Can't wait to meet him. Curious to know if he's worse than Isshin or Radagon / Jelly baby beast. He’s definitely a more Issin type as in a bastard but more enjoyable to fight, which you can’t say about the giant amoeba

Now I’m not going to say I cheesed Walker of Illusion but I merely wanted to see if it was still a thing so… eh, yeah. It’s still possible. Corrupted parade master was a bit tricky too. Ended up just baiting his leap and getting hits in that way.

As a slow heavy weapon user the stagger in this is fucking annoying. I'm mid swing of some concrete crushing downwards attack using a weapon bigger than me and the slightest quick attack from the smallest enemy cancels the attack, like wtf. But no, I can't cancel inputs mid fight either to adjust on the fly.

I’m sure I’ve seen something in the upgrades that makes you have attacks that you don’t get stunned out of. Might be wrong though.

Just beat the hulk I mean victor first time. Great battle, great music. Had zero heals left and I was one shot. Sweaty.

Now on the bone saw +7. Damage is slightly less than the pipe wrench but it's slightly faster. It's still so slow but the pipe wrench was ridiculous. I need to Google this potential stragger upgrade. Just in the swamp or what ever it's called. Stopped leveling strength now at 45 as the increase is now tiny.

The bonesaw was supposed to be a bit of a meta-weapon in the last patch but I just found it degraded ridiculously fast and kept bouncing off walls rather than enemies.

Yeah I've already noticed how quickly it needs fixing. Happens mid boss battle.

This is much better than I have it credit for during those first few chapters. Yes it is one of the best copies out there. Just cleared the swamp chapter! Onto 9! Lost my first amount of souls/ergo just now on those annoying boulders in the cave, knocked me off a ledge before I got back to my corpse. . Lvl 76 now, which I've no idea how that is Vs the recommended.

I'm still waiting on a non from game to match from when it comes to the levels/world/atmosphere. Some of these games have great bosses, cool weapons, fun combat etc but the exploring is never even close and you never get that wow you do in from games.

Would be good but From/Miyazaki are top tier genius level so would be a feat for another team to match. Likely to be imitated but never equalled. Lies of P is one of the best efforts. Especially as the studio hasn’t done anything else except work on revamping an old Korean mmo. If you get to the end of the game and watch the credits there is a cool epilogue which teases where they are going next. It could be really cool and hopefully they will have learned a lot for future games etc

One thing that disappointed me a little was the number of times you went out of your way to get to a collectable that was out of reach... only to find it's another bloody Urgent Repair Tool.
Would also have liked them to add perks to the wearables - no incentive to change outfit other than visual as it stands. Though I have to admit it was nice not to have to start every new area/boss with a few minutes in wardrobe.

Especially as the studio hasn’t done anything else except work on revamping an old Korean mmo. The most impressive thing is, arguably, its consistency. From swing for the fences so there’s nothing in this that matches their highs but there are also no lows to speak of and pretty much no jank, which isn’t something you can say of From games. There is usually something that’s broken, an area that sucks or a boss or build that’s completely unbalanced but there’s not of that here, really. It’s just solid front to back.

All soulsy games bar From's seem to be made by inexperienced devs as their first game, which is probably a factor in why they tend to feel less inspired or special. They're people who want to make a Dark Souls and are always trying to imitate, usually just adding a different theme or a new mechanic here and there
Nioh doesn't suffer from the same issues likely due to it being made by a studio with a lot of experience making action games. If anything, the gameplay in Nioh is much tighter and the game is more polished in general than From's games. I don't think it's impossible for people to match From (especially from a technical point of view), it's just that the only people making them are stuck in From's shadow and don't seem to have the confidence to deviate from the rule book (they all go for the same gloomy tone as well) so it's inevitable that people will compare them
The constant rebalancing due to community feedback is probably a part of that as well. Far too eager to please. The balancing in From's games is all over the place anyway - Capra and the Anor Londo archers are good examples of terrible balancing. Some bosses are so easy you can only assume they knew and just left it like it
Didn't the Lies of P dev make a significant change to the movement or dodge or something after the demo due to feedback? Seems likea fundamental thing to get wrong and change so late into development
I really struggle to shake the 'Dark Souls but not as good' feeling about most of them

The dodge adjustment in the November patch was to give everyone an ability that you'd have to unlock manually a bit later, to compensate for some enemies early on which would trounce you on the ground after a heavy hit - crucially, before you get the chance to unlock that ground rising dodge ability. The guys weren't impossible beforehand, and you only had to beat them once as they were elites, but they were big spikes that I assume they wanted to get rid of.
I largely agree about the Nioh perspective; Team Ninja were already experienced in high quality combat beforehand so the setting and Soulslike rules were added on top with aplomb to make my favourite games in the genre. One thing worth remembering, though, is that part of the reason they are so good is that they also responded to feedback, particularly from demos. Remember the first Nioh public demo where all your weapons and armour had durability and the expectation was that you'd just burn through equipment as there were limited repair items and your sword would snap after like 10 enemies? Running out of stamina was also pretty much death.

I think they mean they changed the dodge after everyone complained about how useless it was in the demo. They also changed the cancel windows, I think.
Everything was just a bit tighter and felt a bit nicer on the full release.
I was considering giving the game a miss entirely because in the demo the dodge felt deliberately shit to force you to parry which would have been awful.

Oh yeah - I don't remember having that much trouble with it but I didn't play all the way through the demo as I was impressed enough.
I think it is worth remembering that it's easy to get tunnel vision working on something, and even obvious stuff can come up when things get out there. I don't think the initial mistake is a negative or positive so much as fixing it up once others spot it. I couldn't stand the original Surge but they fixed enough up for the sequel that I loved it, for example. Then they made Atlas Fallen, for some reason.

This is also true. LotF has so many irritating graphical issues that I really hope they fix (if they take time out from fucking about with the bosses and weapons long enough). Have they made bosses easier? I thought it funny because I saw someone involved with making LotF come out on Twitter, in response to Lies of P toning down the health for some bosses and being like "We'll NEVER do that in our game" in a bid to appeal to the diehards.

No. In fact, as loto pointed out in the LofF thread, they've just buffed boss health and damage by 10%. Muppets.

Home from my night shift. Time for a nice breakfast then get cracking! Will likely try a non summon run next, not sure what build though. I'll have a look at what weapons I have. Is there Ng+ then I could just re spec (I assume).

bichii2 No, it doesn't, you have to initiate NG+ at the gazer. Also, make sure you have anything you need out of storage such as weapons, materials etc (if you used it) before starting NG+, as I think it takes a while to access storage again in NG+ and you may end up short.

Played for about 30 minutes this morning to see if I was going to like it, and I do, so I think I'll be carrying on with it for a bit. At least until Avatat Bumtiers of Shamdora launches anyway.
Any tips for a newbie?
