Thanks for that. I didn't know you could that - it was something I really wanted to do but didn't know how.

Like most things in the games it isn't explained at all that you can do this. Like I've said earlier in this thread I love this game despite it doing so much in its power to make me not like it. It's so weird.

It's such a shit class, but even more so when you've just unlocked it and don't have any skills. Every fight ended up being me running away until my pawns had killed everything.
And yeah, it gets so much wrong and any other game I wouldn't be anywhere near as forgiving as I am. Someone else said something along the lines of it's the best 7/10 game they've played in ages, which sums it up perfectly.

The SkillUp review shares my thoughts on this game. A lot of it for me is the sense of exploration which many open world games fail to do well. I mean the story is absolute bobbins, which just falls off a cliff as soon as it gets started and some quests are just straight up broken as well being so obtuse with their vagueness. There's a crafting system that truthfully you don't really need, most good loot you buy rather than find in the world. BUT despite all this shit the game just shines through it's great combat and the experiences you have on the way to somewhere.

I found some lightning daggers for my thief out in the wild somewhere. They are pretty amazing.

A lot of it for me is the sense of exploration which many open world games fail to do well. More or less agree, but I find it to be more a series of interconnected corridors than a genuine open world, which has frustrated me a few times.

Yeah it's the exploration coupled with all the crazy shit that happens along the way. Every time I get somewhere it feels earned, with the towns and villages offering true respite from the dangers of the road.

I'm not saying it's not possible but most loot is from vendors. If it was me I'd put more loot in the world actually rewarding players for exploration, maybe add some enemy levelling which doesn't exist at present and maybe add a bit more enemy variety while at the same time reducing enemy encounters.

Finally started this on the weekend. Haven't gotten too far into it (just about to leave Melve with Gregor) but it already feels like meeting an old friend after a long time apart. Everything's slowly coming back to me despite not playing the game for over ten years. I love the sense of place - I'm not sure if it's the desaturated colour palette what does it but the lack of sheen makes the world feel much more real and lived in. First game nailed this too. Can't wait to get more time into it, just not sure when that'll be Stupid real life commitments!

I do see what you mean where the paths on the map are actually the corridors and it doesn't have the topography of something like Skyrim which allow true exploration.

It's just got so much personality. Personality goes a long way. - Oh, you're a villain, all right — just not a "super" one. - Oh, yeah? Well, what's the difference? - PRESENTATION!

Every time I get somewhere it feels earned, with the towns and villages offering true respite from the dangers of the road. Yeah, earn is the right way to put it. Often games are completely frictionless in how you navigate the world. Sometimes that works thematically (spiderman) but for something like this, getting from a to b needs to be challenging. That trek from Vernworth to Battahl, or finding a route through the caves to the volcanic island, genuinely felt difficult, I wasnt sure I was going the right way, it was so much more atmospheric and satisfying because of that. I'm not sure anything other than Death Stranding has managed it so well.

Death Stranding is a really good point of reference when it comes to navigating your way from place to place.

I think Skyrim definitely meets that criteria and I think that's one of the many big reasons amongst many of their reasons as to why Starfield has fallen flat for many people because Bethesda seemed to have forgotten it's all about the journey as well as forgetting to mLw the destination not just a copy and pasted moon base.

I think I’m close to completing the main quest. I’ve just got the newly created godsway and been told to head to moonglint tower. I get the impression that’s getting towards the end end game. Which is kind of odd as I’ve not really explored much of battahl at all. That really is the weakest part of the game. The main quests are so clunky and the story is just a bit rubbish. They really should have made the main quest send you to all corners of the map rather just being in and around the cities. So I guess I’ll just mess around in battahl for a while before pushing on.

Yeah it’s rubbish. You’ve pretty much got to just go and do your own thing, which is what I’m doing. Looking for the bloody sphinx again. Keep finding stuff though. The map is great to explore. Just as well. As you say, the main story sure as hell doesn’t want you to explore it!

Right. After more crazed adventuring I have camped in western Battahl, just at the southern cusp of a black section of map that, when I zoom in, contains quite a long path north. So that's where I'm exploring next. Will it lead me to the sphinx? Who knows!
In other news between a late session last night and my quick early session this morning, me and the gang downed two dragons, which was nice. They are still bloody hard though.
Oh, anyone know where one can come by black crystal? I need it for upgrading.

I got one black crystal (i think) in the under sea thing. It's still not enough to level up my pawns magic gear. I have also not found this sphinx yet, but western battahl is also a mystery to me. That's my next area for poking around in. I maxed thief, so am now off trying magic archer out. I did change to trickster, just to get the achievement, but then went right back to something else.

I think that must be where I found one. As I have one, but I need another to upgrade my bow.
Hmmmm. There must be somewhere I haven't been / something I haven't killed. I wonder if that creepy headless fucker has one. Or the medusa. Or where the sphinx is hiding.
Shit. Still so much to look for.

I DID however find another griffin nest with a portcrystal. I also now have a pawn that can speak elvish. Fuck. That means I should go back up there as well. I've unfogged the map around rivendell but haven't actually had a proper look around.
Argh. Too much.

Google suggests that you may be able to find some in Waterfall Cave after defeating a big nasty. Alternatively, there is a traveling merchant who frequents the ancient battleground who may have a few for sale.

Ironically, being a thief, it was the first thing I tried! Was expecting to be able to do it afterwards, but no. Sounds like a decent farming opportunity at least.

Play as the Warfarer, put her to sleep using Mystic Archer, swap over to a bladed melee weapon and chop her head off with a single quick attack. Instawin.
