Is there any consensus on whether Dead Island 2 is going to be good or shit? If it ends up being a solid 7/10 I'll be happy to dive in and 'not open world' has me more interested than I'd expected to be.

I know you should really do it with everything, but that game especially screams "wait for reviews"

It's not open world? Wasn't the first open world?

Yeah. I gave up on that about 8 years ago and it doesn't seem to have much buzz about it.

It's not open world? Wasn't the first open world? No it was split up into smaller open world like segments. The hotel and beaches, The city, the jungle were the main three. Then you had stuff like the lab, The sewers etc. Is the new one following suit?

A YouTube preview suggests it's fairly linear, and I'm OK with that. It could also easily be repetitive and dull and control like a bag'o'shite. Time will tell!
It does look like a game destined to be half price or better within 6 months.

Is AB still a big deal?
Pretty big for SEGA to be splashing that type of money now days.

Is AB still a big deal? Pretty big for SEGA to be splashing that type of money now days. Rovio is doing OK for itself, but it feels like they are mostly still banking on the continued popularity of Angry Birds 2, which was released 8 years ago. Their spinoffs since, except maybe for Dream Blast, haven't really managed to light up the charts. Which makes me think the IP itself isn't really that important anymore. And in a world where Zynga is somehow valued at 12 billion dollars, just one billion means Sega doesn't think all that much of Rovio. I think Sega here is simply looking to get themselves a developer with expertise in the mobile F2P market. The Angry Birds IP might be just a bonus.

Then again need isn't really the issue!

chug666 Yeah I'e got to be honest I really fancy it regardless. I'm not really expecting anything more than a solid 7 or 8/10 experience but I still find even that incredibly satisfying. That said I'm definitely holding off on it just now just because I have too many games I want to get through first (literally 5000 indie horror games all installed on my PS5) and I don't actually have the itch to get it, even if it reviews well. Too many games, not enough time, means I'm happy to pop it on the list for later in the year.
Re: The linearity - So, yeah, looks like it's divvied up into little areas each wtih bits to explore but ultimately a linear path through. A bit like Bioshock someone said in the comments, which probably sounds about right. I don't mind that at all tbh. Not everything has to be a big open world and if anything, I'm fucking sick of big open worlds. Nice little well designed areas each with their own identitiy with thought behind each component appeals to me.

The review embargo for Dead Island 2 is apparently up today, c. 15:00 in the UK.
I think this one will go over surprisingly well (although I predicted the same thing about Forspoken, so obviously I know sweet f.a.).

I've just had a birthday and have some PSN credit burning a hole in my virtual pocket- I can easily see myself diving straight in if the review consensus is positive! Good news on the early embargo, will wait and see...

Heh, was going to bet that it'll be 70ish on metacritic and no score on EG

Had a 7/10 all over it really didn't it. It was never going to be the second coming. I admire the fact it eventually got out the door though. Genuinely didn't think we'd ever see it.
It actually looks better than Dying Light 2 though.

It could have been amazing..(original series)
I still have no idea how Dice failed not once but twice to make a game close to the originals.

Wasn't the original third one being developed by the TimeSplitters team? It could have been amazing, but they didn't have any hand in the first two.

Remnant II has piqued my interest somewhat, but I never played the original - anyone know whether it's any good? (Paging wunty to the thread!)

Remnant wasn't bad at all actually. I never played it again after finishing and a few of the boss fights were fucking brutal, but it was one of those games that came out and everyone went "woah, this is actually really fucking good". In my opinion it was never that good, but was worth a playthrough anyway. I liked how it seemed to have an AI director of sorts, and that the bosses were picked from a pool as opposed to being the same every playthrough, so there was replayability there.
tl;dr It's worth a gander if you see it cheap. It plays well, has a few interesting ideas and is mechanically solid.

Cheers, Wunty - much appreciated.
Did you ever play Immortal: Unchained? (That's the only other 'Souls with guns' game out there, insofar as I know, so I was wondering how it stacked up against Remnant.)

I did yes. Played it for a few hours but was a bit too janky. It's not alone mind you. Dolmen exists, and I've played a few hours of that as well. It's not actually awful.
Remnant is ten times better than Immortal btw. But it's different as well. I don't even know if I would strictly call it a souls-like despite sharing some geneology. it suffers from precdurally generated levels as well, which I don't like too much in these games. A good souls-like will have meticulously craftled levels.

Thanks again, Wunty. I'm not sure how Dolmen had escaped my notice 'til now, but I'll be sure to give it a look. Despite my unabashed adoration of the Soulsborne games, I've never played a Soulslike, and Remnant struck me as being a cool twist on the formula; besides, after 100+ hours of whacking enemies with swords in The Witcher 3, I'm itching to shoot something again! (For the benefit of any law enforcement agents who may be reading, I'm eager to shoot something *in a video game*, not real life. Just to be clear.)

I don't know that I've simultaneously loved and hated a game as much as I do Valheim. So rewarding and yet at times utterly infuriating.
I've just signed up for Game Pass Friends and Family now my other subscription ran out so hopefully I can get my son on board to help out. That said, he's seen me spitting and frothing at the game, so I'm not sure he's totally sold on it.

It actually looks better than Dying Light 2 though. The "Buy" in the headline for ACG's review seems to suggest that he liked it.
The Game Star reviewer was enthusiastic about the detail in the environments and the apparently rather good lighting as well as the gore. Also surprisingly good character writing according to him.
Not so sold on the damage and resistance mechanics and apparently there is often a lack of satisfying impact, partially because of that. Seems if you use any kind of elemental damage add-on or so, immune enemey tpes will simply take no damage at all anymore.
Edit: But yeah, from what I have heard of other reviews it's very mixed.

For the first time in years I have used up an EA access 10hr trial and now got to buy a PGA Tour, glad the character stats and currency gets shared between platforms but I got a decision to make over what to buy it for.
