It is just the best film you watched in 2022, does not necessarily has to have been released in 2022 Fire of Love is definitely one I am looking out for, scenery so spectacular it looks like CGI, and not the shit kind they use in all the Superhero movies  Folks coming late to There will be blood and Moana is delightful. My version of that was a film called Arctic from 2018 with Mads Mikkelsen, a gem. Been a year where Mads has risen to my must watch list. |

The best films I saw from 2022 are Everything Everywhere All at Once and Prey, two absolute five-star masterpieces.
The best new old film I saw is The Shootist, the 70s western starring John Wayne and James Stewart. I was trying to watch a lot of westerns this year, I'd never seen that one before, and it's really, really good. Very sad and metatextual. You can see its echoes in stuff like Unforgiven and Logan.
I've also watched stuff like my beloved Captain America: The First Avenger and Paddington 2, and it being Christmas, I'm bound to watch Die Hard soon, so technically those are the best films I saw this year.

Jimmy Stewart was always reliable. Winchester '73 is a good one. I can't watch Wayne movies on principle. Absolute cunt of a man.

Pinocchio doesn't do a Pan's Labyrinth and end up being far more violent that you'd expected, does it?

Was Pan's Labyrinth surprisingly violent? It was definitely brutal, but it clearly had horror vibes, so wasn't out of nowhere.
Pinocchio seems to just be a PG, so unlikely to be particularly violent. I understand it is very dark though and probably not suitable for fairly young.
Not seen it yet. Mostly annoyed at Netflix doing its usual thing of only showing it in a couple cinemas. Will have to stream, but it is one I really wanted to see on the big screen. Had thought about trying to get London Film Festival ticket, but thought about it a bit late.

I dunno, but I went into it expecting something more like Labyrinth. Which was not what i got.
I'd heard Pinocchio was dark, but I was wondering how dark. Never know with Del Toro.

Not overly dark TBH but definitely has the patented Del Toro macabre in places.
Worth a watch for the sheer artistry involved in it's creation.
Though the story is very well trodden by this point, he weaves in a slight addition.

The bottle face mashing scene is one of the few that makes me cringe. It's up there with the hobbling and when the Jackass people did papercuts between their toes.

I always forget about films on streaming platforms or just never get around to them. Think that is why I still like using a delivery rental service. I can probably get many of the films through a streaming service (albeit often at lower picture and sound quality), but having a couple of discs delivered to me at a time with the need to post them back adds incentive to actually sit down and watch. When I can just watch it whenever, watch it later becomes watch it never.

Oh it's an Indian film? 3 hours!? This had better be worth it! 😅 It’s far too long but it does have a natural break point right in the middle, so I would watch it in 90 minute chunks. A lot of the draw of it is that it makes you say ‘lol, that’s so stupid’ every five minutes rather than it being a fantastic movie. It’s a bit like the Eurovision Song Contest of homoerotic Bollywood action movies. |
