Destiny 2: Lightfall (PS5)
I went into this with pretty low expectations, but it wasn’t all bad. The story was confusing, nonsensical and somehow both under-written (lacking in plot, character, narrative development) and over-written (too much dude-bro banter; meaningless exposition; wall of text) at the same time.
But the main campaign levels were mostly fun without doing anything especially memorable. I probably would’ve enjoyed it more if they just gave you the new sub-class to play with at your leisure, rather than the piecemeal “training” sequences they used, although I do have to call out a really horrible end boss fight, which was only difficult by reason of a couple of enemies’ tendency to yeet you off the end of platforms. Honestly, I suffered 6-7 deaths before beating it, all of them due to falling into oblivion. That’s not fun.
There’s seemingly a load of inconsequential stuff to do after beating the story, but I think I’m back to not caring again. Too much of the game still seems designed to suck your time and attention for scant little reward in narrative terms, and I’ve long since given up being motivated by winning another gun that’s barely differentiated from the one I’m already using.
At the end of the day, I won’t complain about free on PS+ Essential, but this did nothing at all to make me remotely interested in the Final Shape expansion. In years gone by, I’d have lapped it up, but even just a cursory glance shows it’ll be yet another treadmill of seasons (now called Episodes and Acts, but basically the same thing) and number grind.
I’m back out again.

I keep wondering if I should get the final shape just to at least finish the story of the game I played for 6 bloody years straight (and that's before you even count D1)
Lightfall just did such a good job of killing my enthusiasm for their storytelling that I decide against it every time the fancy takes me. I'm totally over the grind too, it just felt like a second job that I had to clock in to... Maybe if it reviews amazingly and user feedback after a month or two is still positive, but even that's a big maybe.

Jedi survivor
Been playing on and off since it hit gamepass and overall I enjoyed it, the level design is better than 1st game although I need to watch a video at points what to do next from time to time.
The main villian they introduce was terrible and so was the annoying high republic droid, all the past stuff was awful. Big spoiler Bode turning on you was so much better and played out better then what ever the fuck Gera was suppose to be Some nice set pieces at points
The game is pretty much bug free now (on series X) had minor frame issue once, stormtrooper had no weapon and was a ghost and restart a checkpoint to make the platforms raise up near the end. Heard it was buggy at launch
Suppose to be a 3rd one being made, I do hope they can make better levels, also they can design anything, maybe do something better than just some old cave, desert level etc you can design anything
7.5 or 8 /10 (first game was a rough 7)

I'm totally over the grind too, it just felt like a second job that I had to clock in to... Maybe if it reviews amazingly and user feedback after a month or two is still positive, but even that's a big maybe. If the previous expansions are anything to go by, it’ll be discounted fairly soon anyway, so maybe worth waiting for a month or two. I’m sort of in the same place - I want to see the end of the story, but I’m not sure I really know what’s going on any more after Lightfall. “The Veil” just seems to be a name for some wibbly-wobbly swirly thing in space but other than the game needing a McGuffin to chase, I’ve no clue beyond that. But most of all, i can’t face the grind again. Perhaps the one blessing of playing this late is that the game threw a load of high level gear at me, so I didn’t have to grind at all to do the story missions. I can’t imagine the torment if I’d had to grind for gear and levels too… I admit I am quite down on the game - but that’s mainly because I absolutely loved it from Destiny 1 and the Taken King all the way up to Forsaken for D2 and then every release since seems to have gone in a direction I don’t like.

Animal Well - 8/10
'Finished' to the credits. There is clearly quite a bit more to do. Clocked in at 8 hours, which is shorter than I was expecting tbh.
I really liked it. It's breezy to play and the world is intriguing. Some really fun puzzles.
I need to find about another 30 eggs, which feels like a tall order. Gunna involve very carefully examining every nook and cranny in the map. Tbh, can see myself resorting to guides fairly soon.

Little Kitty, Big City - 7/10
To paraphrase one Troy McClure, this is the biggest case of false advertising since The Neverending Story. As I'm playing as this cat trying to make its way back home in this one city block I quickly realised that I was soon approaching the end after about 4 hrs once trophies started coming up about having talked to every animal and my list of collectible hats was filling up. Similar to Stray in that regard but I guess it was at least in an interesting setting. However not to say this is bad, it is exactly what you expect in how it plays and its playful tone. Platforming is fairly intuitive and puzzle solving is very light and feels like you're finding and solving something every few mins. Very relaxing game.

Death's Door After some narrative heavy games, I was after a more gamey game and this seemed to fit the bill. Limited story, combat heavy, a large map, secrets, upgrades, it's all there! What a hoot. Mechanically it's solid too, mostly tight controls and some good bosses.
But then, why wasn't I actually enjoying the game much at all? I couldn't really understand it. Nothing felt specifically wrong, or even bad for that matter. Was I just a bit fed up of games at the moment and needed a break? I considered it, but then I remembered I'm one of the 6 people on earth that actually plays and enjoys Foamstars, so surely it can't be that.
So I kept playing, not one to easily abandon a game, and as I went on I think I started figuring it out. While everything is well realised, my main issue is that the game is just far too routine. There's no hook, no special sauce, nothing that actually makes this game stand out in any way. It's to the point it honestly just felt a little perfunctory. Sure I was playing, but I was also just simply going through the standard motions of a videogame. Go here, fight boss, upgrade X, hit Y. I'm not sure I ever felt like I had a strong reason for doing any of it, more just I'm playing a game and this is what you do in games.
Of course, that routine is not unique to Death's Door, but in other games, you'll have a reason to push on. Whether it's the narrative, purely the gameplay itself or something else entirely. I never felt it with Death's Door, and could never distract myself from the fact I was just going through those motions. The combat is fine, the world map is fine, the bosses are fine. And that's the problem, it's just fine.
Eventually, The combat just feels all too similar through the whole game, and the exploration honestly felt like a chore at times. It's not that any of it is bad, but it feels like you've just seen all of this before.
A Juggler's Tale A short and sweet cinematic puzzle platformer. I generally like this genre anyway and it mostly held up. It's a basic story, told through a puppeteer who narrates everything but has some twists. Bit janky and sometimes the puzzles aren't all that clear (doesn't take much to figure out though), but it was still fun and can be completed in one sitting. Was only about £2 on sale.

Indika - 7/10
Weird narrative based game. Story was intriguing enough to push through, graphics okay, quite short so can probably play through in an afternoon. Some frustrating gameplay sections but not really the focus.
It's okay.

Terminator resistance - complete edition
Completed the main story and will be playing the DLC. Overall its really good still, while its not anything ground breaking (even when released last gen) its a good FPS and great terminator story (better than anything the films did in long time) It shows the dev love what makes the series works and its made with care
You start off as with weak weapons that can't destroy T800 models, even when you get a entry level red plasma weapon, going head to head with 800 is not a good idea. So you need to use stealth or hack turrets. By the end you are taking down HK and massive robots.
The lockpicking is just fallout but trying to do medium locks is not fun as moving the left moves too much as not precise and Hard is horrible. Hacking is just frogger and its ok
Hope the devs can do more games they like as Robocop game was faithful to the good films. Maybe they can do Robocop vs terminator or Judge dredd? (if they like JD series)
Will start on the DLC

I'm finally finished with Black Geyser - Couriers of Darkness (55 hours).
I kept playing somewhat sporadically as I kept running into performance problems. It got better once I had verified file integrity, but I think there might just be some kind of memory leak or something like that. The game also doesn't seem to care if I tell it to run on the integrated or the dedicated GPU, so that was weird too.
In any case, it's a Fantasy RPG that is probably most easily comparable to Baldur's Gate 1, though there are of course differences. The party companions have more detail to them for instance and there aren't nearly as many of them. The writing for them is fine, nothing much to write home about, but it mostly hits the right tone. What I mean is that seemingly incongruous style where humour and more serious parts of the story - including violence - somehow manage to coexist without clashing. The story is interesting enough as it's at first unclear what is happening. Similar to BG1 in terms of the adventuring around Mines and Forests and so on, but a little less straight-forward and the player and his allies are mostly busy reacting to other actors instead of slowly uncovering a conspiracy step by step like in BG1. Some of the more momentous events - especially towards the end of the story - are fairly cheesy and are really not that well written and the same is also true for the rather simple romances that just come out of nowhere.
The world and its locations are fairly extensive but more on the empty side. It's especially noticeable with the urban maps as they don't have much more content than the various Wilderness maps. It's a relatively large game and so spreads itself thin. Even so, there are still quite a few people to meet and side quests to be done. Not too much of it stands out and some of the companion quests seem to have ended up unfinished, but the game is surprisingly devoid of unnecessary combat bloat. There were only three or four larger combat areas with longer strings of encounters and it was always fitting narratively. So pacing-wise they handled it quite well.
The game can be pretty at times and the lighting creates a nice atmosphere in buildings, but the architecture is simple and quite uninteresting. Spell effects are pleasing and various reflection and lighting effects stand out too. There is a day-night cycle and weather like rain and snow and cloud shadows can be seen passing. The soundtrack seemed generic at first and while I never started truly liking it, some tracks seem better than others and there was also more variety in tracks and their style than I had expected.
There is a crafting system which allows making of potions and powders and the various ingredients and resulting items lead to a lot of item clutter and I inevitably ended up ignoring a lot of it. It doesn't help that there are a lot of specific terms that hide what they actually do. Like grouped "Strain & Pain"-effects or "Depression"-effects or unspecific terms like "Invigorated" or "Toasting". It basically introduces another layer that makes it more difficult to understand what is going on and sometimes just annoying to engage with the various tools and their descriptions.
Difficulty got rebalanced at some point as people found it to be too easy apparently. I played on Veteran, which is one higher than default and had a good time. There were a few encounters towards the end which gave me some trouble, but overall it felt like a good challenge without getting annoying.
Overall I had a good time with it and I can see myself getting the expansion once it's out.
Edit: Oh, and the many and often long loading times are a problem. The same is true for saving. And there are still quite a few bugs. Disappearing items were a real problem at times. Easily enough fixed by reloading, but still.

Gone Home (played on PS5)
I admit I’m very late to the party with this one and also can’t quite understand why I’ve never played it before, because (a) I’ve had it (via PS+) for years and (b) I really enjoyed Edith Finch and Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture, which it seems to get compared to a lot, as part of the “Walking Simulator” genre.
Anyway, I did really enjoy it. It was short enough to complete in 2-3 hours but in that time painted a compelling emotional portrait of the family the game centres itself around.
It likely helped that the game was set in 1995 and contained a load of pop culture references - I was (gulp) 17 myself in 1995, so while the story and characters were their own thing (if you know what the story is about, I won’t claim to relate to it on any personal level - I’ve never been a teenage American girl for starters!) but the setting, and notably the lack of mobile phones and social media, were definitely reminiscent of simpler times. Is it a sad thing that teens these days would never dream of scribbling letters to one another, or compile their chosen playlist onto cassette? Either way, it was a nice bit of nostalgia to find those things in a game.
The gameplay is really just exploration of a big empty house, picking up scraps of paper, some of which will trigger voiced notes from the player character’s sister. Through those audio and text files (and exploration), you gradually piece together the back story and explanation of why the house is empty.
I found that back story to be well told, with good writing and a great central voice actor playing the sister, and the way it wrapped up was quite touching in the end.
Well worth a play and it served as a really good game to play between sessions on bigger, sprawling RPGs and suchlike. It more than earns its place and reputation for moving the narrative exploration game on.

PreyI'd started this a few years ago and then for some reason just didn't continue - I can only assume another game came out and my fly-like attention span was grabbed by that instead. The recent shuttering of Arkane Austin brought it to mind so I thought I'd have another go. A week or so and 28 odd hours later, I'm done. An excellent game for the most part - atmospheric, intriguing, well-paced and - for once - the right length. I'm impressed at how well it pulls the wool over your eyes in terms of your neuromod choices: I was pretty much consistently satisfied I was developing the right skills, or upgrading the right weapons (shotgun first, then the Q-Beam, with some pumped into the golden gun). I don't think it quite sticks the landing - the final couple of hours include some tedium as you get mobbed by military operators and have to do a fair bit of tedious backtracking / running around . But it was very enjoyable for the most part. I've no real desire to go back to it despite the fact different choices would make it feel different (including story ones - what would happen if you didn't save X etc.? Would it play out quite differently?). I can't decide if it is worth shelling out on the Mooncrash DLC - I know it's highly regarded but it's also not cheap. 8/10

Terminator resistance DLC
The infiltrator DLC is very short, its a 1 shot with no saves or checkpoints. You play a T800 and need to get intel to find the target, things like checkpoints, guns, intel and soldiers are random each time. Get enough intel and you find the main leader of the area. Shame there isn't more like infiltrating resistance bases. A couple of easter eggs like the T2 hand and the 80's song from the 1st film
Annihilation line about 4 hours of content with Kyle reece and its quite good, set during the main game but you start it from the main menu. More of the same from the main game but its good. I went back and read the awful EG review, shame that gimp put people off the main game, no way its "avoid"

Animal Well
Completed with the good ending, or the true ending or whatever it's called. There's more complex stuff to do beyond that, but at this point I've had my fill.
It was very good! Though I don't think quite as good as all the rave reviews have suggested. It doesn't really help you much in terms of knowing where to go or wtf you're supposed to do. I'm sure there's some pleasure to be had from figuring it out yourself, but there's a bit too much tedious backtracking for my liking. Fast travel does exist, but it's pretty limited.
But the vibes are great, the platforming is great, the items you get for progression are great. And it's the sort of game where it feels like secrets are around every corner, and I admire that a lot.

Pretty much agree. The backtracking is fine up until the 'first' ending and then after that exploration is too laborious to make finding all the secrets a fun time.

Jedi Survivor (Series S)
Less than the sum of its parts, somehow. Everything is done competently, but it's just... not very fun to play? I don't know how to explain. The combat is polished but just unwieldy enough to be a bother. The exploration doesn't feel interesting, the levels are bland and been-there-done-that, and the modern trend of "small open world levels" is one I've almost never enjoyed. Luckily you can just play it like a linear adventure, but then it usues the same three locations all the time, and the story, while engaging at times, is both unambitious and unrewarding. Several plot twists come up later on which just don't make a lot of impact, either because the stakes never feel high enough, or because the whole thing is stretched too thin in the first place.
Technically it's very good, on Series S there are of course limitations, but it was a stable 30fps throughout and even looked fairly sharp when not moving too fast.
Feels like a step back from the first game, even though I wasn't enamoured with that one either. There are a couple impressive setpieces for sure, but it's not enough in the end.
6/10
Competent, but that's it. Doubt I'll be back for an eventual third chapter unless it's a big improvement.

Cocoon
Exemplary game design but left me a little cold. It’s an odd one. I should have completely fallen for it, it has a very clever and intricate puzzle design that must have taken years to design, wrapped up in other worldly graphical delights and a synth soundtrack but for some reason it just didn’t combine to wow me. I think because there is so much focus on the design of the puzzle- and in a way the whole game is a puzzle that you are constantly moving along i didn’t really settle into the game world so so to speak, it just feels like a background for the game to exist and I never really connected with it. I kind of feel like I’m nitpicking or being unfair because it’s design is so good - It weirdly too good for its own good. Deffo worth a play - maybe something suited for the colder darker autumnal months on a handheld with good headphones rather than on a big tv as it’s getting lighter!
Still 4/5

Apparently it's not just Blow. Sounds like they got a bunch of people in to talk about it and not just have someone reading a script or anything. Nothing I'm going to listen to but it's been so long since I played it and on offer I decided to get it.
Also, still not bothering with those damn Stars.

Resident Evil 4 Remake (+ Separate Ways) - PS5Absolute masterpiece remake of an absolute masterpiece. What else is there to say? The combat feels so damn good, the difficulty so wonderfully balanced. The levels and set pieces, bosses, characters, one-liners, they're all here and as iconic as ever. And it's super replayable. I didn't do every single challenge but I did unlock the infinite rocket launcher on my second replay just before the wrecking ball section, which was an extremely cathartic moment. The addition of the grappling hook in the DLC elevated the feel of the combat to even greater heights. Give Ada her own game! Celebrities Hacked - PS5Bit embarassed to admit that I bought and completed this one, including getting all trophies ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) . It basically consists of uncovering illustrations of scantily clad women via a line drawing game where you avoid laser beams and projectiles and running into areas that'll kill you. There's a free version that I came across while scrolling through the depths of PSN and it looked dumb and juvenile and for some reason I thought fuck it let's give it a try for a laugh. I did not expect to be so engaged by such basic arcade-style gameplay and ended up paying hard-earned money (a few bucks) to unlock all the levels. I actually found the gameplay pretty fun and challenging, and refreshing as I'm not usually interested in these simplistic arcade type games. Some of the music is great too. The "sexy" images are what you'd probably expect, oversized anime boobs in abundance (though no nudity and pretty tame stuff overall). If I'm perfectly honest I didn't mind looking at some of them. There, I said it. I made sure the misses didn't catch me playing it though. Woke take: the overall concept that you're hacking these "photos" off the celeb's phones was the seediest aspect and had no relevance to the gameplay, they could have easily changed that to make it less problematic. But, yeah, I played this game and liked it.

Little Kitty Big City (XB-S via GP)
Completed the main task, got plenty of collectables but not into it enough to rinse out every last one. A purrfectly joyful way to pass a few gaming hours. Light on plot and a few glitches encountered along the way but this puss mostly knows how to wear its boots proudly.
Pros
- Kitty goodness, we’ll animated and a well constructed environment - A quirky set of companions to meet - Fun for all the family - Funky “Fraiser-esque” Jazz soundtrack - Fun physics and cat characteristics to play around with - Good length not overstaying it’s welcome
Cons
- No real story as such - Puzzle elements very light - A few janky bits but nothing game breaking (had one reload without loss of progress with a bugged out task)
7/10 for me. Great GP game. Only Stray is definitely on another level (no pun intended) due to proper story, more polish and more adult feel.

Decided to go back to midnight suns after discussing it on here. It's probably my biggest love/hate relationship with a game ever.
The good: the turn based tactics combat is some of the best out there and people dismissing it as a card game are really missing out. This part of the game is a 9.5/10 for me and it's a shame they will never get to build upon it. The attack effects are really really good with Captain Marvel possibly being the highlight of them.
The bad: the abbey. The voice acting is absolutely woeful and the conversations are as well. It's like they were thrown into chat gpt from a couple of years back. The main character is actually the worst of them all delivering lines with no emotion whatsoever. This part of the game is just arse. The actual base growing and training side is fairly interesting though.
