I still need to finish the first but would be pretty happy with them going back and forth between this, Ghostwire and Rush.

I'll take one like the first one but the second one was shite after the first few hours. Loved Ghostwire Tokyo as well though.
Given the massive popularity of Resident Evil and the fact Konami are bringing Silent Hill back, then it is perfectly possible that that a third TEW is being considered.

I would be all over EW3. The first one was particularly amazing. Felt the story in the second wasn't quite as good and the focus shifted a bit from outright nasty nightmare horror to be more action oriented. It really didn't need to go semi open world.

So this is weird, because when TEW came out it was pretty much universally hated by people on Eurogamer, with the only disagreement being over which aspect of it were the most hateful.
TEW2 was actually playable and I enjoyed it a lot.

On the EG forum, there were quite a few who really loved the first I recall. It was definitely a bit marmite though.

I'd be in for sure. When the second one started off with you running down another long corridor, I thought here we go again, and immediately regretted my purchase. Luckily it was a fake out by the developers and the game blossomed in its semi-open world after that. The second game was really, really good, I thought.
wunty - you should have your own section on here - Wunty's Contrarian Corner or something. Jokes aside, there's def a split between people who preferred the more RE-like first game and couldn't really be blamed for questioning the open world thing in the second game.
Looking at that easter egg though, it seems like a third game is a pretty tenuous connection.

Blimey... We've found a game that Wunty didn't like!

The Evil Within 2 was really good. The semi-open structure lead to you wandering into some very unexpected encounters and unique tactical combat for a horror game
I love that semi-open level design generally though. It's a perfect mix of open and linear where you're free to explore and learn a location without it feeling like a chore

Yeah I echo this, found the sequel much more enjoyable than the first which was extremely obtuse in its gameplay plus it also felt incredibly janky.

The first part of the second game showed promise but it was marred by the constant pop in which is amongst the worst I’ve ever experienced. It was alright up to the photographer then it falls off a cliff and never recovers.

Absolutely hated the first one as it was horrible to play, broken, janky, unbalanced. So many game breaking bugs, so many restarts
I bought the sequel brand new for a fiver or something late last year after recommendations on here but not played it yet

It’s such a shame the sequel flopped based on the reception of the first game, as it’s a million times better.

Loved the first one, it lacked coherence and felt a bit like a „best of Resident Evil“, but it had a few fantastic levels, and the weapons felt great.
The second one was just boring, the open world elements and mundane environments didn‘t work at all for me, I abandoned it after a few hours.

Bloody hell I thought I was the only one that loved the first over the second. What's weird is I was predisposed to love the second one as well. It was meant to be the "good" one and - as I loved the first - I thought that meant it was a no brainer. Yet it was rubbish and one of the few times that I've brute forced my way through a game I've actively hated.

I really enjoyed both of them. Second one is the better made game, but the first had the better moments in it.

Fascinating divide here; it almost makes me want to go back to the first game, which I hated and gave up on. It just felt so clunky, gross and ultimately unenjoyable.
And then there's the second, which I really enjoyed. Others have said it better, but there's something about the semi-open world that works for me. At times there was a SH vibe. I also found the combat options / tactical aspect pretty gratifying.

It's not even as if the open world format is for the entire game, it's actually under half of the game as the rest is just linear like the first game.

That's true. They are the bits that stick with me more for some reason e.g. chapters 3 and 7.

I also found the combat options / tactical aspect pretty gratifying. I had this similar thought not too long ago and tried the first game on PS5. Fucking HATED it, might not have made it 15 minutes in. Partly I think there’s something intensely aggravating about the camera or framing of you view - maybe Mikami thought it added tension but it just adds Instant Angermigraine or something - but there’s also stealth sections that are incredibly fucking awful to play through. Not tense, not fun, not like that dollhouse in Village, just like someone replaced your controller with a cheese grater. Angries up the blood. I remember when it was first out, the only parts of that game I even liked were parts that everyone ELSE who was complaining actually hated. So bizarre that people who otherwise seem like they’d be on the same carriage for every other game in the genre have these wildly different experiences of that desperately fucked game.

Yeah, I didn't make it more than half an hour in, which is either a good or terrible defence of our view of it depending on your perspective. It was one of the first games I got on PS4. I remember being bitterly disappointed.
Anyway, I sold it to my mate who absolutely loved it.

I just loved how difficult and utterly batshit mental the first one is.

I finished it at launch. Trudged through every minute of it, thinking any moment now it will make sense and be the new RE4. It never did. That recent attempt at it was just to check if… maybe something had been patched.
Ironically, there’s a part in EW2 which is a deliberate throwback to the first game and I absolutely hated that section as well.

Does the first one have framerate issues? It always feels like it when I've tried it

I think it ALSO had lots of technical issues, but it’s definitely a game design issue for me.

Ha, I just did that with the second one. It’s on Gamepass, 60fps, too (on the Series X at least).

Turns out I'd bought the DLC for the first but never played it. Hmm. Something has gone tits up with my cloud saves though and I've only got the penultimate chapter saved. I was going to start on NG+ but looks like that's out. I might do the DLC though, see what that's like.
