I doubt any of my contributions in this thread are actually game mechanics. Anyway, maps where you can't zoom in or out enough. Also, maps with no legend.

Also, maps with no legend. Every map needs a good backstory

Chess based mini-games. Fuck off.
I'm not learning how to play chess just because you couldn't be fucking bothered to come up with an interesting puzzle mechanic of your own, so you might as well just incorporate a button into the game's UI that launches an overlay window for a YouTube video to the solution to save me the trouble of searching for it.
This sounds quite specific, what game or games are you referring to? Watch Dogs has them, I enjoyed them, sorry

Kunitsu-Gami special edition... It's an excellent game, but whyyyyyyy?
You need to finish a level to unveil the objectives. Even if you meet the criteria, you won't unlock any of these on your first playthrough. Oh, and quite a lot of the levels seem to have contradictory objectives that require more than one playthrough (light all of the lanterns vs light none)
Pretty sure I've complained about this one before, but QoL stuff shouldn't ever be hidden behind an upgrade path too, especially something like moving your units around all at once in a game like this where it would be useful from the start.

It's also got some annoying difficulty spikes. Probably because I'm Shit at Games, but the boss battles seem far more difficult than the tower defence style gaming of the villages. That massive ant that you have to hit in the arse is...well a pain in the arse.
You're obviously supposed to go back and replay levels, but it would have been nice to have a more branching less linear progress down the mountain.

Have we mentioned "paying to unlock extra toolbars in the UI of a MMO" yet?

Enemies in souls games that aggro even if you sneak up on them from behind. Cheats

There's loads of them. Happens in Lies of P as well. Any enemy they want to force you to fight

Basic interactions being fiddly enough to drag down (not to mention slow down) everything.
Like clicking on bodies for loot, but they are either obscured by other bodies or by the environment.
Or having to do inventory management by switching to a different character and having no direct way of moving around items between them.

Star Trek: Resurgence
Too many to list! I'm quite impressed at how far this game goes to prove just how bad game mechanics can be (in many variations!)! Was there even a QA team in this production team? Or were they all just incompetent? Either way impressively incompetent/abscent!

Impressions were not good! The first interaction was a prompt to press RT. No prior warning that a controller was necessary. Also, moving the cursor into certain areas using LS or RS is agonisingly slow. I'll persevere as I like Star Trek.

Do persevere as the story & characters are actually very good. It's just the frequent mechanics, inconsistent graphics and jankiness which will have you faceplanting frequently!

I get mildly irked when a game fails to remember my preferred settings, and makes me adjust them manually each time.
Stranger of Paradise is the latest example of this - every time I go into the Battle Settings menu to tinker with my gear, I have to re-sort the list. (The game wants to arrange it with new acquisitions at the top, while I prefer to have it arranged by equipment level.)

Fire Emblem forcing me to upgrade Wallace as part of a tutorial. Yay, knight. Upgraded at level 12, never going to use him

(The game wants to arrange it with new acquisitions at the top, while I prefer to have it arranged by equipment level.) I want to say it wants to always have new acquisitions at the top but the rest of the list keeps your preferred sort (so it doesn't just auto-sort by new for everything you have, just keeps the unchecked new pickups visible), but it's been a bit too long... I'm good at remembering boss strats and cheeses, not menu options

Don't think you can play Hard mode from a clean save, can you? I know you unlock Hector mode post game

Don't think you can play Hard mode from a clean save, can you? I know you unlock Hector mode post game Unfortunately you can't AFAIK. There's probably a code or something for it though, if you're on an emulator. FWIW Lyn mode units' inventories reset on Eliwood/Hector's stories, so you'd only be able to use that particular Knight Crest on Kent or Sain. Plus you probably wouldn't even get close to level 20 on either of them in Lyn's story, so you'd be promoting them early. It is annoying not having an extra early Paladin, but not overly so.

Oh well. It's customary to have an early upgraded character you'll never use anyway- Marcus, Vander. Just take their weapons off them and use them as bait/shields

Just take their weapons off them and use them as bait/shields Some of them are much closer to usable than you might think, tbh. FE7 Marcus being among them. There's a stark difference between the Jagen/Jeigan archetype (exp siphon early game prepromote, like Jagen himself, FE6 old man Marcus etc) and the Oifey archetype (actually good early game prepromote, like FE8 Seth, FE9/10 Titania etc). Heck, there's been solo Seth runs of FE8's Hard mode

Although to be fair even the Jagen-est of Jagens are indispensable in early Hard mode chapters when your other units can barely take one hit each

Just try and rewire your brain into thinking its a janky port of a 2012 Telltale game - because functionally, that’s exactly what it is - and not a brand new release from last year. Its exactly the sort of game Star Trek should have but its such a dated and buggy execution. Lots of unnecessary gameplay clutter too.

I'll add this here. If you can't swim then don't add water to the levels or block it off..

On the other hand, all games should have screen-wipes when you die.

Creepy minigames in Japanese games. I don't know what was changed/removed/censored where you go to bed and wake up to one of your companions in Fire Emblem Engage but I bet it was stroking their faces or something (and caused outrage amongst paedos anime fans)

I’m hardly a prude, but I don’t want to pick my genitalia in games. I don’t want to flirt with or have sex with other characters. I don’t want to hear horny groans when characters vault things or take damage. I just want to fight stuff and solve puzzles. Leave me alone!
