stargazer. I wanted to level up all my boss weapons and he semi-reliably gives a dark moonstone so I just battered him for half an hour

He’s down! Had to repair weapon on about 10%, got pretty hairy.
Then got unlucky with a stagger as he went straight into the dash x3 move so it expired before I could hit him.
Usual souls fashion; almost kill him on first couple of attempts, then get wrecked several times in a row, get fucked off and want to quit, but gradually get better.
Seemed to takes ages getting his health down with pokes every now and then. Phase 2 seemed to go smoother for me. A few lucky escapes, and the mechanic that restores a pulse charge is great. Gives you an incentive to keep going when you are all out.
Now for some Yorkshire Gold to celebrate.

I love it when you return to a game after a lengthy break and beat the boss you were stuck at first go.
In your face Green Monster of the Swamp!

Definitely a good idea to take a break, I'm proof of that. I'm not quite sure why I succeeded this time; I guess it's partly psychological as I was relaxed, assuming there was no way I'd beat it, so I didn't panic and entered a fairly successful flow. I did deliberately save throwables until the second phase (including the shot put, which came in handy for staggering it). I also have the ability to replenish my summon's health twice and saved both those for this phase. Tl;dr: there was some strategy involved but minimal skill as usual!

Oh my god Luxasia. Could be here a while. The last area of the game is certainly the weakest but by comparison still a marked improvement over say Elden Rings final third. That feeling of ascending a tower is quite cool.

That’s where I am at. Going to be tough.
I’m using maxed trident and don’t seem to be doing much damage.
Agree with last area being the least enjoyable too!

Completed, but skipped Nameless Puppet. Don’t have the patience for it right now. Not games fault.
Tip: Acid weapon is great for the final two bosses. Really made the difference.
Spectacular effort and the best soulslike so far. Even more impressive for a studio that’s not done anything other than work on updating a Korean mmo apparently.
Played it on Gamepass but feel like buying it to support the developers as will likely replay again in future.
Very much looking forward to what they do next with dlc, sequel and other titles now.

I wanted to wait until I'd finsihed Thymesia before getting started on this but unfortunately it's a bit too low budget. I mean, the combat is great fun but I kind of feel I've seen it all just 2/3ds in. So I fired this up. It's quite impressive technically isn't it? The combat is nice and crunchy as well. My worry is that I'm going to have to parry everything. Nice regain system with the block mind you but I'm still going to take chip damage over time if I rely on it. I've gone a dex build.

wunty, like I said before, parry is important but not Sekiro-essential, if my experience is anything to go by; you'll be fine, trust me!

Eventually you will get a feel for what you can parry and when to just dodge or block. It did take a while to click for me. But you don’t have to parry everything, a lot of the time you can just dodge. I recommend going for a weapon with a guard of between 50 - 60% while you learn everything. There is a lot to experiment with.

JonFE is dead right about the parry. In fact, I'd take it further: it barely matters. Blocking is fine, as though you lose some health, you can regain most of it through finishing off the mob. I don't think I've used it in a single boss fight - it might speed things up in terms of staggering but you can make do without it. Just watch out for the unblockable attacks by some mobs - where they flash red - as these need to be perfect parried. Or, like I do, just dodged - dodging works fine as a strategy (I think it was one of the first things I upgraded). One thing to add as it's something I really love about the game is the utility of throwables. I don't recall ever spending upgrades to increase throwables and lower prices but I've done it here. The sawtooth wheel is the most seemingly useless, but it can be used to bait enemies - and I actually finished a boss off with a stack of them once. It was glorious. Prick. The others are all really good - the shotput helps build stagger, so can compensate if you are not doing much perfect parrying; and the main throwables - thermite, throwing cell, carcass body fluid bottle (this game...) - are arguably OP when used against bosses or tough enemies with the right weakness; I say arguably as it's clearly a design decision to make throwables actually valuable, and a valid strategy, and I'm here for it. The only downside here is it will be a while before you get to The Red Lobster, where you'll find the vendor who has unlimited quantities of the above to sell. It's home from home for me, that place.

Thanks chaps. I'll tell you what. Killed the first boss last night and made good inroads in to the next area. I like it a lot. The combat is so fucking crunchy and responsive. It just feels like playing liquid gold. It's so smooth and enjoyable. I have been trying my parrying (after all, coming from Thymesia I'm in the zone a bit, even though I'm shit at it), but yeah, blocking and dodging seems to be good too.
I know the jury is out for a lot of people on LotF, but to have that then this... Feels like I'm being spoiled a little. These games have cemented that this new subgenre of action RPG that has appeared over the last ten or so years is firmly my favourite type of game to play.
Upgraded this rapier a couple of times too.
And yes, see what you mean about throwables. These cell things are bloody lethal. Taken out a couple of big chaps just by lobbing things!

Luxasia taken care of. Done the first phase enough times to be able to parry 90% of her attacks. Second phase I dunno if I still ever figured out fully, she has that many moves that move so quickly and deal so much damage it's hard to learn that phase of the fight. But Falcon Eyes came in handy for sure and might have gotten lucky with a parry or two. Still tho, I won and it was one of the coolest bosses I thought.

Curious to find out what happens if you did pick Rising Dodge, now it's a default. Do you just get the quartz back?

Hoping this appears in some Black Friday sales. Seems to be a real word-of-mouth hit and there’s not many second hand copies about nor has it dropped in price yet

Mostly importantly is everything parryable??? Please say yes.

Guard regen i think There was also talk about getting a couple of quartz's back or being available for purchase from Polendina to compensate for those who have picked Rising Dodge, but I'm currently at work and cannot check.

I went with an Advance build (which is mostly elemental damage) and had a great time! Only drawback is that there are no boss weapons that scale with Advance, but there are some great normal Advance weapons...
As for parring, it mostly comes into play on bosses and bigger enemies and it's absolute necessary* on their unblockable (see: red) attacks; regular enemies are not worth the effort in my opinion.
*unless you prefer to dodge that is...

Yeah there are now two more to buy at the beginning and one more later when you get another supply box. So three extra it seems plus two extra full moons for special weapons

Might start this tomorrow. Anything particular I should know? What's the most op build? Mostly importantly is everything parryable??? Please say yes. You can parry everything and some attacks can only be parried (unless you can run out of range) but you will know this because the boss/will go red. Timing isn’t as generous as Sekiro and works differently. Sometimes it is easier or better to dodge or just block. Keep you weight ratio under 60%. You don’t want to be in the ‘slightly heavy category. General consensus is capacity is the more useful but boring stat as it lets you wear heavier gear weapons /better puppet parts. Play around with weapons as you can mix and match handles and blades to make your own combinations. Like other souls games you will eventually be able to buy the lower level weapon upgrade stones eventually. The game is linear like a classic souls, and the bosses can be quite tricky so you can hit a wall sometimes and need to beat the boss to progress.

I got to the last boss (i think) last night and my carry stat is at 35, which keeps me at 59%, 4 non-boss amulets, ok armour and one weapon. I think you'd need at least 50 and be deep into NG+ to start to not have to worry about weight.
Having to dump into capacity does give you loads of legion, though, and a couple of them are quite useful (when fully upgraded).

I've been slightly heavy for most of the game...just can't seem to get down below that even though I've upgraded capacity a bit. I guess I've been overdoing it with some of the defense parts I'm using.
