Having jumped straight from a play through of Alan Wake Remastered (to remind myself what it was all about, 13 years is a long time!) into Alan Wake 2, I also am in the camp of 'not enjoying it'. I do like the atmosphere and on Series X it is absolutely stunning, but the core gameplay loop just leaves me feeling cold. To the extent I end up putting the pad down and doing other stuff instead.

Someone really liked Peacekeeper's title sequence eh? C'mon don't be a sourpuss. I really enjoyed this section. I suppose somebody at Remedy did: I’ve never seen it.

There seems to be a consensus between many people here that while the game is good, it ultimately has a lot of flaws and is disspoainting in some areas.
I don't see how it got universally praised across the board. Respect to Eurogamer for being one of the only media outlets to give it an average score. ACG also said the game was lacking, I knew I should of trusted him as he is normally right on the money.

I think it's a little like Control, in that if you have interest in the lore, then there's a lot to get out of it. I found Control to be lacking, as I wasn't that interested in the lore, but I find myself more than happy walking around in AW2 picking up, and reading/listening to everything. I suppose again it's because I'm a Twin Peaks fan, as it hits so many notes from the series.

I don’t really give a shit about the lore tbh but I found all the telekinesis/bullet time/that sort of thing really fun in Control and Quantum Break and Max Payne. In other words the gamey bits.
Whereas in this that side of things is quite shit.

I think I didn't get on with Control for the same reason (being a Twin Peaks fan). Just seemed like a poor facsimile.

I thought the gameplay in Control was fucking brilliant. Flying around lobbing desks at people. The combat in this is, in all honesty, utter horseshit.

It’s turning into one of the most conflicted opinions I’ve ever had on a game. I love it and hate it in equal measure.

It really is an excellent atmospheric horror themed walking simulator. I don't mean that prejoratively. I haven't played a game that affected me this much since alien isolation. The story is engaging.
Everything else about it ranges from ok to meh. Especially, as kal says, the "gamey" bits.

Yeah I agree. Atmosphere and all that is great.
It’s clearly a game you have to approach with a bit of good will. If you enjoyed the first, like the world and lore, and don’t mind walking sims and such, you’ll like it.
But I think you kind of have to want to like it.

Feels like a step back, it's visually very kinetic and punchy but the player character feels waaay too sluggish compared to the enemies they are facing.

It has moments where the combat almost feels like a proper gen 1 survival horror like Alone in the Dark or something. It’s that clunky.

I must say they definitely had good progression on abilities from Quantum Break to Control. You feel very powerful. The personal weapon also headshots like a beast.
I'm still looking forward to AW2 because I loved the world, and I like how it sounds quite different. Having just played QB and Control I won't necessarily be needing more of the same.

I think my ideal game from this developer would be something with Control's combat, but 20% less combat and 20% more ambient horror.

With Control I enjoyed the combat, where here I can handle like 2-3 enemies, but any more and it becomes an ordeal. Like 3 wolves at once involves a couple tries from me, can’t hit them unless I stun them first. Also when enemies get close and grab me, I get out but the camera has panned any which way except where I want it.
Did the riddle in the shipyard on the way back from the old folks home, had to leg it because it spawns 5 enemies and my flashlight had ran out. Like in Control I felt like I could do some side missions and upgrade my way out of problems.

Best place to ask the question. I've started on Alan Wake Remastered this week and have bought Alan Wake 2 to play right after. But I also have Control which I shelved after a couple of hours years ago. As spoiler free as possible; how necessary is it to play Control before AW 2 in order to get the full Remedy Universe experience? I don't mind doing that if it makes the overall experience better but also wouldn't mind getting onto AW 2 as soon as I can.

Not essential but there are a lot of links in aw2 to control.

The AWE DLC is very connected to events in Alan Wake and hints towards Alan Wake 2. The base game has some nods, but those are more Easter eggs than anything substantial. From what I've played of AW2 so far, it is clearly set in the same world as Control and even has a character from Control pop up. Doesn't seem essential to have played the game, but nice to have that continuity.

Does the game keep doing those black and white jump scares throughout the entire game as I think they've really overdone in this Saga section I'm currently doing.

I'm feeling quite mixed about this game, it's got great atmosphere but the combat doesn't feel fit for purpose especially when it comes to the bosses. I've just done one that felt absolutely unfair when you factor how much damage they took, how slow you move, how many attacks they threw and the amount of post processing filling the screen which made it really difficult to see what the actual fuck was going on.

I think I'd had enough frustrations with the combat and had already turned it down to story mode by that point, so just unloaded a shotgun into it.
Boss fights are universally shit in this, which made me laugh when shillup lauded it for having great boss fights. Were we playing the same game?

Someone has hacked together the video files from that section from Alan's part. Pretty interesting to watch without any gameplay.

Yeah I kind of appreciate this is more of a walking simulator, as fuck having to constantly kill these enemies. When you had to kill those two bosses, I was running out of ammo.. trying to reload the crossbow, and having a good smack in the face.
