I’ve somehow only just discovered that this years thrilling NFS instalment is being developed by Criterion. Ermahgerd!!
Does this mean it might actually good?

Anything from EA that isn't made by Respawn I would be very wary about. Who knows how many of the Burnout devs are still at Criterion?
I do think there's a big gap in the market for a Forza Horizon style game focused on street racing and that car culture. Especially if it's got cop chases (which is something I've always felt Horizon has missed).

I started it yesterday. So far feels quite a lot like Heat to me, though I'm still early and didn't play a huge amount of Heat (few hours).

Please tell me you turned off the cartoon effects.

Hot Pursuit remake aside, which is still the nuts, I think the last one I played was Payback, which was so bad I’ve sworn off the series since.
I’m guessing this has an EA thingy trial, so will try it out later.
I have hope.

Might be better in reality, but I'm struggling to see anything in footage I've seen of this that justifies its current gen only development. It's pretty enough, and looks fun, but I expected more from a game that wasn't developed for cross generations.

Mildly interested in Unbound. I've player pretty much every NFS iteration to date but mainly because racing games are among my favourite genres. Heat was average and so was Payback. I won't hold my hopes high from what I saw in the trailer.

Please tell me you turned off the cartoon effects. Nope. I like the graffiti style to it. Though I feel like there could be more integrated into the world. It’s fairly limited.

I also like how this one looks. Photorealism is for racing sims a la Forza Motorsport, give me flashy effects in my arcade racers.
How does an EA free trial work, is it just a time limit/no saving?

Mentioned it was developed by Criterion, so does it feel a bit more like Burnout Paradise and Need For Speed Most Wanted, or does it still have the feel of the last gen Ghost-developed NFS? But yeah, I love the look of it. Arcade racing games should be flashy.

Gave it an hour or so thanks to the trial. No story mode, just the free roam, played a couple matches, got trashed by players with better cars than mine.
Feels a bit like a half-assed clone of Forza Horizon. Load times up the wazoo, even when challenging other players, which really should be a more seamless thing. Graphics are okay, but again... while the cartoonish style looks nice, I guess they couldn't be bothered making the enviroments also look the same, so you are stuck with the most generic map imaginable, and the style really clashes. Like I said, half-assed.
I wanted to mute the music immediately, but I guess if you are into hip-hop or rappers or whatever it is that cool young people listen to nowadays, maybe you'll like it. I sure didn't.
PC optimization felt lacking, as with most Frostbite games. Wish EA would get rid of that crap already. Granted my laptop isn't great, but a stable 60fps was off the table no matter what I did. But it feels to me like it doesn't do a great job of utilizing the CPU, especially given how last-gen it looks. Usage of both CPU and GPU was very low. The 30fps mode was more useful (and I could afford to play on 1080p and medium settings, using up the GPU much more), but didn't feel all that smooth compared to Forza Horizon 5. Also the handling doesn't feel good on a keyboard, like not at all.
Doubt I'll be giving them my money. If they gave me Auto Modellista 2, then maybe. Not this.

So it's basically Heat 2? That had a bad framerate, weird controls and a questionable soundtrack too.

You use a keyboard for driving games? Is that normal? Steering must be a nightmare. You know that you can use a controller on a PC right?

Steering must be a nightmare. You know that you can use a controller on a PC right? You can always tell when a driving game is good, because it will be good even with a keyboard. I've made some of my best times in Outrun 2 and Sega Rally Championship with the keyboard.

Put in a good two hours and came to the conclusion it's almost a carbon copy of Heat. The fresh coat of paint includes an online mode which seems to be a little more fleshed out and 60fps which makes the game much easier on the eyes (on Series X).

I wanted to love this because I thought the aesthetic looked great. I like that everything has a slightly 'Crackdown' look whilst the models are really detailed.
I've played about 40 minutes of the trial. It's fun and feels a bit like Burnout but not quite.
If this was £35 I'd be 'take my money' but I don't see a justification for £60.

I just couldn't get past the inane chatter. Didn't last 10 minutes and quit the game after I crossed the finish line of the opening tutorial race. Also love that you pick a "junker" lambo and it's absolutely immaculate as soon as you enter the game.
I'll probably give it another look when it comes to game pass proper.

The first 60-90 mins is basically a tutorial and then the game opens up and actually gains it's structure.

The cars feel a bit heavy to me, like driving milkfloats. I saw a review suggesting that turning up steering stability fixes this, but I think has to be done for individual cars. I am going to give it another go. Horizon I got bored with a long time ago (where the hell is that expansion I paid for a year ago?!) and I need a car itch scratching. I also like the urban setting, a bit PGR esque. Somebody should make a game about Project Gotham Racing really.

I will give it another go and try that, I didn't hate what I played but with the speed of the game the turning needs to be a bit more nimble to be able to dodge oncoming traffic.

I played another hour yesterday. I might have some negative bias here because I had a rare hangover but I think I'm parking it under 'wait for Gamepass'.
It was fun and it does indeed open up after the prologue but...
...being used to Horizon progression seems like it will be a real grind. I was getting near the front of the pack and then something with the physics would throw me into a crash and I couldn't place well. All the big races cost money and you can also place side bets (which I lost).
Crucially, I've reached an age where sometimes forcing myself through a game now gives me a bit of a feeling of guilt, like I could definitely be doing something more productive. I don't like that feeling and I got it with this, it felt like it was going nowhere.
I do think there's a good game here though but it's definitely not getting cash thrown at it from me.

Wife got me this for Christmas, loving it quite frankly.
Feels very NFS Underground mixed with Burnout Paradise. I've become very attached to a Subaru BRZ I've upgraded.
Looks lovely as well.
Didn't gel with the handling or drifting model at first but have totally got to grips with it now.
My only real criticism is that towards the end of each in-game racing week it starts to feel a tad grindy. Oh and the police are absolute rubber bandy fuckers when the heat gets crazy.
