Can't say it's a massive surprise that Google would kill off Stadia after they closed all their game development but what is surprising is everything anyone bought from the Stadia store (hardware and software) will be refunded.
It'll be completely closed in January.

5 people will be devastated.
Honestly, if they didn't charge for each game, it could've been great. They were adamant about not being video game Netflix, but that should have been their model. Nobody wants to sub to a service AND pay for access to each individual title. Which you wouldn't even own, less than digital purchases on other services, because the service would eventually be shut off, as it will now.

It's Phil Harrison I'm concerned for, yet another fuck up with his name attached, maybe he'll get a job in the Truss government?

The real surprise is that it lasted three entire years

I'm going to miss seeing that logo at the end of trailers, the only reminder that this thing exists.

Fuck's sake. Where's Eurogamer when you need it? I could have totally pulled up a post predicting this practically to the letter when it was announced and acted like a smug cunt for like 45 seconds about it.

Pretty surprised that they're doing full refunds. Probably speaks volumes about how popular it was...
Came close to getting one a few times (even had a pre-order in before I saw sense)

I bought a Premiere edition on a deal purely for the Chromecast it came packed with so I would laugh my tits off if I qualified for a refund.

Oh wait, I do, and they are writing it off to such a degree they don't even want the stuff sending back.
Laughing my tits off.

Well that is totally surprising and unexpected.
Was the controller any good, by the way? I imagine we'll be finding quite a few of them in the secondhand market now.

Everyone had the same "Google always pulls the plug on new products" take when this was announced. I don't think they've ever come out with a product and kept it long term. Their most successful product is Youtube, but that was around for years before Google bought it. And the Youtube Red/Originals shows they tried to make happen went away as quickly as they were announced.

Thing is, I think the idea will be successful to the point of it being industry standard but we're probably a console gen or more likely two away from it being able to be. It was a bit Dreamcasty in being too much too soon.

I can never get my head around Google, they make something good or bad and either way it's dead in a year or two. I'm still shocked Chromecasts are still around.

I wonder if the few exclusives like PixelJunk Raiders will now appear on other platforms?

I think Ubisoft+'s streaming solution is through Stadia, I wonder what will happen to that.

I think Ubisoft+'s streaming solution is through Stadia, I wonder what will happen to that. Wasn't the plan to sell the tech as white label for other people but not run Stadia as a service themselves?

I think we all did. Everyone had the same "Google always pulls the plug on new products" take when this was announced. You can’t help but think it’s become a self fulfilling thing. If they brought out gmail today I’d think twice about signing up.

I wonder if the few exclusives like PixelJunk Raiders will now appear on other platforms? I guess that could be up to the original publishers. Not that there were many exclusives in the first place. The only other one that comes to mind is Gylt, which was okay but unimpressive. We'll see if Tequila Works ports it somewhere else. Stadia being effectively a PC should make a Steam/EGS/whatever port super easy anyway.

Ubisoft+ is using Stadia and Luna. Pick your poison, really. I’m surprised Luna is still a thing even now.

The controller is usb only, its WiFi and not Bluetooth. Even via USB, it's not PC compatible unless playing stadia is it?. They need to change that to prevent mass plastic junk.

Shit, I was on the verge of ordering the Stadia Chromecast when it was £20 but decided against it. What a fool I was.
Was also interested in Gylt since they showed it but completely forgot about it with the game being on Stadia. Hope they do actually port it across now
