Shit, I was on the verge of ordering the Stadia Chromecast when it was £20 but decided against it. What a fool I was. Was also interested in Gylt since they showed it but completely forgot about it with the game being on Stadia. Hope they do actually port it across now That's what I bought, just for the uhd Chromecast for BT Sport. Money well spent imo.

Oh wait, I do, and they are writing it off to such a degree they don't even want the stuff sending back. Laughing my tits off. did they email you to say you were eligible? I've got one but never did anything other than using the chromecast.

Yeah this has really made me laugh today more when they closed down all the first party studios, left the service on life support and people were still trying to convince themselves it would continue on. Google wanted an instant success from the get go and when it wasn't so Google did what they do best.

Even besides them doing something half arsed again, there's something about launching a gaming platform that takes more than spending a couple billion it seems. I don't know what it is, but it certainly seems harder than getting into the film industry for instance.

They offered me a free one two years ago, always a good sign when companies start having to give stuff away I remember getting a free OnLive when they were handing them out at EGX one year, I think I tried one game and never bothered again. It was a nice looking bit of hardware, the controller was pretty good.
Still I got some use out the the leads it came with (network/HDMI/Micro-USB).

The controller is usb only, its WiFi and not Bluetooth. Even via USB, it's not PC compatible unless playing stadia is it?. They need to change that to prevent mass plastic junk. I have used it wired to play something on my Mac via Steam. So it does use a standard interface. But IIRC it won't work on most consoles, e.g. PS5/Xbox/Switch

OnLive actually had a better go at it than Google I think Games were priced OK, they had decent sales I'm sure and you could try every single one for 1 hour for free. I used to like it because it supported my Xperia Play and playing Assassin's Creed 2 just on my phone at the time felt pretty cool

Half an hour free iirc. The interface with streams from other players was at least a cool idea.

I remember trying Stadia when it was in beta. They were giving AssCreed Odyssey for free to anyone who tried it. It was actually pretty good IMO, but I just never cared for the business model so I didn't check out the full service when it officially launched.
On the other hand, I've tried GamePass Cloud and it's absolute trash. Looks so compressed. It's only worth playing with to get specific "play <insert game>" to get 100 reward points or whatever.

I can never get my head around Google, they make something good or bad and either way it's dead in a year or two. Not that I use it, but, er, the Google Chrome browser?

Nobody wants to sub to a service AND pay for access to each individual title. That apparently isn't true, you sub and play games or you buy and play what you bought. All in the past tense now, obvs.
But that just shows how confusing the offering was and that never goes down well. The "buying" part was completely off the mark, too, I for one wouldn't pay full price just for access to something.

That's all digital purchases are though. Just have to hope that Sony or MS don't go under before we've moved onto something else.

Well, Ubisoft just recently cut off access to DLC for some games on PC, just so we all know where this is all heading.
Edit: Not all digital purchases are made equal, either. If you get to have some files on your computer there's a big chance sometime down the line someone will find a way to run them without the "owner's" blessing. If it's just in the fucking cloud you're fucked. At least Google is giving access to saves.

I actually liked the idea, though they completely messed up the business model behind it.
This must've cost them something crazy. The marketing, the tech, the refunds and of course the developers. See, another thing they could have done from the beginning was guaranteeing refunds should the service get killed. I think that with that reassurance a lot more people would have jumped in.
Bought Doom 64 just to test the tech, Spiritfarer as it was on sale and I wanted it on the go and the Premiere bundle thing when it was down to 20€.
Has anyone received an email yet regarding the refunds?

It was always going to fail because it's Google. Credit where it's due though with the refunds, I couldn't imagine Sony/MS/Nintendo ever doing so.

They have plenty of successful products (Pixel phones, Google Home, Chrome/Android OS etc), but the number of things they've killed off massively outweighs any of that. killedbygoogle.com/

This is one of the things that did for it. People wanted it to be a game jukebox they could take anywhere. In the end it launched in a fully 'why wouldnt I just buy a playstation?' state. Nobody was going to pay full whack for the old games it launched with. Confusing sub tiers, expensive games, faff to set up. No thanks.

At least I'll get a refund for that lovely minty green controller, but let's be honest the service was pretty much dead on arrival.
Google killing everything is par for the course, but I'll never forgive them for killing Inbox (the superior successor to Gmail that they gutted most of the good features from and ported over to Gmail instead, but somehow made them worse) and Allo (the best chat app they've ever developed).

Jeez going through these Google graveyard sites there is a lot of stuff that would have really knocked a small business about if they went all in. Remind me never to embrace a random Google technology

What I leant is buy a failing one when it's 80% off, then get refunded a year later.

It's a freebie on PS+ next week and well worth playing fwiw.

Ok, this all makes sense now as I've just read that employees only found about 5 minutes before the announcement that top brass were shutting Stadia down. It's also the same shit they pulled when they told first party devs everything was fine and then a week or so later shut all the studios down.
