To a point but it's still very fun. 3 was just stupid in so many ways where all the main characters were always within 30 ft of each other at all times.

As much as I didn't like 3 at the time, the trilogy still holds that nostalgia. I think it's unfortunate for myself that I became somewhat jaded over the years with superhero films, and back in the 00s, you had X-Men, Spider-Man. They were good simple times.

X-men 2, Spiderman 2, Blade, the holy trinity of Marvel movies.

I'm old enough to remember when the general consensus was DC made good superhero films and the ones based on Marvel were a bit pants.

/remembers watching Death of The Incredible Hulk featuring Daredevil and Thor and David Hasselhoff as Nick Fury in his own movie. Terrible, terrible days.

Don't know if they cover this, but I was checking out the Love and Thunder deleted scenes on Disney+, and there was a scene from late in the film - when Jane is in the hospital - featuring Russell Crowe. He was friendly with Thor, which is obviously a huge change from what we got.
Thought it was interesting, because I've seen a lot of stuff around the making of the film but never heard of what was clearly quite a big change (especially given the post-credit scene).

I'm fascinated how they're going to introduce the xmen. I always thought after Secret Wars would have been better as a soft reboot.

The end of The Marvels will probably have some relevance but fuck knows what's going on really.

with xmen, they shouldn't try to shoe horn all the past films etc, just start from fresh and if a person plays the same character who cares

I think based on the timing of this production, what they seem to be doing with Fantastic Four, and the ending of The Marvels, they're going to introduce us to another world full of established X-Men, and then basically smush them onto our world in Secret Wars. So this will allow them to just debut a fully-fledged X-Men team.
Because we've already established that mutants exist on the main 616 Earth, but not as widespread or understood as in the X-Men, you could still develop and introduce younger characters, but they wouldn't need to drip-feed Prof X starting his school or anything like that.
Don't know if this is how they'll play it, but if Secret Wars ends with (say) a million mutants on Earth, they might use the refugee angle to do the whole "hate and fear" thing.

After the calamitous failure of "Secret Invasion" I don't think they could go for another refugee story.

I just can't see how they'll make a good X-Men film again. Now that Marvel have their stinky paws all over it, I expect it to have less social commentary, and more SMASH SMASH SMASH.

I don't really buy that argument, because (a) about half the X-Men films were really ropey to begin with, and (b) even some of the weaker MCU projects - Falcon & the Winter Soldier, Secret Invasion - still managed to have pretty decent social commentary.

The social commentary in the Fox movies never really went beyond the 'it's kinda like the nazis' of the first 2 movies did it? I don't remember much social commentary in the Future past set. Though I wasn't paying much attention by that point.
Falcon & Winter Soldier looked like it was going to do something interesting with the immigrants/refugees being the blipped people who returned (or possibly the non-blipped people who'd moved in to their homes in the meantime, depending on your viewpoint).
Would have been interesting to explore that further, but the show was a bit of a mess, so it never really did anything with it.

Whilst it's separate to the mainline MCU, X-Men 97 was absolutely *full* of social commentary, and as the reception was good they would hopefully have some awareness of what people want in their mutant based media.

The X-Men has the same problem a lot of the other marvel stuff, most notably Falcon and Winter Soldier, in that the bad guys tend to have a decent point so the goodies come across as boot licking quislings. Even the first X-Men movie where they turn that Senator into a puddle of Jizz you think 'yeah, good for you'. I don't think the social commentary in any of them is really anything to write home about. They identify an issue, empathise for 30 seconds, and then demonstrate how wrong it is by.shooting a laser at it.
I dunno, I think 'X-Men Vs the brotherhood of evil mutants' type stuff will look kind of ridiculous so they should be going to full X-Men Vs MAGA. That could be relevant commentary but I would think it will end up being Magneto Vs The Fash with the X-Men riding in to defend the status quo because they are scared of offending anyone.

I think there's a lot of social commentary in the Fox X-Men films that you probably didn't even notice or read into. I mean literally the first one is where Rogue and Wolverine are confronted with how they struggle to be a mutant, and deal with their powers, which can be read into multiple different ways. And how the general public perceive mutants.

I think when you have filmmakers with lived experiences making these movies (or shows), then you get more nuanced - if subtle - takes on the issue. I definitely don't want to feel like I'm riding into the defence of Bryan Singer, but as a queer man, he was able to do the whole "coming out" stuff pretty well. And obviously you get a lot of racial commentary from Black Panther, but also in the (possibly only good?) scene in Secret Invasion where Fury and Rhodey are talking about being Black men in positions of power in America. And - yes - X-Men 97 is chock full of it, with (IMO) the undercurrent "Magneto was right" and Beast's comment of "our mistake was waiting for your permission" or whatever it was he says dealing explicitly with the point I think user Bongo was making: that real-world history has shown us, unfortunately, that passive co-operation isn't really working as well as we'd hoped, and the more aggressive tactics of a Magneto might actually be necessary.
TL;DR - get actual POC/queer filmmakers on board and fill it with allegory.

I'm also not really sure what else they could have done with it, other than just keep repeating the same things over and over. Though hopefully someone more creative than me could have done it.

I hope that the new X-Men films are littered with numerous aspects of social commentary, so, like great song lyrics, people can take different things from it. But what I expect is Bacefook being littered with comments about how the X-Men are now part of Disney’s woke agenda.

Obviously spoilers but this is looking rather good, it also puts to bed any ideas that The Eternals wasn't on 616 once and for all.

I'm sort of surprised they haven't done a big formal update of their release schedule. In the past they've been so open about exactly what is releasing when. And, of course, due to everyone's favourite and most creative of announcements - a Disney investors call - we know of quite a few dates for "unannounced Marvel movie".
I imagine that, after the Kangtastrophe and the general pivot to "fewer but better", they might not want to get too far ahead of themselves in terms of publicly saying (eg) "Doctor Strange 3 for November '27" or whatever.

Back from finally seeing Deadpool & Wolverine. Little disappointed, after hearing all the positive buzz. It was enjoyable and certainly had a few laughs throughout, but other than those I found it a bit average. The plot was very much an after thought, which is understandable from the perspective of it being Deadpool, but hard to look past when you are dealing with this very much feeling like the formal merging of Fox Marvel and Disney Marvel. It feels like this should have been more monumental, but ended up not really being that. When it became clear the bulk of the film was going to be spent in the Void (a place that didn't seem to have much thought put into what it actually was), I started to lose interest in what was actually happening. Some neat cameos, as has already been mentioned, but, again, they feel rather inconsequential, because you know they are only really there to serve the purpose of some recognition before they leave the screen besides girl Wolverine from Logan, who seems to some how appear in the final scene without any explanation of how she is still around At least the film acknowledges that the multiverse hasn't really worked for Marvel, but whether that means the series will take that onboard and actually do something different I expect not. Even without having much affection for the Fox Marvel films, I did like the little send off during the credits.
