The Expanse Telltale game
More interactive story than game but thoroughly enjoyed this. I’m a huge fan of the tv show, and particularly Drummer, so this was always likely to scratch an itch.
Not particularly long at around 6 hours, but they were 6 hours very well used.
If you’re a fan of The Expanse then you’ll like this for sure, still enjoyable for a newcomer but probably not as much without the prior investment.

I need to give that another go. Tried it after reading the books and it didn't click straight away, but I've watched the first season of the show since then so in the mood for dipping back in.

A Plague Tale: Innocence (PS4 version on PS5 via PS4 Remote Play)
This reminded me of RE4 mixed with Last Of Us. Don't expect combat heavy, this is really a sneak-em-up. I enjoyed it though, albeit is very linear. Finished in 20 hours on the nose, I'm an explore nook and cranny gamer.

Quite an achievement for a single creator. Short, shallow but enjoyable.

Silent Hill : The Short Message - 4/10
This free game is essentially PT with a more blunt force approach to storytelling. As a teenage girl you are looking for your friend in an abandoned apartment complex. Think the storytelling was let down by characters not being able to just let you take in the atmosphere by yourself, the protaganist is also commenting on something. Felt like turning a corner would always have them say something. It's all centered around a pretty serious subject but tells it so bluntly it doesn't make for a great story. Plus the game really really wants to let you know that suicide isn't cool and yet at the same time you'll find notes and newspaper reports that describes it as also kinda cool and beautiful. It's about as subtle as a nuclear bomb. 2 hrs of slow walking and annoying chase sequences to complete. It was just ok so which by default makes it the best Silent Hill game in years

Right, so that's Boltgun finished for the third time. I wanted to clear it on the highest difficulty level (Exterminatus), so that's done.
If you have finished it on Hard difficulty, or even on Normal, you might as well give it a try. It's not that different. It does increase enemy health, but is pretty smart about it: the increase is absolutely minimal, so enemies never feel like damage sponges, but often the extra health is exactly just enough to throw off your tactics - for example, in Hard mode you can hit a Chaos Marine with three Vengeance rounds and he'll die, so you get used to that. In Exterminatus difficulty he's left with a small sliver of health, meaning you need to either waste a fourth Vengeance round, or switch to the Boltgun for a couple quick shots. Or try a different approach altogether.
Other than that, enemies hit a little harder and seem to aim better. Also there's more of them. So that's more cannon fodder. Nice.

Aliens dark descent.
Excellent game. The auto save was sometimes too far apart and the only other way to save was use a tool kit but that was a pretty important resource for other tasks.
I guess the best way to describe it is a real time xcom. You have the basic base functions to upgrade your squad, unlock abilities etc between missions. There is a basic cover mechanic, covering fire etc like xcom but everything is real time. You can pause it to give specific orders, like use a flame thrower at a certain point or weld a door shut.
It absolutely nails the vibe of the aliens movie and I thought the campaign was great. Half decent story that fits in the universe and a pretty decent mission variety.
Difficulty was about spot on but I did reload lots. If you lose a marine things can get bad quick but you can evac mid mission and bring a fresh squad in if people are injured or running low on supplies. Marines and also be captured and you go rescue them.
Anyway I highly recommend it if you like strategy lite and aliens.
Solid 8.

Electric Highways, another really small game off of itch.io. It's just a series of primitive looking maps with electronic music running. Decent variety both visually and in terms of music. But it is what it is, so it's very limited. The story is essentially about alienation, but it's a light touch.

A Plague Tale: Innocence
This grabbed me by the jaffers and didn't let go. Just blitzed it over the course if a week and loved every second. Got the sequel installed now but I'll give it a couple of days before starting it. It's a fucking brilliant game and I cannot believe I haven't played it before now. Properly gutted about the fate of one or two characters and I loved the main two. You really end up rooting for them both. Looks and runs beautifully as well, and it just ticked all the right boxes for me.
I was warned about a potential difficulty spike towards the end but I'm wondering if it was perhaps patched as I didn't have any issues with it. Think I died the first time then got through it without too much fuss. The final boss fight was a bit silly and reminded me I'm playing a video game but on the whole I can't really say I found much wrong with it.

I enjoyed it so much I bought the company...well the soundtrack at any rate!

I might not even last a couple of days tbh. I can see myself firing it up tonight.
Been listening to the soundtracks for both as they are on Amazon Unlimited. They're excellent.
Can't wait to see the stuff they do with the rats in the second one. They were so fucking cool in the first game and technically very impressive. Hundreds of beady red eyes glowing in the dark and the way they swarmed about the place. Nuts.
I'm aware I'm fawning over this but...yeah. Who cares. It's great.

Great climbing mechanics, strong distinct graphical style and a mystical, eco beats storyline that you un piece as you progress. Also an extremely cute pet!

Both compelling and at times frustrating… loved the heavily stylised sci-fi invasion/apocalypse story and Limbo-esque gameplay. Very much stayed for the story and nearly left a few times due to tricky controls and progress spikes.
6/10 but will remember it…

The Citadel (PC)
Another boomer shooter, more akin to Marathon with anime art. The guns feel quite good, so that's a plus for sure. I like the soundtrack too. Problems however include the level design and environment which are almost always the same, the difficulty level (easy is way too easy, while normal is very tough... I completed it on easy in the end), the horrendous translation (though the story arguably doesn't count for much anyway), and a plenty of crashing to desktop throughout. Given that the game only saves at the beginning of each level, it's annoying, although the levels themselves are pretty short overall.
In the end, I had fun with it, but it could have been so much better.
6/10
Next boomer shooter... I must choose between Turbo Overkill or Prodeus, or maybe i could restart Dusk (I left it at the end of the first episode, but I heard it gets much better from the second episode onwards).

The levels are indeed pretty bland with little variety in aesthetics and I think it wasn't too much better when it comes to level architecture.
I accidentally went with Easy I think, because the way the different paths were labelled was a bit unclear. And yeah, it's probably too easy on that difficulty.

During the weekend I finished Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order and am currently sweeping up collectables and achievements.
High production values on display, some great set pieces, an interesting story and character arcs, the sense of wonder and awe expected from the Star Wars universe, lovely music, all consist a really accomplished single player game from the least expected publisher. Only real nuisance was the almost useless map.
Cannot wait to dive into the sequel.

There's something special about this game but it has far, far too much padding (especially near the end) to be considered a classic.
Some of the conversations on the way to the Everdoor and saying goodbye to certain characters actually had me in tears.
Incredible moments in a game surrounded by too much busywork.

Nice. Given our similar tastes, I'm not surprised you enjoyed it - I rinsed it too. A lot of fun. I've not played the sequel, but I've been keeping my eye on it, convinced it's coming to GP at some point.

Yeah, it could've been a modern classic imo but they just didn't respect the players' time enough. Utterly pointless padding when it could've been a smashing 8-10 hour game.

I'm finished with my second playthrough of Alpha Protocol after about 15 hours. I didn't remember that much about my first playthrough, but towards the end of this one it definitely started to feel like things were significantly different here and there. I think my not very positive impressions early on at least partially are due to the structure of the game that needs a good amount of time to establish some factions and character relationships, before the reactivity starts showing up.
It mostly ended the same and the bossfights also were the same, but I let a certain person die this time while cooperating with another one I had gotten friendly with. I'm also pretty sure that I didn't get the offer to cooperate with the big bad last time. The main "handler" of the player did turn out to be a bit of a weakness though as there is simply nobody to replace her, so even if she supposedly "hates" the player, the game does only occasionally respond to it. For instance, at a few points she suggested a course of action but did remark that I wasn't going to listen to her anyway. The relationship was also just not as warm and there is definitely a lot of dialogue that I didn't get this time around.
The attempt to just go with the aggressive dialogue options all of the time didn't really work and I eventually did give up on it. A lot of the time it did seem appropriate, but often when talking to friendly characters it just resulted in insulting them for no reason and it was generally a bit unpredictable what "aggressive" really means in any given dialogue.
On the gameplay side I basically just gunned down most people I encountered with my shotgun as my build was basically just that plus tankiness. Which is part of why my handler hated me. My character was completely and uttler incompetent at stealth.

Red Dead Redemption 2 - 76 hours
Really liked this. So much so, I'm thinking of going straight in with a re-play through with the prequel/sequel and continue the story. Been so long I played it I can't remember what happened. Really brought into the story, like I havn't done with with a game and set of characters in a long time. Which is useful really because the game does have some limitations. Like any open world game - it's up to you to engage with the side stuff and after 20-30 hours I didn't really feel the need to do that much other that side stories. It's all there if you want to do it, but after so many open world games it's hard to be incenstivised to do so. So I mainlined the story, which works as it keeps up a good pace, but it does highlight how one dimensional the mission design is, even if it still fun going in and shooting things up. The Epilogue had some neat variety though, it just allowed it self to be less serious and have some fun.
But I didn't care too much. Its a beautifully crafted game (Even though it came at the expense of some well publicised crunch), and few games come to matching the attention to detail, polish and finesse this game achieves - perhaps only The Last of Us 2. It still looks stunning. It's a stunner. Secondly, even now, there are few big games that are brave as this when it comes to its systems and interactive design. It seems daunting at first, having contextualised inputs, but it really immerse's you in the game world. After a while it all becomes second nature too.
So yeah! might give it a week's break but I might go straight in with a play through of the first game to carry on
4.5 yeeha's out of 5

A Plague Tale Innocence (PS5)
Seems a few of us here have been playing and finishing this one recently and I have nothing more to say other than that I agree with every comment made about this game.
The cart? Definitely helps to have upgraded the sling.
Playing the second one tomorrow! So looking forward to that. Bah why have a left it this long to play these games.

Ghost of Tsushima, Directors cutAfter the disappointment of abandoning FF7 remake at the last chapter! (I just could not be bothered) I am back on track with the completion of the sublime and epic GOT. I enjoyed and enjoy everything in this game be it story, characters (Jin and Yuna are great) world, soundtrack etc. You can see that so much love has been poured into this game. The cut scene (and actually all cut scenes) and atmosphere leading into the final showdown is a thing of beauty, everything is perfect with it. Clocked 48 hours so far, which is 7 less than I spent on the ps4 version back when that released, but I have lots still to do and of course the story content dlc, so tens of hours to still enjoy. Once again PlayStation "nail" a sp campaign. Has to be one of my fav ps4/5 console exclusives. NitrousGreat to hear love for APT, as you say a few of you are enjoying, wait to you play 2 it ramps everything up and once again I will say that Amicia is such a great character, the actress should have got game awards for her portrayal.
