Can I shock you? The only Star Trek I’ve ever seen is the JJ films. Consider me shocked. To be fair the only one I really remember is first contact

I would genuinely recommend the recent 4K remaster of The Motion Picture. It looks and sounds lovely.

Watched them all again recently. First two are as good if not better than anything MCU have done. Logan was weirdly boring on a second viewing. If Geefe agrees with you, you know you need to reassess.

Think we should do the Marvel lot next, give gamingdave some work to earn his pennies with the next spreadsheet.

The best Trek movies for Trek virgins are the Abrams ones. Which of course, the old school fans hate.

Is it good for Trek virgins who have literally never seen the tv show? Haha. Fuck no. It probably is more than any other, tbh. It has a few new characters and you don’t really need any bigger background than ‘old guys trying to recapture lost glory’. It draws a *lot* of inspiration from 2001, so there is a lot of just atmosphere shots. Most of the other ones run into each other and require far more background knowledge, so it’s much harder to just drop into them. I reckon most people have absorbed enough pop culture references to watch it just fine. Like everyone at least knows Kirk is the space cowboy, Spock is Mr Logic, etc. Theres no back references to any previous stories, really.

Logan is another case of “a clone of a better movie/genre but with superhero shenanigans”, in this instance, Shane (mostly) and other Westerns - see also The Batman/Seven, Winter Soldier/Three Days of the Condor/70s paranoia stuff etc.
I mean, those three listed are good movies but they’re still functionally window dressing on better films.

Also my unpopular opinion is that The Wolverine is a) underrated and b) better than Logan.
Not Origins though, that’s shit.

I’ve only seen the first Abrams Trek movie and none of the old ones at all
Although I’ve seen far too many episodes of the original series as my friends used to watch it relentlessly when they were getting stoned. Sometimes I’d go home, eat lunch, chill and then go back in the evening and they’d be sat in the same place watching yet another episode
It did go off the TV when the friend, whose house it was, wanted to watch Baywatch. At which point I’d leave

Now we know why he's really called Bones. We started watching Next Generation a couple of days back and Bones was indeed a walking skeleton in his little cameo. Also, never noticed the bloke in a skirt before.

Is it good for Trek virgins who have literally never seen the tv show? Haha. Fuck no. I would say First Contact would be a good starting point. Its got character stuff, 90s blockbuster action and solid production values. Plus the TNG cast are probably the best family of all the ensembles.

I dunno, First Contact assumes a lot of pre-knowledge of the Borg is understood, especially the Locutus storyline.

I've watched a few of them and First Contact is the only one I can remember not making me want to claw my own eyes out.

I don’t think it needs anymore than Wrath of Khan which would probably be the other virgin pick

The Terminator: 10 Terminator 2: 9.5 Terminator 3: 4 Terminator Salvation: 5 Terminator Genisys: 0 Terminator Dark Fate: 7 Pretty much agree with that other than I liked Salvation (6.5) and can't remember anything about Dark Fate (5). If we're doing Mission Impossible at any point, everything from 3 onwards is basically interchangeable in my mind too.

See Genisys is a bit of a guilty pleasure of mine. I know it should be shit, yet I find it really good fun nontheless. Emilia Clarke and Potatohead are hilariously miscast but I actually really like all the setpieces and how they mixed things up with John Connor.

I’ve seen both more than once and I still get mixed up on which is which with Dark Fate and Mega Drive
Salvation managing to make the future war so boring was an achievement of sorts though
