I’m more worried that Taco Bell is listed as a plus. It’s horrendous. Crunchwrap Supreme tries to say otherwise

Like I said elsewhere I would 100% try that Cheezit thing they’re doing right now.

I’ve never seen any of these movies.
A particularly annoying twat I knew told me I’d love them, and people who actually knew me better all told me I’d hate them.
Hmmm…

I’ve never seen any Seinfeld either - not even a clip.

Man, Seinfeld is the greatest sitcom of all time. Curb Your Enthusiasm is great too, but you don't get Curb without Seinfeld first.
Kevin Smith films are harder to recommend if you didn't grow up watching them. They're very of their time, and even Smith himself will tell you that he wrote his life, so by Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back, he made a movie about making movies.

Did you watch and like Bill and Ted?
I'd imagine watching some ViewAskew movies now would be a bit like watching a Bill and Ted movie for the first time now.

Yeah I don’t know where these would be without the nostalgia factor for me. I think I’m one of the few who really enjoyed the Reboot movie, but it was mostly down to it being an affectionate tribute to films I enjoyed as a teenager rather than it standing up on its own.

Weird how none of the films seem to be on any streaming services, and Dogma isn't even available to rent...

I think, with a few exceptions, this issue is probably the case for most films. Especially if you're affected more by the cultural shifts and changes to special effects that date most films. I still find some joy in films like Clerks because a) i am hopelessly stuck in the past, and b) I've always been a fan of what my wife calls 'those films where its just people talking lots' (using the same tone as some people use to talk about 'walking simulators'). But its true, and I think its harder to find films like that now, so I do continue to go back to Kevin Smith, and films with John Cusack and Ethan Hawkesbury in them.

I haven't seen one of his films in a long time, but the thread reminded me that I used to buy the Jay and Silent Bob comics.

I dunno, I think there's something about Smith's films that are particularly of their time. That style of slacker/nerd pop culture comedy was very fresh and funny back then. Show a modern 16yo the Death Star workers scene in Clerks now and they probably wouldn't find it that funny because that sort of discourse pops up all over the place. Meanwhile I'd say you can whack on something like E.T. from a decade prior and, fashion aside, it could almost have been made yesterday. That's not a slam against Smith; I like him. I just think his early stuff especially is very 90s.

I dont particularly disagree, but I do think it's something most old films deal with in some form or another, even stuff that could be regarded as classics of the era. Someone I spoke to a while back decided to try out Back to the Future and said it was boring. I think the general pace of editing alone can account for most issues with those hip youngsters watching these relics of the past. They (shakes fist) dont even have intros to their songs.
Anyway, you're right. I guess Smiths films are particularly laden with pop culture references adjacent to itself, resulting in being less meaningful to each subsequent generation, magnified by each touchstone.
I would say I'll see how my daughter fares with it when she gets old enough for such things and report back in a decade, but the thought of sitting through some of those scenes with my child is making my skin itch.

Honestly…I’m not that fussed about them either. Due to my appearance (i.e. what I actually look like) and my membership of various bands over the years, everyone assumes I’ll be into Bill and Ted, Wayne’s World, and Beavis and Butthead. I’m not really into any of them. Spiñal Tap, on the other hand…

The characteristics of Smith’s earlier films are not characteristics of everyday culture. Not even pop culture. Tearing things down in an irreverent way. Hell, that’s modern politics

I can't really fault Smith's dialogue all that much. It's a little strained and unrealistic, but I've caught myself Smithing out from time to time. I think it's probably his biggest strength if he wasn't so whizzed out when he wrote it. A dab of speed in the editing booth isn't always the ticket.

The Ed O'Neil character in the Wayne's World films is amazing.
And I pity the man who doesn't have the Del Preston sweetshop story committed to memory word for word.

I saw the trailer and I'm mildly interested. Like it's been mentioned in here, it's a bit of nostalgia growing up watching these. I don't really have an urge to re-watch all his films. I think we may have watched Mallrats a few years back.. and it still had a certain charm, but to me Jay and Silent Bob comedy isn't my sort of thing today.

I just reminded myself that I read Chasing Dogma as a teen, and there's one scene where Tricia is showering.. and Jay tries to grope her. Good old Kevin Smith eh.

I liked the in-jokes, like about how Dante was originally supposed to be killed by a robber at the end of Clerks 1.

Fairly sure my Clerks X dvd had the original ending and it ran with that until Miramax yanked it right out of there

Fairly sure my Clerks X dvd had the original ending and it ran with that until Miramax yanked it right out of there I had a special edition DVD that included an alternate cut with the robbery ending, but that was never included in an "official" version. There's a story where somebody persuaded him not to kill Dante, that he was just being edgy because he thought indie films needed to have dark endings.

I finally watched the Clerks 3 trailer and I’m into it
After so much sci-fi and so many MCU blockbusters I think I’m ready for some low key heartfelt nostalgia
In the mood for something talkie in general actually, a Clerks, Singles, maybe an Empire Records at a push but its a bit more uptempo. Open for recommendations if you’ve got ‘em. Ideally on Netflix or D+

I definitely into it. Clerks II wasn't bad at all imo. I partook in a Q&A with Brian O'Halloran at a comic con a few years back where he was less than sure III would happen, as Jeff Anderson couldn't be convinced. Amazing what can happen when you need cash. He was also a grumpy egotist but turned the charm on when the mic was on.
