Master System Wonderboy was awesome, worth it for that. The later one (Wonderboy III?) where you changed into the different animals was amazing Had forgotten Wonderboy, that was indeed awesome. Rock hard though. When games were proper games etc.

I've got a Pocket Neo-Geo, does that count? Fab form factor, great micro-switched controls, poor screen and catalogue of games.

The only failed console I actually owned during it's run was the Wii U, which of course doesn't meet the criteria of the thread but I'll take any opportunity to mention the Wii U and how much I loved it

Out of the consoles I now own, apparently the least successful are the 32X, Mega CD, Dreamcast and Saturn, in that order. Oh, Sega.

Great system, even if it didn't meet its potential and the gimmick ended up being underused. The fact so many of the Switch's biggest games are just updated Wii U games shows how good the games themselves were.

I’ll not hear a word against the Master System. I absolutely loved mine. Still got it too.
I preferred the sequel, Wonder Boy in Monster World, but Wonder Boy 3 was great. I bought the remake on PS4 when it came out for some cutesy nostalgia and got repeatedly owned by how unforgiving games used to be. Its a really nice remake with the option to switch between smooth hand drawn new art and the original sprites and you can do the same with the music. They’re separate options too so you can mix and match the audio and visuals.
The Alex Kidd in Miracle World remake was similar quality. I think it had options to skip the rock-paper-scissor bosses too but I might be wrong about that.

]It got a lot trickier with the Megadrive and SNES (so I had both) I owned both too, but not at the same time. I think we traded one for the other here and there. I spent ages perusing the magazines trying to figure out which system was the best for which game. Probably way more than actually playing the damn things.

Not 90s but I’ve still got a Nokia N-Gage somewhere
Bought it from someone at work for £20 with loads of games but I’ve never played it other than a quick test

I was too young to appreciate the Saturn when I had one - a 2D powerhouse of a console stuffed with great fighters, racers and shoot 'em ups sounds right up my street as an adult.

what were those games on a card thing the master system had They were just cheaper to make than carts and thus had a limited run of cheaper games on them. Ghost House was pretty good. I'm not sure the master system was a failed console, it was bigger than the nes in UK and Europe and had a long life in Brazil. It does have some real gems on it too.

Failure is a bit strong, but not sure it was a huge success. it sold less than the Wii U

Surely it's a console of the 80s too

I have fond memories of the Barcode Battler Haha I had this! Wasn’t it pretty much a digital top trumps? It’s come with some character cards already but you could create your own

Ugh, so many 90s kids who wanted a mega drive got fobbed off with a master system because it was cheaper and had sonic on the box.

Hmm apparently the Master System is in the same ball park as the DC and Saturn. I would have guessed it did a lot better than those

Actually I bet the difference is that it wasn’t the same financial failure as those two

Mate had a pc engine where we'd mainly play this racing game that was multiplayer on tbe same screen. It was good fun, but I don't remember playing anything else.
Think it was called moto roader, looking at the list of games

The Saturn was epic and I’m glad no one else had one. All the more Saturny goodness for me.
Oh you didn’t play Panzer Dragoon Saga? Too bad! It was the greatest story ever told and impossible to emulate. I’ve dined out on the celebrity I obtained from owning a PAL version of the game for years. All I need to do is mention the hidden Pandora’s Box section and Fannies start a wobbling.
Also we had a better version of Soviet Strike.

It’s come with some character cards already but you could create your own that's right, my brother and I had won one and I remember scanning any barcode we could get out hands on to get a better creature/character or whatever it was

The Jaguar controller was certainly something. Would have loved to have been in the design meetings.
“Hey I know. Let’s give it a keypad like a door entryway system that takes up most of the controller.”
“Yes, but let’s figure out why later. Hey, you know how fighting games are big right now? Let’s make it absolutely impossible to do a fireball with our D-Pad. Don’t want those games getting too easy for them now, do we?”
“Genius. And we all agree the SNES had it all wrong, right? Let’s use the same button layout as the mega drive. You know, the three button layout even they abandoned.”
“God damn this is good. Now let’s think about the CD add on. We’re going to want a slice of that sweet sweet Mega CD pie…”

Oh god, only a couple of games ended up using those keypads in the middle right?

They went cheap and just reused the pad from the ST, I guess a number pad made more sense on a personal computer

I had and loved both the CD32 and Lynx.
Had some cool stuff for them, including a cable kit that transformed the CD32 into a CD-ROM drive for my accelerated A1200.

I loved that game anyway, Shining Force 3 was epic too. I remember Sega Saturn magazine giving away the first disc of Saga on the cover. Sega were pretty desperate at that point.
