How do the digital versions of Alien stack up? I have the Blu-Rays, which are starting to show their age a bit last time I watched.

Alien looks amazing in 4K. Coming to Disney+ soon.

Yes the Alien 4K disc is one of the best out. It both the theatrical and directors cuts in 4K.
The level of detail increase is amazing, it's like watching the film again. Particularly in Alien, where there's lots of litter and items strewn everywhere, you can see it all much more clearly. Like you can see the "Aspen" beer cans in the mess hall and in engineering clearly, and you can almost read the post it notes attached to the instrument panels on the bridge.
I fucking love the Alien 4K, it's my fav movie anyway, but anyone buying a 4K TV for the first time, that's the disc I advise them to get first.

I've not bought any 4K disks yet, as digital is so much cheaper when on offer through Apple. I know there's a resolution and sound cost to that but it's worth it to my dulled ears and eyes. £25 just seems too steep for films I'll watch maybe once a year or two.

What I did is go to HMV, they have twofers offers on all the time. Also eBay, put in some low bids and see what you win. I've got quite a few 4Ks for £7 or less this way, just recently The Bourne Supremacy and XMEN Days of Future Past, but also Lego Batman and Darkest Hour and loads more. The picture and sound quality boosts are well worth it on the OLED, imo. And it's nice to own physical boxsets of things like LotR, Batman, Aliens, Ghostbusters etc.

Yeah, I keep an eye out on eBay for stuff. I prefer physical copies but storing them is a pain in the arse. At the moment, hard media goes into case wallets and the boxes in the loft.

I just ripped all of my library to massive MKVs and stripped any unnecessary languages/subs from them. The discs all live in the loft now along with the two 4K discs that I got before I decided that this physical collection stuff had to end.
Blade Runner final cut and 2049 looked pretty damn good mind you. I might have to dig them out of the loft for another rewatch.

Would love to set up a NAS etc but just cannot be arsed. Plus, the kids use DVDs (like, proper DVDs) all the time for car journeys, so having them to hand is helpful.

I used to have massive Billy bookcases lining the walls of our front room, stuffed to overflowing with discs. The missus, after years and years, finally persuaded me to get rid of them, along with the bulk* of my collection. So now I've got w hat's left stored in tidy Ikea boxes, but obviously that's far from ideal.
Don't know why I never thought to take the discs out of the boxes and store them in wallets to save space. Might have a crack at doing that, it'll make life a lot easier.
*I say "bulk", maybe it was half of the 400-500 discs I had. I've got two or three boxes full stored in my parents' loft, more in my own loft. It was mostly old DVDs that I had to concede I was probably never going to watch, or that I wanted to buy again anyway on BD or in 4K.

Yeah, I just got rid of all of my DVDs in one job lot as I knew I'd never watch them when there's a FHD alternative (apart from a couple of steelbooks/ones I had a nightmare sourcing). That was the main thing that made me take pause and not jump on the 4K bandwagon. As nice as it looks, I knew I'd just end up doing the same thing all over again at great expense.
Plus regular blurays still look absolutely fine to me.

Yes, I've only bought new things on 4K or double dipped when a) the existing bluray was absolutely fucking shit (Tremors, Big Lebowski) or b) it was so cheap I couldn't argue (I've picked up 4K discs for £3-4 off Music Magpie, but you have to be quick).
The only thing I've ever paid full price for, ie £25, was Tenet on day of release and I saw it on the shelf and thought fuck it.

I've just got round to getting rid of a bunch of blu-rays that I never watched anymore. A few Arrow releases and steelbooks. Probably should have checked on Ebay but I couldn't be arsed with the hassle. CEX gave me a 'fair' price and I got a few games for my retro collection.

I'm quite a film buff tho. I'm also still in a Honeymoon period with my CX. Watching new films on it still rocks my world. I enjoy looking at my 4K collection in my bookcase. It's also a more pleasurable experience to select a 4KBR to watch, than picking something from Netflix. I'll use Netflix and Disney+ if I already know what I'm going to watch on there, otherwise I'll be choosing for hours and getting frustrated that I can't pick anything.
In addition to the superior picture and sound quality vs streaming (which is more appreciable on high end equipment), I also like having the extras such as interviews and deleted scenes. And the tactile pleasure of actually having a 4K blu ray collection is exciting to me, in the same way that regular blu rays were when I first bought into those.
Owning and watching classic films in the new format is awesome too in higher resolution, such as Alien. And just like when blu rays were new, we're seeing a lot of remasters which are fairly revisionist in the presentation in lighting (The Hunt For Red October), colour (Apocalypse Now, The Revenant), grain/DNR (Predator, T2) and other things. As well as presenting brand new cuts, like the Apocalypse Now Final Cut.
I get the convenience of digital, and for games I've totally gone that way and it's been transformative not having to change discs and not losing discs or getting them scratched, saving shelf space and not being tempted to trade the game back in.
But I like having lots of physical film media. Always have.

Should have chucked them up here, may have been interested. Although giving them to the pube factory is definitely easier for you.

How do the digital versions of Alien stack up? I have the Blu-Rays, which are starting to show their age a bit last time I watched. Late but pretty good. It’s 3.99 on iTunes atm so I watched it last night, funnily enough.

The Alien Blu-ray still looks pretty good. I didn't think the 4K was that much of a jump in quality, more like a finesse.

Oof - could get expensive. A few Argento films I haven't seen since VHS in the early 90s...

I dunno about the rest but the first one has Sonny Chiba in it and kicks a decent amount of ass. Definitely worth three quid.

Some of the Arrow ones were Zardoz and Hell Comes To Frogtown so I'm pretty sure you wouldn't have bitten on those ha! I've got a massive stack of DVDs and blu-rays still as CEX would only offer 10p for each. Just posting all those as a job lot would be ££.

I heard this too this morning through a Reddit thread about his career high to career low. It was one of the first comments.
Wonder if it's true or just a rumour that has got out of hand.
Bruce is great. Die Hard, 12 Monkeys, Pulp Fiction, Armageddon, Fifth Element, Sixth Sense, Death Becomes Her, Looper etc etc

Kermode and Mayo's Radio 5 show to end, although they suggest it may continue elsewhere in some form.
I never bought into the fandom and it for be a little up itself, but two hours of movie discussion was something of a treasure. A bit of a loss for the BBC.
