I certainly think that Sony should have put effort into making their 1P VR titles VR2 compatible. Not a lot you can do to make everyone else do it though, especially when most games come from small teams.

To be honest I'm still not entirely sure of what the perfect VR game looks like anyway. Just that it needs to be something you want to spend 30+ hours with rather than 3.
The only ones I really think are in that space already are cockpit games provided you can overcome the comfort issues. The likes iRacing and Flight Sim on PC are amazing in VR and it all just works in a natural way.

I don't think you'll ever get to a point where a VR game can be played for as long as a non-VR game. 6-8 hour sessions just aren't realistic I don't think. Been using ours a lot recently, but it is for short 2-3 hour multi-player sessions. Pistol Whip remains my favourite but I am tempted by Red Matter 2.

I meant 30hrs more in terms of wanting to keep coming back for sessions again and again because you are totally invested in a narrative or competitive element. In fairness I can see that some people already have / have had that with VR multiplayer shooters.
I do take the point about game studios wanting to see the install base before going big on VR projects but realistically that's not how this industry has ever expanded. You need a Mario or Sonic or Tomb Raider or Golden Eye or Halo to drive uptake of the hardware to get that sizeable install base. Closest so far was Half Life Alyx.
I'm sure we'll get there eventually as VR (well AR at least) will ultimately become useful for other things beyond gaming and normalised.

I can’t think of any game apart from football manager, fifa and Diablo that I’ve ever come close to spending 30 hours on anyway.
There’s no reason I can think of that most FPS games couldn’t put in a reasonably simple modification to allow VR. Even if it was pretty limited.
The Apple VR may help expand investment which will help other platforms, although that’s never going to be mass market at the price. It’s all at least 10 years away from being a tiny niche, but it’ll be decades before it’s more than that.

Feel like the Horizon game is getting a little overlooked in this conversation. It’s a substantial 1st party game based on one of Sony’s biggest IPs. It’s probably not 30 hours but it’s not far off. It’s a proper game and very good.

Fair point, I've not actually played it as Horizon left me a bit cold. Should give it a go really. You definitely should. It’s the flagship PSVR2 game really. Seems strange to have one and not have played it, especially as discussed there’s such a dearth of ‘proper’ games. It also plays very differently to the main games.

I might give it a shot then, maybe when it goes on sale. Had the sense it was somewhere between proper game and tech demo.

The thing that put most people I know off was the £70 price tag. On top of the unit itself, it seems that was a bridge too far vs. picking up some quality lower end titles.

Not played Horizon yet as need to get my VR legs better first, and not been using the PSVR much as Zelda has been dominating my gaming time these last few months. Beat Saber with the kids on weekends has been the main use.
But yesterday I had a VR session in GT with the wheel. It really is staggeringly good and a massive step up from the PSVR1 (which also was a real faff to setup, especially with the shitty passthrough of the added box).
Growing up in the 80s it was the arcade which provided the cutting edge experience, and it was leagues ahead of what you could play at home. Then the 32/64 bit machines changed all that, but we drifted into cycles of incremental fidelity boosts, and a bit of wow factor from the odd launch title. Playing GT in VR yesterday it was like being back at the arcade as a kid and playing Hard Drivin' for the first time. I really was in awe at how amazing an experience it is, how much that added depth perception along with being able to instinctively look through corners adds to what is already a great game. And I even managed 45 mins and only felt a little queasy after!
I accept it was a bit of a luxury purchase, and it could do with more bigger titles, but as others have said it's a bit of a cycle - without games it's hard to shift units, without units out there it's hard to justify big budgets.

As the nights are finally got round to drawing in, I’ve been playing Resi 8 over the last couple of days. The gunplay is fantastic. Just done the bit where you fight the first sister and the flooded wine cellar just after. It’s incredible. Feels so good.
It’s a little janky in places being a flat port - the repositioning of your head in cutscenes etc and some bits don’t quite fit VR (I can imagine some people being frustrated at the opening segment once you get to the village) but it’s really rewarding too. The detail is incredible. Would have liked more interactive objects, but seeing everything replicated in rich 3d with great textures is ace.
Would love to see what Capcom could do with building a game from the ground up for VR.

I've been watching a few vids on the no man's sky update. Sounds like they've implemented foveated eye tracking thingy and by all accounts it's immense.
Any of you kind gents tried it out yet?

Found NMS super pukey mcpukeface but might try again. One of the videos I watched said they could only last 20-30 mins when psvr2 first came out due to blurriness, poor draw distance and frame rate. Now he's playing for hours due to the smoothness, clarity and wow factor. Must admit, I reckon you would need some good vr legs for that type of game.

I’ll give it another go. It was bearable in jerky travel mode but it loses all the wow that way.

It's been 3 days since I posted my nms update which makes me believe:
1. No on owns no man's sky. Boo. It's a great game these days. 2. No one uses their psvr2 anymore. 3. Anyone selling one?

I'm just surprised that with the dearth of games on psvr2 that no one is giving it a shot. A massive open world game with dedicated vr controls and foveated goodness. Like I say, if you are not using it, sell it. 😁

I think it comes back to the sorts of games that people want to play. At the moment, lots (including me) still use it mostly for short sessions, party games etc. More immersive games are emerging and will get traction. But it's a bit Chicken and egg really.

I’ve got it, but I platinumed it at launch, and don’t have much desire to spend a huge amount time in it anymore. I have booted it up a couple of times on VR2 but I’ve got other stuff to play.
Got an email from Sony with VR2 stats today. 21 hours played this month. 2 games. One of those was 10 mins in NMS, the rest of the time was Beat Saber.

That's all fair enough but I just thought as far as experiences go, standing on your freighter looking over planets in the distance with your frigates about in VR would garner some sort of wow factor.
Just wish I could rent a psvr2 for a week or two to try it out.

Sitting in the cockpit of your ship and manually having to take control of flying (hands on sticks), taking off and flying through the atmosphere into space, with the feedback of the headset and the visuals of space is very, very cool.
I just can’t be bothered with all the gathering resources anymore. I may go back to it at some point, there’s a lot added since I played properly.

I’m currently mostly using it for stuff that burns a few calories, like pistol whip. I have used it a few times for things like Armoured Core so I can play in what feels like a huge screen.
I’ve tried NMS before but never got out of the incredibly boring tutorial.

The problem I have is that if I don’t play for a while I lose my VR legs and then it takes me a few days or orientation to get them back again. So on top of the ‘get it all out and set it all up’ barrier I have that as well. I need a big new game to get me back in.

I must admit I love no man's sky for its freedom. I don't play it religiously but go back to it every other update and get hooked on it for another 30 hours or so.
I love how you can just go on your solo little trip but if you feel a bit lonely, you can go into the anomaly and bump into other fellow travellers and join up and do a couple of co-op missions.
It's the sheer scope of it that I would really love to see in VR.
You can always go into creative mode and get everything unlocked, no money ties, if you can't be arsed with the gathering malarkey.
I'm sure I will get a psvr2 at some point and mainly for this game.

Only 6 missions in VR apparently. Shame, looked good fun.
Reviews for Tennis On Court are not good either. All a bit broken, even if the physics do seem quite bang on.
