Journey
I’m in a bit of a gaming rut at the moment but a single sitting playthrough of this never disappoints even after all these years and having uncovered all its secrets long ago. Effortlessly perfect.

Assassins Creed: Valhalla
I originally took a bit of a break from it for a few months but once i returned I couldn't put it down until I completed it and then ended up buying the Ireland and Paris DLC.
I'm really liking the direction the AC games are going. I don't feel much like an Assassin but the gameplay is better than ever. The Ezio trilogy will always be my favourite but Odyssey and Valhalla are much better games.
I still preferred Odyssey to Valhalla but I did like the new Stamina system in place and less open sea sailing compared to Odyssey.

I finished the story of Watchdogs: Legion last night.
I liked it better than I expected. There's nothing groundbreaking about the mechanics or the storyline (which is a rather obvious dystopian near future "machines and control are BAD!" thingy) but I enjoyed it nonetheless. I liked the use anyone mechanic - although it's not quite as simple as painted in the reviews, you can use any character that you have recruited already - and the choices for different mission approaches it gave, even though I ultimately used my spy and my solider for most stuff, because both had a lethal weapon option and after a while of trying to stealth in and those stealthy operatives getting caught, I'd inevitably turn to the lethal guys in revenge. Easier to just start with them by the end of the game.
Driving and walking around London was fun. My wife (a Londoner) came in a few nights ago and said "ooh, Camden Market", which is as much attention as she's ever paid a game that's on.
7.5/10
I may even go and complete some of side missions and stuff.

I followed the news of the game and attended some dev talks at Nottingham's Game City events (RIP) in which Robin Hunicke spoke at length about the rando-multiplayer design. Was really interested and jumped at the chance once released. I played it once. Never went back. But..... I simply did not want to spoil that one experience. That one full playthrough wherein I met another player early on and we finished the game together, exploring, working bits out, was unlike anything I'd seen before. It sits as a complete act. Good memory not be sullied by repeated plays.

I couldn't get over the area around Hyde Park and anything east of Holborn being completely wrong and so never played it again.
Edit: This is apropos Watch Dogs, not Journey.

I love sauntering around London in WD:L. Similarly, my wife sat beside me and asked me to walk to the bar she used to run just off Leicester Square. It's not a bar in the game, but she got a kick out of virtually wandering around the area she used to live, up towards soho etc. Likewise going to Camden Locks, an area she used to frequent and we had friends not too far from there. I know it's not all accurate, but there was enough there to enjoy walking around and seeing what we recognised.

Yeah, exploring Camden Lock was a little WTF. Looks fine on the surface, then you turn a corner and you're in a different area altogether.
I'd absolutely love a game with a full 1:1 map of London, as the virtual tourism appeal was the only reason I played WD:L for as long as I did.

Yeah, as I say and agree with dogbot on, is that I don't know London well enough either so I was happy to see some recognisable places then the rest evoked the feel of the place.
A 1:1 map would be nuts.
Pretty sure The Division games are 1:1, or close to it, but that might be bullshit. Don't know how accurate they are to NY and DC though. I suppose it's all about keeping the balance on what works as a game so there's always some accuracy and scale that goes out the window.

I think the thing that annoyed me most was the number plates.
Some of them were accurate, if dated incorrectly (because they have to avoid using actual plates, presumably). Others were just odd. As if they know there's a pattern to the plates, but they couldn't quite work out what the pattern is.

I wish AssCreed Syndicate was fixed on PS5. Doesn't even need a full 4K60 PS5 patch, just not have textures trip out and flash white seizure patterns.
It'd be nice to revisit Victorian London

@wuntyate @spookyxelectric I would definitely play Syndicate (and Unity, for that matter) again with a PS5 patch.

I loved Unity. Granted I came to it once a lot of the issues had been fixed, but it remains one of my fav AC games.
As much as I like the scope of the likes of Origins and Odyssey, for me, AC doesn't get better than Brotherhood and Unity.

I played Unity at launch on a base PS4 and honestly didn't have many of the issues that were all over the net at the time. Some framerate drops I think but nothing too bad.
Played Syndicate once I heard it has problems on the PS5. Good fun, nice ideas (like the detective stuff) and both games look gorgeous even now. Ubisoft were incredibly talented at world creation. It helps deal with the open world icon spam when it was so pretty to just walk around. Haven't actually played the newer AC's, Origins, Odyssey and Valhalla but used to absolutely adore the series.

That's the thing about Ubisoft games. I very rarely finish them, and the games themselves don't always amount to a great deal, but I love exploring the worlds they give us.
I can go from near future London, to Ancient Greece via a pandemic ravaged NY, Renaissance Italy with a detour on a pirate ship in the 1700s.

First play is definitive and its very hard for me to see them any other way.

4. Castlevania Portrait of Ruin - Nintendo DS - 3/5
Another good, solid Igavania. The dual character mechanic's fun but not quite built out enough; I would have liked more reasons to use Charlotte but once I got into the stride with Jonathan's whip I think I'd reached classic Castlevania anyway so I'm not too cut up about it.
I liked the variety of areas (though it's not as varied as it first suggests) and they do take some advantage of that in order to present more distinct map styles in the different areas, while also just making everything bigger. As a result it's a surprisingly large game, though one which doesn't take as long as you might think to play through as it's relatively low friction exploring. You're unlocking things to move to new areas much more than pass barriers you've encountered in older ones.
It's a high 3, and I don't think it would have taken much more convincing to move up to a 4, but in the end I'm happier saying it's very good rather than really great.

Fire Emblem Three Houses on the switch. Can't have been too bad, I started it last Sunday, so in 10 days I have put in 60 hours and 21 minutes. I really liked the characters. Dedue, Gilbert, Mercedes etc are memorable and I loved the little epilogue of what happened after. A little burnt out so won't be doing the alternate routes at this point but probably will do at some point, as long as they can be done quicker. The one thing that surprised me is the whole time I was convinced Rhea would be the big bad. They were vile and evil throughout so assumed that would go somewhere. But maybe that will be on alternate routes. Great game, last battle was tight and I only had 2 men standing and barely scraped through. 9/10

One of the other campaigns is quite a bit shorter than the other depending on your decisions. Blue Eagle is the only one I haven't finished so I don't know how it ends
I did Black Eagle first and then Golden Deer. I think BE was my favourite campaign but GD had the best characters
Who did you have it off with, out of interest?

Mercedes. She was also my most used character in battle. Dedicated healer with damage when needed.
The last battle surprised me. I did every optional battle, did all links etc so was overpowered all game and breezed through. (I like it that way, easy is good for me, if characters permanently died etc I would just get annoyed.) But that last battle had me on the edge of my seat, genuinely thrilling stuff.
Did the Blue Lions route by the way.

I did Blue Lions when I finished it the first time. I thought the main character was a bit Angry and Tortured, but it improved by the end.
It's a good game! I hope some of the grind gets tuned down in the next game, though. (I'm assuming it was popular enough to get the series continued)

What makes people go Blue Lions? Is it because Dimitri is so dreamy? I couldn't resist the group of weirdos, so went BE. I grabbed the characters I wanted from the other houses anyway
Reading these posts makes me want to play it again but it's the monastery stuff that puts me off. I enjoyed it a lot the first time and even the second but it was getting a bit old by my third playthrough, especially as the story is basically the same for all three houses up to a point

I remember somebody leaving quite a few screenshots back over in the RPS-forums that really showed off that appeal quite well. The sentiment of virtual tourism was definitely mentioned a few times back then.
To be honest a lot of open world games now only interest me anymore because of their open world environments, simulation and so on.

It was fun to load up Google maps and drop a pin in the location I was and see it was perfectly recreated. If there was a furniture shop in real life there was a furniture shop in game. It was impressive

Presuming that I'd like FE if I enjoyed something like FF Tactics?
Sod it, I've set up an alert on HUKD and will grab it if it drops to a reasonable price. £40+ for a 3 year old game!

Fire Emblem is quite a bit different from FFT. Which isn't to say that you won't like it, but they scratch fairly different itches for me.

It took me three years to finish a 5-hour game, but I finally completed Football Drama (PC).
The beginning of the game is quite funny, but it gets very repetitive. For example, the press conference after the game is exactly the same for 17 of the 18 games. The 'tactics' part, where you play out the games (18 games over the season) is nice, but I could never tell if anything I was doing made any difference. I did win the championship, but whether that was scripted or not, I don't know.
I also finished Gloomhaven a few days ago. At least, the main questline - there was a secondary questline which I believe hinged on your town's prosperity, and I don't think I got it high enough so no more quests are popping up for that questline. I could stay on the map and re-do completed quests to get the prosperity up, but I'd rather start again at a higher difficulty later in the year.
I have to say, nothing has obsessed me like this since Slay the Spire. What a phenomenal game. If you like tactics, you should play it asap.
