I'd just come off the back of The Royal, so standards for hospital drama were very high

Well that's the 1 nomination worldwide for Tiny Tina out the way.

My top three were actually the only new releases I bought this year, otherwise Horizon never would've made the cut.
My favourite non-2022 game I played in the past 12 months was Slay the Spire.

I think the only new stuff I played this year was Xenoblade 3, Monkey Island, and Stray. So, that's 1 - Xenoblade 3 2 - Return to Monkey Island 3 - Stray

Yeah. The two games I’ve spent the most hours with this year, Lost Judgment and The Outer Worlds, are from 2021 and 2019, respectively.

It’s been a great year if you stray from AAA. Shredder’s Revenge, Monkey Island, a few decent Warhammer games, Stray, Norco, Signalis, Citizen Sleeper, Case of the Golden Idol, to name just a few from a glance at my recently played on Steam.

I can only think of 3 games from this year, that I played this year.
1. Elden Ring 2. Xenoblade 3 3. Triangle Strategy
So I guess they're it? I'm tempted by Pentiment too, so maybe that will replace something if I get around to playing it.

Can I just shock you?
I like Midnight Suns.
It’s probably my favourite game I’ve played this year and I guess therefore my goty. Can’t remember the last time I binged a game like this. It’s great!

I agree, for me its less that it's been a bad year for games, just that I've been focused on catching up on good games from the last few years and been on a more nostalgic kick for emulation.
If anything the continual wealth of stuff to get through is such that it keeps piling onto the backlog and therefore makes it less and less likely that I'll get to the game in the year of it's release, unless it's called Persona or Final Fantasy.

So, do you think it would be good for someone who's indifferent to Marvel stuff? Not a hater, just a tactics-liker where being able to kiss Spiderman does not add that much extra value.

What MolarAm🔵 said, except a) I genuinely detest superhero stuff, and b) it's the cards element that appeals to me, not the tactics - would it be as dumb a purchase as I've made it sound?

The core combat missions are absolutely terrific. And it does open up enough where the side hangout stuff becomes a non-issue, I now just hammer the skip button as I really don’t feel like I’m missing anything.
I’m hoping they’ll do some kind of roguelike hoard mode or something, as just picking a team and going through dynamic missions towards a random end boss or something would be amazing.

That's very helpful, thank you! I'll push it higher on the list, though I'll probably still wait for it to be on sale.

There is a lot of Marvel-y fluff in there, but after a point you can skip through most of it. The first few hours are the worst for it as it front loads a lot of exposition with a handful of fights. The actual story, in amongst kissing Spider-Man, is some pretty decent comicbook fare. After a while though it balances out and there’s plenty of tactical fights available. The card-combat system is fantastic and it’s really enhanced by the the Marvel-ness as the animations are great. So in summary…maybe?

I’ve not really played many games full stop this year now I’ve just checked
Went back and 100% completed RE 1-4 just for something to do, enjoyed the challenge. Rolled another Dark Souls character
Downloaded some small games for free - Hotshot Racing, Hot Wheels, Golf with Friends - found them quite boring and gave up on them
Completed Ratchet & Clank (PS4) and Deathloop just recently, enjoyed them both
I really am a shit ‘gamer’

3. Or maybe Steel Rising, I had a really good time with it, glitches, bugs and all Ahh, I just got that a couple of days ago. The Bastille Edition is on sale on PSN at the moment. I’m not sure if it’ll be my game of the year in hindsight, as I’m not the biggest fan of Soulslikes (Elden Ring is definitely not on my list), but I do appreciate how much more manageable it is than other games in its genre. And I want to root for Spiders and their French AA charm. Stranger of Paradise probably has my favorite version of this style of combat though. I liked how the different Final Fantasy jobs played. The game as a whole is dumb as hell though.

FH5 is probably the best game I've played that's released this year, but it's not amazing, it's more of a comfort food game.
1) Forza Horizon 5 (not as good as FH4) 2) Total Warhammer III (not as good as TWII, yet) 3) Pokémon Legends Arceus (it's ok)
Trying to think of a list I realise I've been so boring this year, barely branching out in to unique experiences. The most fun I've had gaming this year has been playing heavily modded Skyrim.
Should I buy Dwarf Fortress to be less dull?

This year has mostly been about Older Games Load Faster with the PS5. Only new games I can think of were Horizon 2 and Callisto Protocol, neither of which I’d nominate for an award. They took everything I enjoyed about Horizon 1’s gameplay out of Horizon 2 and the same between Callisto Protocol via Dead Space.
edit
if Elden Ring was this year, call it that. I didn’t finish it or like it, but I played it and it’s definitely a thing that succeeds at being itself.

How have people not got vampire Survivors in the lists? Best £3 I spent on a game for a decade.

3) Pokémon Legends Arceus (it's ok) Oh wait, fuck, Legends Arceus was this year? *Googles* Yeah alright, easy third place for mine then: 1) Xenoblade 3 2) Elden Ring 3) Legends Arceus I thought it was late December for some reason but there you go
