I know it's cheeky to make feature requests on day 2, but any way the width can be responsive and work at any browser window size without horizontal scroll bars? That would be a "max-width: 1000px" on the wrapper div rather than a "width: 1000px" if that helps.
Oh and making the avatar pics smaller would tighten up the spacing a lot too.

Hmm maybe it's something in my settings? I still don't see it. Perhaps because I've switched off avatars?? Further experimentation is needed...
EDIT - Ok, so on further experimentation it's a me problem. Looks like Twitter embeds are being blocked by my work VPN/firewall- it doesn't do it on my phone. Panic over! I'll stop gumming up threads now...

They work for me, Imgur is just a bitch to link from in general though. You need to make sure you get the direct URL (ending in .jpg)
