Wall/ledge climbing. It's never been any fun in the history of gaming.

You mean those animations in Tomb Raider and Uncharted that often exist to slow gameplay down to a snails pace in order to load in a ton of new assets, or the Prince of Persia kind in which you're looking for the next 3 or 4 platforms to chain together like a ninja wizard?

The slow kind. Tomb Raider, Jedi Fallen Order, Ocarina of Time, etc.

Yeah. Those are bad. Any effort to make them feel dramatic or tense is absolutely wasted.
I think it's all I remember of the first Uncharted game.

Talent Trees.
They're an RPG staple and there was a time when I would like them. But over time I've come to really find them tedious. And they're cropping up in non-rpgs too. Most trees are bloated out with talents that just increase stats in unexciting ways. I can't be arsed spending time pouring over them to look for the best paths to the exciting sounding stuff and can't be arsed with "the meta". Just let me buy abilities as I see fit without having to fill in arbitary nodes with arbitary level requirements.
As talent trees get bigger and more complex the more I want them to just fuck off.

The slow kind. Tomb Raider, Jedi Fallen Order, Ocarina of Time, etc. Although they’re not slow the sliding sections that are all over Fallen Order are presumably also loading screens and are uniformly bad to play.

When just touching an enemy causes you harm, unless it's spikey or firey etc

Card mechanics in strategy games, well or card games on a PC or just board games on a PC.
I have both board and card games to play in person with people, let video games be their own fucking thing and stop just using mechanics from them. Why Firaxis' new Midnight Suns thing has no interest to me over a new XCOM.

I have a few...
Follow missions... Slowly walking - too far away START AGAIN. too close START AGAIN. That type of thing has never been fun and likely never will be
Map bloat. It could be a masterpiece but if the map is littered with collectibles and points of interest I get instantly overwhelmed and turn it off never to return
Scenery that doesn't react to your character.Think curtains and other such items that if you get close enough you realise it's actually just a wall or static, often flat object. Kills the immersion for me, particularly in modern realistic looking games
Fixed save points - I'd like to start and stop playing when it's convenient to me thanks
Saving tied to resources - Ink ribbons anyone?
Fetch quests. I was loving a recent play through of BioShock until it asked me to get 5 of these and 7 millon of those (maybe exaggerating) I don't no where to start, I'll press the power button instead
Extremely obtuse puzzles - if I need to be practically psychic to solve it, it's nether fun nor satisfying.
Crafting - I don't want to collect millions of things to craft one thing that is often not worth the effort it takes to craft it
Limited inventory space/very rare items - I've finished so many games with awesome weapons or resources tucked away to save space only to never use them in case I'd need them later.

The way no one admits that pre-rendered backgrounds, or at least a fixed camera, actually allows for a great more visibility than a third person camera I miss this in gaming. Having very specific camera angles really can enhance immersion by allowing the creator to carefully script the whole experience. I've always liked pre-rendered backgrounds too. To this day I still find some of the work done in games like PS1 Final Fantasy games or Resident Evil just as "believable" as some of recent games. There's something about the combination of the backgrounds and the perspective shifts that still gives the environments a realistic feel.

Yeah I can't see pre-rendered backgrounds ever coming back sadly because the reasons for their existence just aren't a thing any more. But there is something vaguely otherworldly about them that modern 3D games haven't been able (or really tried) to recreate. I know this doesn't make sense because the backgrounds were usually made using CGI anyway but there was something... painterly about them? Or maybe I'm just nostalgic for them I dunno.
I really do wonder how the market would react to a modern AAA game doing the fixed camera thing. Probably not well tbh. What was the last major game that did it? GOW3?

Surprised no one in the indie retro scene has made a proper old school survival horror game. It's always first person non-combat stuff

It's probably my age but I do find old school fixed camera games way easier to explore. Like steifybobbins says, having the exact scene in front of you that the developers designed I find it so much easier to know when you're done and should move on.
In general I find "clearing out an area" a much more digestible proposition in older pre-rendered/fixed camera games. Newer games rather than actually feeling content, I frequently just have to draw a line under it because I'm getting annoyed

I plan to! I've seen you post about it twice, is it as good as it looks? If you like early Resident Evil/Silent Hill on a big spaceship I'd say so! I've not found anything original about it yet but I'm only 4-5 hours in - in all honesty I'm not that bothered by the lack of originality as it's been a long time since I've played a game like this.

Bosses without health bars. I kind of accepted it in Monster Hunter: World, because I get what they were going for with the visual and behavioural clues, although I still wasn't a fan by any means; in a game like Hollow Knight, on the other hand, it makes no sense to me at all.

Playing RE2 remake and a zombie got killed with 1 head shot in a cutscene but you can't do that in game.

Get progress bar to 99% and hand in quest or whatever that should give you 25% towards the next level. Start next level at 0%...
Destiny 2 crafted weapons are fuckers for this.

Problem with health bars is that, at least in From games, when I've finally made some progress on a difficult boss and I can see that their health is low, it stresses me out so I panic and get greedy or make mistakes
It's satisfying when you're fighting a boss without a health bar and they suddenly die

Aunt AlisonI'm exactly the same when playing the From games, so I dispute the idea that health bars somehow make boss encounters easier (not that you were making said argument, but I've seen it used elsewhere!). I find it really irritating to make repeated attempts against a tough boss, and keep dying without having the faintest idea of whether or not I'm making progress. I get that some people like the suspense of not knowing, but it ain't for me.

It's infuriating especially if it's poorly communicated if your hits even hurt the boss. A boss with a trillion HP and no hit feedback, that's a recipe for having a good time. Nothing like being 5 minutes into a battle and not knowing if you've even hit it once.

You need health bars in RPGs because there's a chance you're underleveled and wasting your time doing next to no damage. But in a game like Hollow Knight that isn't an issue, so as long as there's some kind of feedback to let you know you're hurting them, I think it's fine. I think most of the bosses in HK actually change their attacks after a certain amount of damage anyway. I could go for some Hollow Knight. Where on earth is Silksong?
