I'm not reading any reviews but think we can all sorta sense that talk about the ending certainly suggests some major change. Which is what we should all expect after Remake and we all felt there was potential to get very messy. Guess only way to find out is to go through it. I am very intrigued personally lol

Pacing issues doesn't surprise me. It's basically FF's style these days. The ending talk will be so subjective I'm not really interested in people's opinions on it until I've seen it for myself.
At the minute I'm more concerned about the image quality. It still looks really blurry for a PS5 game. And it seems to have the same "occasional completely random spot of PS1 texture quality" issue that part 1 did on release. No idea what the hell is going on there!

UE4 is the big culprit I'd say. Part of the perils of having a big open world. People have pointed out image quality of the models etc looking much sharper when there isn't a lot of gemometry and foilage on screen, kinda shifts dynamically. Will be curious to see if a higher grade PC can just power through those problems to get a better image. One of those where you kinda do wish there was some PS5 Pro. All that to say, the game still looks pretty gorgeous

I’m willing to accept uneven graphics as they’re clearly using the same version of UE they did previously. Given all the problems they had starting up the project I don’t think that another overhaul and engine change would have been worth it.
I do hope they tune the performance mode a bit more though, and maybe look at rendering out text at a higher resolution. The blurry words contrasted with perfectly sharp controller icons in tutorial text was particularly noticeable.

I thought I better play Remake first and I’m on the difficult boss at end of chapter 7. (About 10 hours in) enjoying it mostly but Christ isn’t there a lot of padding?!

Yeah the padding in remake was pretty bad. I'm replaying it now, and I wish they kind of hadn't bothered with any of it, as it does nothing for me at all. But I guess that was always going to be the result of doing the 5-7 hour Midgar section as a full modern game.
I'm kind of curious how that split looks compared to this new game, which I feel like I'd seen is supposed to be the rest of the first disc of the original. Thats... a lot of stuff, and makes the split seem very lopsided (though dont ask me where I would have put the split if it were me... er... maybe after the Junon ship so you start game two at Costa Del Sol...
Anyway I'm adding this to my desperate to play now pile but will have to resist until its out on PC.

This could be a controversial opinion, but the padding in a lot of games these days seems to stem from journalists who banged on about game length. Now we have games which should be 20 hours of actual core story, but are now 50, with absolute tedious tasks, and fluff that doesn’t have any relevance to the story.

Hmmm, I'm not entirely sure about that it's entirely from journalists. Yes I remember the discourse around things like CoD in the 360 era having 6 hour campaigns and game journos talking about it but the paying public routinely discusses length in regards to price.

I imagine the motivations probably differ from game to game. Its probably hard to judge exactly, since players will have different tolerances for that sort of thing. After all, I guess all games have elements of repetition about them, and it becomes padding when we get that nebulous sense that it's 'gone too far'.
In Remake's case, my feeling is there needed to be some stuff to extend the story beats out from the original, but what was there was very dry/unexciting and focused on reusing the same areas, fighting similar fights and a lot of running around. It felt like it was there to extend time, and didn't really add anything beyond that. And it happened in-between most areas.
I'm also a bit of a curmugeon and even when they add fresh bits to the story that could be interesting (e.g. the trip up the plate with Jessie) they tend to be less engaging to me, or annoying (I really didn't like that biker Soldier) and leave me unsure what they're really adding to the story. But generally where they tweaked and expanded existing elements, it seems quite well done. I'm kind of hoping that, given the amount of existing content to get through in this second part, that they haven't really got the bandwidth to stuff in too much more jarring new stuff.

We're at a point where most seem to equate the cost of a game to how many hours it's gonna take to beat. Even things like replayability becomes less of a thing nowadays, think people would rather have a lenghty experience to then just never touch again. I've seen criticism of RE4 Remake because it's only 20 hrs or so, despite the fact that the game has additional difficulties, items, weapons etc to unlock plus Mercenaries mode. These were the games you'd happily replay back in the day. Think expectation now is that some padding is considered acceptable so long as there is enough game content to justify the price point.
Having said that, you could cut some chapters out of Remake quite easily. The little escapade looking for Wedge underground, going with Leslie in the sewers.

This is most folk I know. I wonder if it’s because they’re more intvested in a game’s narrative than the actual journey? Personally, I think replay value is way more important to me. I love replaying games. There’s something to say for replaying something and just doing a better job of it. Finding all the secrets, exploring optional paths or just generally being a more skilled player. Let alone all the optional extras that games like Resi offer; that make you over powered. In my eyes, a game is only truly a classic if it has replay value and the longer the game the less likely that is the case.

Mine too. Good timing, platinumed The Lost Crown completed two days ago (D dave - I hit a xerxes bug different to yours and was unable to get 100 per cent as a result!) and then completed the Rebirth demo yesterday so this is all very nice.

Oh wait shit, Tesco stopped doing physical games didn't they? That's been my go-to 24 hour midnight pickup place for ages.
Does this kind of thing even go on any more?

Got some 24 hour Asdas a few miles from me. Never used them for this though.
I'm definitely going to turn up to some blank stares and leave empty handed...

Waiting so long to play it that walking through Kalm village with the beautiful rendition of the Kalm music playing, made me stop for a bit. Actually kinda got me. Also I suck at this new card game, but it seems cool.
