Not really a game mechanic as such, but related, but launchers. Why does every fucking company want a launcher. I don't mind have a single list, like Steam, but then clicking play launches some motherfucker launcher. Just makes starting games tedious.

Shopkeepers/blacksmithes/level-up maidens/etc blathering the same shit every time you visit them, so you have to button-spam through the same "dialogue" literally hundreds of times. So fucking annoying.
There are so many ways this could be avoided, I think the best way would be to have two interact buttons, one for chatting and one for shopping/upgrading/whatever.
But it seems like developers don't even want to avoid it and the way it is is actually intended for some stupid reason. God, why?

But it seems like developers don't even want to avoid it and the way it is is actually intended for some stupid reason. God, why? Yeah, Fallout New Vegas had a similar problem with people constantly repeating their reactions to the player's questing. Especially annoying because their lines before many quests have been done are very limited in number. They also keep reacting while some dramatic story is happening. Makes them seem like Zombies at times.
And some games have narration that just starts repeating once it is finished. The Skein in Mask of the Betrayer had something like that. Nicely written and good voice-acting and then it just starts looping.
I don't get it. It would be so simple to fix and avoid a really annoying immersion-breaker.

Collectibles and/or pick ups that you have to chase. Looking at you Psychonauts.
Its fun and in keeping with the world and far more of a PS1 or 2 thing than a current one but it does stop being cute pretty quickly. Especially if one of those pick-ups is health and you’re in a boss fight before you can afford whatever upgrade makes items suck toward you.

So fucking annoying. Ive just finished Midnight Suns and, yeah, it forces you to visit the same two merchants every day (Blade and Iron Man) and they have four lines of dialogue between them. 'Welcome to Tonys scary demon cave' GET FUCKED, TONY

I want to play Midnight Suns for the combat but the shity sims/social crap really puts me off (and its major part of the game if you want upgrades iirc). Shame the devs outsourced that part

Quite amazing that had the audacity to re-use the map from the first game, but only to turn the game into a huge collectathon. As if they forgot to put it collectibles before and had to make up for it. That would be like if Tears of the Kingdom just had 3000 Korok seeds and nothing else.

Having to click the stick in to sprint. Feels like I'm going to break the damn thing when you have to run for long periods.
Give me a sprint button.

"Press this specific key/button to continue"
*Presses shoulder button or any random key and it still works*
Why?

Why do we have to press start to go to the main menu after booting up a game? Why isn't it loading straight to that?

I’m not a fan of using the stick as a button in general. So many tense encounters and boss fights ruined by my character crouching or running/stopping running at a critical moment.

R3 is the worst button ever devised, convince me otherwise.

If there's an online shooter that has R3 as a melee option(CoD) I have to change it. For some reason I always click it in when going to shoot.

R3 is the worst button ever devised, convince me otherwise. The Microsoft Xbox Elite Controller 2 had some little nubby up/down switches on the back of it that I would constantly catch my fingers on in a very annoying way. That's half the reason why, when it developed what is apparently a very common fault with them only a few days outside of the warranty, , I went with a Razer Wolverine Ultimate as a replacement and I have not regretted it for a moment.

I have been playing a bit of Wolfenstein - The Old Blood and one thing that really irks me about it is that there are frequent scenarioes where the game wants the player to take a particular action without communicating it clearly. So in a number of cases I basically just tried to kill off (apparently) endlessly spawning soldiers, instead of taking the required action. Similar case with wanting the player to pick up a minigun because a miniboss is basically impossible otherwise and some other situations like that.

There’s one game that I absolutely loved where the ‘endlessly respawning baddies until you do what we want’ mechanic was the final boss fight and I had to pause mid-battle to look up what to do on youtube. Very annoying to be taken out of the game right at its climax. The game was Hellblade Senua’s Sacrifice If you’re interested.

I'm pretty sure the ‘endlessly respawning baddies until you do what we want’ mechanic (thanks, Simple!) reared its ugly head in the first Uncharted game, and I died to it umpteen times before finally resorting to YouTube. Turns out I was supposed to run past all the enemies, instead of attempting to gun them all down. Bloody annoying!

R2D2 is a tricky button combo to master.

One instance of respawning enemies that is slightly cheap but hailed as a big important emotional and storyline beat is the white phosphorus bombardment in Spec-Ops The Line.
All the think pieces talk about it as confronting the player with the reality and consequences of their actions but there’s no way through without doing it. Its not like a moment later where you’re confronted with the option of gunning down civilians but have the unspoken option of frightening them off by firing above their heads.
Obviously its a powerful moment but I do think being unskippable and just an infinite wave of dudes otherwise does slightly undermine it from a gameplay perspective.

"Press this specific key/button to continue" *Presses shoulder button or any random key and it still works* Why? Much worse: "press this button" but this button doesn't actually do anything. Like in Skyrim or Fallout 4 or whatever, sometimes it says "press Enter" but it won't react to either Enter key, you have to press E instead.

Overloading one button with two actions like sprint and dodge, adding delay to these actions

I don't mind stick to sprint or crouch, but only if they actually toggle.
Most games have the option in the menus these days, but some games still use hold stick to crouch/sprint, which is just deviant.

Devs still can't make a good map eg Jedi survivor or another crab's treasure
Also just stop with the sub-par marvel type quipping characters - the people that shat out the immortals of averium character design and script must have brain rot or where on their 5th tin of lead paint.

Chess based mini-games. Fuck off.
I'm not learning how to play chess just because you couldn't be fucking bothered to come up with an interesting puzzle mechanic of your own, so you might as well just incorporate a button into the game's UI that launches an overlay window for a YouTube video to the solution to save me the trouble of searching for it.
