It's in the "Game Presets" options in "Saved Data and Game/App Settings"*, along with things like inverting Y by default etc, not all games pay any attention to what is set in there though, first party titles and more recent stuff tends to though.
*I'm sat in front of my PS5 right now, I don't have amazing memory or anything!

The game profile settings (like invert Y) was so damn useful on the 360 and then Microsoft forgot about it for the Xbox One, no idea why.

I'm not sure it counts as a 'mechanic', but Day 1 DLC can get in the fucking sea.
Two playable characters in Persona 5 Tactica being paywalled like this sours what has otherwise been a fun game so far.

Yoshizawa and Akechi. I think they get a separate story chapter as well.

Relatedly - needing a spreadsheet to workout which different launch editions give you which pieces of gated “bonus” content / value for money.

"tethered" co-op. I'm looking at you FC series. If you are going to allow me co-op then allow me to go where I want without restrictions.

Not a fan of open-world games cockblocking you by going, "Nuh-uh - no more main story content 'til you've done some side missions!" (Phantom Liberty, I'm looking at you here.)

Someone else, in cp77 thread I think, said that they like that you need to wait for things to happen with main story It gives you ingame incentive to do other stuff instead of spending weeks on side quests while main quest "we need to hurry up" just waits...

lukaszI don't mind having to wait a few in-game hours/days for someone to give you a call and advance a quest, but the part in Phantom Liberty where the game forces you to complete three gigs for Mr. Hands made me roll my eyes. The preceding mission was absolutely brilliant, so being forced to do 'optional' side content for half an hour felt like CDPR slamming on the brakes when I just wanted to go faster, if that makes any sense at all!

I think it's a pacing thing as it gives the impression of there being time passing between the main missions

I think I said that. I've certainly felt that way if it wasn't me who said it - it's the best way for a game to balance main quests and side quests imo.
And I get that it can be frustrating if you just want to plough on, but with CP2077 you can just wait a day using the time-wait-thingy and it will unlock. Even in PL, if you just "wait" or "sleep" for 24 hours it will advance.

Yeah, the time-skip feature is great for allowing the player to set his/her own pace, and it works 99% of the time... ... But it doesn't help me to avoid completing three gigs for Mr. Hands in order to progress Phantom Liberty It's by no means a major deal, and it won't have an adverse impact upon my enjoyment of the DLC, but this kind of thing always bugs me a little. Like, those gigs have been sitting in my quest log for ages, now - if I'd wanted to do them, I would've done so, game!

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 - It's got some great little mini games. You can play it 4 player. You can't create a tournament.
I never really played this when it came out, my son unlocked everything though and we tried some 4 player last weekend expecting to be able to setup multiple events, all voting on a couple, then playing through.
Had to use a pen and paper to keep track.

Gank boss fights in games that weren't designed for them.
You can't create a game where the objective with bosses is to learn their patterns, parry their attacks and whittle down their stamina for a big hit... Then dump two or three of them on me at once!
(Why yes, I did smash my head against The Tiger's Loyal Subjects (edit: Wo Long) on NG+ for like an hour last night until the cheese solution finally -barely- worked, why do you ask? And that was post-nerf??? Jesus wept...)

Game: press Enter to begin
*me pressing any other key* *game begins anyway*
But I'll admit, I'm so used to this, I kinda feel bad when the game doesn't start unless I actually press Enter.

When did Nintendo start using L + R for starting a game, rather than start/plus or A? At first it seemed pointlessly weird, but there’s something about it that I kinda gets you more alert or ready for a game than accidentally hitting a random button.

Or in the case of Psychonauts 1 on a modern console
‘Push Start to begin’ - Options doesn’t operate as a Start button, actually press the touchpad (and only the touchpad) instead

Pretty sure it's only been a thing this gen. I'm guessing it's to make sure both joycons are connected before you proceed, but yeah, I quite like it too.

Playing undocked or with the Pro controller I almost never see it... Or maybe I'm just not playing the right games, idk 😅

Speaking of which - in that same game the touchpad is also two different menu screens depending how you press it. This is not very helpful when things like the map, journal, inventory, options, objectives etc are all hidden back there.
Its still a very good game but its only a port or emulation not any kind of remaster so has developed some (more) idiosyncrasies in the translation from PS2 to contemporary hardware.

The corpse run, i.e. having to return to where you died to get your stuff back. That's garbage on its own already, but made even worse if it's lost if you die trying to get it back. Every game I've played that uses it is a worse game because of it. One of the most awful game mechanics in existence and I wish they'd stop doing this trash.
